WHY NOW?

The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) reports that less than one percent of venture capital dollars invested annually has been directed to the countrys 5.8 million minority business owners, who represent 29 percent of all businesses in America. Between 2002 and 2007, the number of minority-owned firms increased 46 percent, compared to 18 percent for all U.S. firms. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 2002 and 2007, the number of people employed at minority-owned businesses jumped 27 percent, while job growth for non-minority-owned firms increased less than one percent. The MBDA asserts that closing the funding gap between minorityand non-minority-owned startups, based on the share of the adult minority population, would add $2.5 trillion to the economic output of the U.S. and create 11.8 million new jobs.

THE 21ST CENTURY YOUTH PROJECT (21ST CYP)

Inspired by the ideas outlined in Malcolm Gladwells book Outliers: the Story of Success, the 21st Century Youth Project was founded on the concept that success is a matter of perfect placement, timing and training. The program offers Middle and Highschool students distinct advantages on 3 separate fronts: 1. Improving your skills Today (through teaching and tutoring) 2. Providing assistance for Tomorrow (through coaching and mentoring) 3. Opportunities for the Future (through internship placement) The 21st Century Youth Project was set up to give those less advantaged students access to a dynamic, business centered approach to learning, thus engaging them in developing their next generation skills. Additionally, student participants will create web and mobile apps (for Google Android, iPhone, iPad, etc.), learn how to formulate a business plan, and even gain college credits. Students will also take part in case studies, which will look great on their resumes and portfolios (because of hands-on tangible skills gained through internship placements). Most young people have a natural enthusiasm for technology, and the 21stCYP seeks to build an educational foundation upon this interest. But this isnt simply about dry academics; the goal is also to show them how they can essentially design their own future. Students are not only gaining foundational skills that are aligned with the STEM curricula, theyre also developing their critical thinking, entrepreneurial skills and bolstering their selfconfidence. Creating a better future (for individuals and society) starting at the grass-roots level - thats what the 21st Century Youth Project is really all about. 21CYP has also been featured on CNN, in magazines and has won a Gold award in educations Best New Product in the Edison Awards by a selection panel that consisted of around 3,000 professionals, academics and specialists.

Entrepreneurship is extremely important and we need to do more to ensure both growth and stability in business and our communities. The Entrepreneur Fellows Program is an initiative in entrepreneurship education that exposes young, potential entrepreneurs to real-life situations that require critical thinking and build leadership potential. The EFP is essentially a 12-20 week entrepreneurship work-study program that aims to teach the theory and practice of entrepreneurship. What makes the program special is how it incorporates mentorship into the equation. What you end up with is a unique and diverse learning experience that is both hands-on and academic in nature. By carefully selecting certain individuals across a wide range of industries, schools, and backgrounds, the EFP seeks to initiate change at the ground level. Likewise, the EFP seeks to expose certain participants to entrepreneurial-style thinking who might not have had access to that experience otherwise. All fellows will learn unique lessons that will be applicable to virtually any career field you can think of. We are looking for natural-born leaders, our goal is to provide them with the tools they need to succeed and perhaps even make the world a better place. CHICAGO FILM INSTITUTE

Chicago Film Institute is dedicated to educating, inspiring and championing the Chicago film and new media community. Through a variety of programs and an intensive, hybrid conservatory, CFI is committed to fostering the citys culturally vital and economically valuable film industry. CFIs programs will fill needs that traditional institutions are missing such as cost-effective instruction, real-world applications and accessible education to individuals from underrepresented communities. Through both the conservatory and additional programs, CFI will provide the Chicago region with an entrepreneurial, innovative and collaborative means for artistic expression and education. CFI is specifically filling a void where traditional universities and less established programs cost to benefit is often adverse and the quality of education is debatably not as valuable as real industry experience. Furthermore, CFI hopes to assist the Chicago film community by providing quality, fluid education to a region that is sorely lacking in numbers of programs. The blended, 10 and 24 week conservatory module option will offer a university comparable education at a fraction of the traditional cost with comparable and superior benefits. Each conservatory module will end with the completion of a high-quality, IMDb qualifying film project that will be steps above the typical student film. Objectives: 1. To lead Fellows in the examination of the foundation and techniques of film and video production. 2. Foster the Chicago film community through education, collaboration and creation. 3. To graduate Fellows fully equipped to meet the highest professional standards of their craft while assisting them in showcasing a quality finished film project.
