Brooke Cohn 800770154 English 1102 Professor Brown Annotated Bibliography "Dealing With Peer Pressure.

" Dealing With Peer Pressure. Ed. D'Arcy Lyness. Nemours, Oct. 2012. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/friend/peer_pressure.html>. This article is geared toward an audience of children around the middle school age, and explains a general idea of peer pressure. It discusses the two different types, positive and negative, so kids will understand the difference. It also goes over why peer pressure exists, and how to walk away from it when the incident happens to be negative. I think this article is very helpful to young students who are starting off their grade school years, to help them understand the difference between giving into pressure for the right or wrong reasons. I think the article is a good one, although could be a little longer and could go a little more in depth.

Eisenstein, Paul A. "Peer Pressure Leading Teens to Text Less While Driving with Others Onboard." TheDetroitBureau.com. The Detroit Bureau, 18 Apr. 2013. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2013/04/peerpressure-leading-teens-to-text-less-while-driving-with-others-onboard/>. This article really stood out to me because its not something you would really expect. According to the article, peer pressure deters teens from texting and driving. The article states that 95 percent of teens will text or e-mail when driving alone, but that number drops a good amount when theyre with friends in the car. When theyre with their friends, that number drops to 32 percent, and a mere 7 percent when theyre driving with their parents. I think this article is extremely interesting, because it really goes to show how much effect people have on others,

especially when it comes to something that could cause something fatal like texting and driving.

Gramuglia, Rachel. "Handling Peer Pressure in College." Outlook.monmouth.edu. Monmouth University: The Outlook, 27 Feb. 2013. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://outlook.monmouth.edu/index.php/opinion/774-handling-peerpressure-in-college>. This article basically states that when kids go to college, they normally find themselves conforming to the new group of friends they find to hang out with. This is a completely normal aspect of peer pressure, as when you go off to school, you have to fit in with a completely new group of people. Drifting away from old friends can be hard, and getting new ones is an extremely important part of college life. Students want to fit in, so they do whatever it takes to get their new circle to like them, whether it be alcohol, or something positive like a fitness schedule. I think this article pinned college right on the dot, because Ive noticed most of the things I read in this article happening at UNC Charlotte.

Hansen, Regan. "College and Peer Pressure." Yahoo! Voices. Yahoo! Contributor Network, 10 Nov. 2011. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://voices.yahoo.com/collegepeer-pressure-10388585.html>. This article goes through the changes you face and the peer pressure you will see in college. It talks about the difference between living with your parents and the pressure you end up having when you move to live with people your age. It discusses the negative aspects of pressure in college, such as the obvious alcohol and drugs, as well as cheating and lack of studying. It also goes over positive peer pressure and how it can convince you to join groups that are beneficial and to have a really great friend group as well.

Harding/Health.com, Anne. "Arguing with Mom Helps Teens Fend Off Peer Pressure." Time.com. Time, 22 Dec. 2011. Web. Apr. 2013.

<http://healthland.time.com/2011/12/22/arguing-with-mom-helps-teensfend-off-peer-pressure/>. Apparently, getting in an argument with your parent isnt completely a bad thing. According to the article, studies show that teens who can hold a valid, sustainable argument with their parents are less likely to give into peer pressure. Children have to learn how to stand up for themselves in moments of peer pressure and being influenced, and the best way to learn that is through a person theyre close to such as a parent. If they know how to hold their own, and have a strong backbone with their parents, theyre more likely to stand up for themselves when being influenced by their peers. I really enjoyed this article and thought it was very interesting.

Hartney, Elizabeth. "What Is Peer Pressure?" About.com. About.com, 5 July 2011. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://addictions.about.com/od/howaddictionhappens/f/Peer_Pressure.ht m>. This article basically just gives a definition of Peer Pressure, that it is the influence peers have on each other, and is most common in younger age groups. It talks about the most common and stereotyped aspects of peer pressure, such as drugs and alcohol. It also covers not only the impact and consequences of the child being influenced, but the parent as well. Parents always worry that their child might go under the influence or do something theyll regret. I didnt think this article was as insightful as the others, because it was very short and didnt really cover too much difference.

"It's My Life . Body . Alcohol . Peer Pressure." Pbskids.org. PBS Kids, 2005. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://pbskids.org/itsmylife/body/alcohol/article7.html>. I thought this article was interesting because instead of focusing on the person being pressured, it really focused on the person at blame. It talked about

why peer pressure happens in the first place, and the reasoning behind it. It gives reasons why the person pressuring another feels like they need to need to participate in that. As well, it also goes over on how to get out of being pressured into something you dont want to do, and how to say no. I thought this article was really insightful and gave me some more perspective.

"Peer Pressure." ThinkQuest. Oracle Education Foundation, n.d. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://library.thinkquest.org/3354/Resource_Center/Virtual_Library/Peer _Pressure/peer.htm>. This article really emphasizes on the ability to say no when being pressured into something. It talks about resisting the pressure of doing what your friends are telling you to do, no matter how great they say it is or how many times repeatedly they ask. It also gives good information and shows the different types of friends, the ones that you will want to become close with, and the ones who are faking. I really liked this article mainly because of the friendship part, its something none of the articles covered.

Roberts, Lindsay. "Peer Pressure: How College Life Can Change You." Quchronicle.com. The Quinnipiac Chronicle, 15 Apr. 2009. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://www.quchronicle.com/2009/04/peer-pressure-how-college-lifecan-change-you/>. This article tells the story of a girl who is coming near to the end of her freshman year in college. She had made the decision not to drink, but explains the amount of peer pressure you receive when you come to college on being offered drinks, and be expected to drink them. She even said that she held an empty red solo cup at some points, just to avoid the constant questioning of getting asked for a drink. This just goes to show that peer pressure doesnt end once youre out of those high school doors, it continues on. I thought this article was great, because I had some relation to the author. I have no desire to drink, and although I still havent had any alcohol, I find the pressure and the drinking to be social aspect of college to be extremely annoying. I dont feel like you need to have alcohol to have a good time.

"Teens and Peer Pressure." WebMD.com. Ed. Roy Benaroch. Web MD, 3 Feb. 2012. Web. Apr. 2013. <http://teens.webmd.com/peer-pressure>. This article deals with more peer pressure problems seen in older teens, such as high school or college age. It goes through the consequences of giving in to negative peer pressure, such as drugs or alcohol. It states a few examples of situations that are normal for teens to face during their years in school, and how to get around or avoid them. I think this article was good and very thorough, because it really outlined the importance of not giving into the negative effects, and gave specific examples as well. I think it really would be a good article to give to teens at that age, as it would really let them know how to deal with pressure at their age.
