SUCCESSES TO DATE

Ottawa’s only renewable energy co-op, and one of the first in Ontario, OREC has grown to over 160 members since it first incorporated in September 2010, and we raised nearly $1 million in less than three months with our first shareholder offering in the summer of 2012. We currently have 5 solar projects on the roof- tops of non-profit or co-op housing buildings, and co-own a 250kW project on the roof of a storage facility in the city’s west end.

I have seen firsthand the hard work, boundless energy, and sincere passion that the staff and volunteers invest in achiev- ing OREC’s important mission. This is a sound investment—for your portfolio, for our community, and for the planet.

WHY SHOULD YOU BECOME A MEMBER?

• To build a greener and more sustainable Ottawa for future generations by establishing a more efficient and reliable energy system that reduces our reliance on non-renewable energy sources. • To establish a more efficient and reliable energy system and reduce our reliance on non-renew- able energy sources;

• To support our local economy by investing in local community-owned renewable energy projects;

• To become an owner and have a say—all members in the Co-op are co-owners of our projects, and we make decisions together.

WHAT IS THE FEED-IN TARIFF (FIT) PROGRAM?

•Introduced through the Green Energy Act, 2009 to promote renewable energy;

•Ontario Power Authority pays renew- able energy producers a guaranteed price per kilowatt hour (kWh);

•Contracts are for a 20 years at a stable rate of reimbursement;

•Very successful to date—targets for renewable energy have been met 4 years ahead of schedule!

•>50,000 homeowners and 1 in 7 farm- ers applied for solar contracts.

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

OREC enters into 20-year lease agreements with property owners in Ottawa to use their land or roof- tops for the installation of renewable energy systems owned by the co-operative’s members. OREC’s solar projects are situated atop large commercial, institu- tional or non-profit or buildings due to the long-term nature of these contracts. Once the installations are in place, the renewable energy produced generates revenue through Ontar- io’s Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program, which allows OREC to return to members the full amount of their invest- ments plus a healthy dividend over a 20-year period.

WHY OREC?

•We produce renewable electricity in Ottawa;

•We increase public awareness of sustainable energy technologies;

•We provide Ottawans with a socially and envi- ronmentally responsible investment option;

•We stimulate Ottawa’s local renewable energy industry;

•We set an example as a co-operative and sustainable social finance model.
