Culture of North America

Author: Alicia Heck Revision Date of Lesson Plan (if applicable): April 16, 2013 Overall Goal for the Lesson: The student will be able to understand different aspects of the cultures of this continent including language, ethnic heritage, social systems, religion, and traditions. Also they will understand the concept of cultural diffusion and how it impacts societies. Description of classroom, grade level, and students: The class will consist of 25-30 6th graders who are at grade level. Typical classroom with smart board, desks, and maps.

Student Objectives for the lesson. (Given a condition, the students will, to what level). Given the information about the different cultures of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the student will be able to correctly answer the question on a worksheet with 80% accuracy.

Length of Lesson: (minutes, number of class periods, or days or weeks needed). 1 45-minute class period. Breakdown: 5 minutes- Quick review of the iMovie from the previous day. 10 -15 minutes- Podcast discussing the cultures of North America 15 minutes- Worksheet over what was discussed in the podcast 10-15 minutes- Review of the different cultures of North America, students discuss what they learned, what surprised them, and what they though were interesting.

Schedule of Activities: (Break down your activity into a timeline of events. Focus on what students will be doing and what teachers will be doing during each part of the activity.) 5 minutes- Quick review of the iMovie from the previous day. The teacher will be leading the discussing and asking the students what they remembered. 10 -15 minutes- Podcast discussing the cultures of North America. The students will be listening to the podcast, looking at their maps, and following along on the worksheets. The students can also be looking at pictures of the different cultures on the projector, if the teacher chooses to use them. The teacher will be making sure the students pay attention. They also can be pointing out the locations of the countries on the maps. If the teacher has pictures of the different cultures they can be shown on the projector as the podcast is continuing. 15 minutes- Worksheet over what was discussed in the podcast. The students will be answering the questions on the worksheet. The teacher will be walking around the classroom answering questions. 10-15 minutes- Review of the different cultures of North America, students discuss what they learned, what surprised them, and what they though were interesting. The teacher will be asking the students question about the podcasts. The students will be answering questions and can also be asking the teacher questions over the podcast. Assessments: How will these activities be assessed? (Go back to your objectives, what will the students do? Make sure that each objective is paired to an assessment measure that allows students to show it). For the discussions and listening to the podcast the students will receive participation points with 10 points being the most points possible. If the student does not participate or pay attention to the podcast their points will be reduced. The worksheet will be graded based on the questions that are answered correctly and incorrectly.

Accommodations: How might the lesson need to be adapted for students with special needs? Students with special needs will be able to have their lessons adopted. For the podcast the student will be able to have a written outline and script of podcast to follow along with. Also for the worksheet, the students can answer it orally, write a shorter paragraph, or have less answer choices on the multiple-choice question. Also if the student needs to they can write notes during the podcast to help them remember the parts of the lesson App to be used for lesson (if applicable): None. Materials Needed: Go through each activity and identify what items (both technology and not) are needed to complete this lesson. Include a breakdown according to individual student or student groups.
