MEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, KHAIRPUR MIRS CAMPUS. FIRST TERM FINAL YEAR (7TH TERM) B.E.(MECHANICAL) REGULAR EXAMINATION OF 2013 OF 10 BATCH MACHINE DESIGN AND CAD-II Dated: - Time Allowed: 03 Hours. Max. Marks 80 NOTE: ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. ASSUME ANY MISSING DATA. Q.No. 01. Marks How the shaft is designed when it is subjected to bending moment only? [16] Design a shaft to transmit power from an electric motor to a lathe headstock through a pulley by means of a belt drive. The pulley weighs 200N and is located at 300 mm from the center of the bearing. The diameter of the pulley is 200 mm and the maximum power transmitted is 1.5 Kw at 150 r.p.m. The angle of lap of the belt is 180 and coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3.The shock and fatigue factors for bending and twisting are 1.5 and 2.0 respectively. The allowable shear stress in the shaft may be taken as 35 Mpa. [06]

02. (a) What do you understand by torsional rigidity and lateral rigidity?

(b) Compare the weight, strength and stiffness of a hollow shaft of the same diameter external diameter as that of solid shaft. The inside diameter of the hollow shaft being half the external diameter. Both the shafts have the same material and length. [10] 03. (a) The use of a coupling becomes an essential due to of many reasons. State those reasons and the requirements of shaft coupling. [06] (b) Design a flange coupling to connect the shafts of a motor pump set. The power is to be transmitted is 20kw at 1440 rpm. Determine the diameter of shafts for the motor and pump. The allowable shear stress in the shaft is 50 MPa and the angle of twist is not exceed 1 deg. in a length of 20 diameter. The allowable shear stress in the coupling bolts is 20 MPa. The maximum torque is 20% more than the mean torque. [10] Take G=84 GPa and allowable crushing stress for key=100 MPa. 04. A band brake acts on the th of the circumference of a drum of 45 cm diameter, which is keyed, to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 2250 kg-cm. One end of the band is attached to a fulcrum pin of the lever and the other end to a pin10 cm from the fulcrum. If the operating force is applied at 50 cm from the fulcrum and the coefficient of friction is 0.25,find the operating force when the drum rotates in the anticlockwise direction. If the brake lever and pins are to be made of mild steel having permissible stresses for tension and crushing as 700 kg/cm2 and for shear 560 kg/cm2, design the shaft, key, pins and lever. The bearing pressure between the pins and the lever may be taken as 80 kg/cm2. [16]

(-2-) 05. (a) Define the following terms: (i) Bearing characteristic number and bearing modulus, (ii) Coefficient of friction for journal bearing; (iii) Critical pressure of the journal bearing. [06]

(b) Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following data; [09] Load on the journal = 20,000 N; Speed of the journal = 900 r.p.m ; Type of oil is SAE 10, for which the absolute viscosity at 55C = 0.017 kg/m-sec; Ambient temperature of oil = 15.5C; Maximum bearing pressure for the pump = 1.5 N/mm2. Calculate also mass of the lubricating oil required for artificial cooling, if the rise of temperature of the oil be limited to 10C. Heat dissipation coefficient=1232 W/m2/C. 06. Mention the two ways and materials used in order to design a belt. A leather belt transmits 16hp from a pulley 90cm diameter running at 450 rpm. The density of the belt material is 0.004 kg/cm3. The angle of lap is 165o and =0.27. The belt is 0.4cm thick. Calculate the width of the belt? [16] [04]

07 (a) Explain how the following factors influence the life of a bearing: (i) Load (ii) Speed (iii) Temperature (v) Reliability

(b) Select a single row deep groove ball bearing with the operating cycle listed below, which will have a life of 15000 hours. [12] Fraction of cycle 1/10 1/10 1/5 3/5 Type of load Heavy shocks Light shocks Moderate shocks No shock Radial Thrust (N) (N) 2000 1200 1500 1000 1000 1500 1200 2000 Speed (R.P.M) 400 500 600 800 Service facto 3.0 1.5 2.0 1.0
