Known Issues for Release 4.0.3

Inconsistency CLI/CI/WEB for Query Time and Robust Value IGMP settings (Q01028942). The CLI does not provide the correct range of values for the Query Time and Robust Value IGMP settings. The CLI allows a limited range of 1-512 for the Query Time and 0-64 for the Robust Value. However, the correct range is 1-65535 for the Query Time and 0-255 for the Robust Value. Both Ethernet Routing Switch 3510 and Cisco* catalyst 6500 become root on non def STG - tagged. (Q01052697). The Cisco unit uses non-standard PVST for VLANs. When Ethernet Routing Switch 3510 is connected to Cisco catalyst 6500, both switches become root bridge when the tagged ports are added to non default VLAN and STG. This problem is seen both on regular and MLT links. Static route becomes inactive after adding a static ARP with the next hop. This can be avoided by clearing the dynamic ARP table before assigning a static entry for a device. (Q01035975) Commands that are generated with an exclamation point (!) are intended as reminders that this line of the configuration file requires user intervention. For example, commands that contain passwords in the secure image are generated with the passwords hidden to maintain the security of your device. The password must be changed before uploading the command back into the device. The configuration file generated by the ACG feature may generate the following command without a pre-pended exclamation point (!): snmp-server host 10.10.10.10 "********" You should edit the community string before uploading this command to a device. (Q00886260) A port's STP cost will not be retrieved as part of an ACG file or display. (Q00803107) When using MAC Security on an MLT link, the ACG generated text file may associate MAC addresses with the wrong port of the MLT group. (Q00825593)

217331-A

15

If you embed a double quote (") symbol in any text string parameter - such as sysLocation and sysDescr - the ACG feature will generate a script file that will cause errors if reinserted into the system. It is best to avoid embedding the double quote (") character into any string-based configuration parameters. (Q00869524) The ACG generated file will not display the MAC addresses that have been learned by the system if you set place the ports of an MLT link into a security list, and then enable MAC-security learning on those ports. The workaround is to first learn the MAC addresses and then place the ports into a security list. (Q00894848)

ASCII Configuration Generator

When configuring a device with a file that was created by the ASCII Configuration Generator (ACG), the device must first be set to default before downloading the file. (Q00886268)

Bay Secure
You cannot delete Security Lists created on MLT ports using the CLI. Use the Menu Interface as an alternative. (Q00890138) You may not add a multicast address to a MAC Destination Address filter. (Q00880061) Enabling MAC Security and EAPoL simultaneously is not supported. (Q00824678) When MAC Address Security is enabled, BPDU packets will be filtered unless they are entered into the security address table. This is true for all source addresses that are not entered into the security address table. (Q00799878)

Cabling
The Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T supports the IEEE 802.3-2002 cabling standard for 1000Base-T networks. The standard states the following:

Release Notes for Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T, Software Release 4.0.3.

16

1000BASE-T signaling requires four pairs of Category 5 balanced cabling, as specified in ISO/IEC 11801:1995 and ANSI/EIA/TIA-568-A (1995) and tested for the additional performance parameters specified in 40.7 using testing procedures defined in proposed ANSI/TIA/EIA TSB95.

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Up to 10 server entries are supported by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) feature. When DHCP Relay is enabled, the use of Precedence 11 is not supported when configuring QoS policies. Use another precedence value. (Q00889041)

GBIC
When observing the GBIC port through Device Manager, the GBIC port may appear as a 1000BaseT port. If this should occur, refresh the display or invoke the Device > Rediscover Device menu command. (Q00888504).

General
The configure command has three options - network, terminal, and memory. The memory option is not supported at this time. (Q00843558) If you try to configure the device with an IP address that already exists on the network through the Menu Interface, you will receive a "Duplicate IP Address" error message, but the error message may not be formatted correctly. (Q00795955) When entering the following command, there is no help description available for the "cli" or "menu" options. (config)# cmd-interface ? (Q00880983) When entering the following command, there is no help description available for the listed command parameters. (config)# telnet-access logging ? (Q00881002)

217331-A

17

You will receive a "General Failure" message if the TFTP server address is not configured and you attempt to download an ASCII configuration file to the system. (Q00897485)

IP Routing
The IP packet Time-To-Live value for routed packets is set to 64. This static value cannot be modified. (Q00845032) The IP routing feature does not support jumbo frames (frames larger than 1522 bytes). The following commands are designed to display the same information. show arp show ip arp (Q00843511) Once IP routing is enabled, you may not change the default gateway using the Menu Interface. (Q00884210,Q00837488) Static routing only supports directly connected routes. Any static routing entries that are not directly connected will remain inactive. (Q00877964) The "show arp" command cannot be filtered using the -s option. (Q00876848) The switch will not send network unreachable ICMP messages when the network is unreachable. (Q00864920) If you want to change the management VLAN and you have IP routing enabled, do the following steps: a b c d Note the IP addresses of both the current and the target VLAN Interfaces. Delete the IP address of both the current and target VLAN interfaces. Reassign the management VLAN to the target VLAN interface. Reassign the IP addresses to both the current and former VLAN interfaces. (Q00835453)

Release Notes for Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T, Software Release 4.0.3.

18

Multicast
When the "vlan igmp unknown-mcast-no-flood" command is enabled, all unknown multicast traffic will be filtered from the VLAN. This may affect protocols such as RIP-2, OSPF, and VRRP.

MultiLink Trunking
When using the web interface, you may receive the following message when attempting to disable a port that is a member of an active MLT: "Port is member of an active trunk group." (Q00876320) If you are using the MAC Security feature on an MLT link with port portioning on intruder detection and an intruder is detected, the port will partition as expected. Ports may be shown as enabled after a reboot, but will still be partitioned from the rest of the system. This is a display issue only. To resolve the display issue, disable the MLT group and re-enable the port. (Q00866230) You should avoid configuring a single port in an inactive DMLT connection. The interface does not guard against every configuration change when the MLT connection is inactive. (Q00861131)

Password Security
he secure image will hide passwords as they are entered or configured. This feature is not implemented on the standard image. (Q00891313) When enabling the Password Security feature, you will see the following error message if the current password is incompatible with the password policies enforced by the Password Security Feature. Invalid RO password format Invalid RW password format Invalid RO password format Invalid RW password format (Q00880751) RO Password changed to Default "userpass" RW Password changed to Default"securepass" RO Password changed to Default "userpass" RW Password changed to Default"securepass"

When using the Password Security feature, the allowed password length is between 8 and 15 characters. (Q00839679)

217331-A

19

Passwords
The user may set the same password for RO and RW users. If the same password is set for both users, the Menu Interface will provide RW access when the password is entered. (Q00880895) The system will display the default password values via the menu interface if the Local Password setting is configured as "None." If the local password value is changed to enable passwords, or if the password is changed from the default value, the password is displayed as "*". (Q00867065) Connecting this device to a Cisco 4500 in 10Mbps / half-duplex mode is not supported. (Q00831574)

Port Configuration
Both ends of an Ethernet link must be configured identically when connecting the Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T device to another networking device. This means that both sides should have the same autonegotiation, duplex, and speed settings. (Q00887194, Q00806345) If you configure the flow control on a port, the Menu Interface may show the flow control as being disabled. The CLI and Web interface display the correct settings. (Q00857330) The Flow Control parameter is not applicable to 10/100 Ethernet ports. When viewing the flow control parameter on the Menu Interface, the parameter may be displayed as "disabled." When viewing the flow control parameter on the Web Interface, the parameter may be displayed as "N/A." (Q00805088) Changing the flow control characteristics of a port to "asymmetric" or "symmetrical" using the CLI "flowcontrol" command will also cause autonegotiation to be disabled. (Q00819892)

Port Mirroring
If port mirroring is enabled, and a received packet is tagged with the VLAN ID of a VLAN that does not exist on the switch, (for example, the packet's VLAN ID field contains a value of 2, but VLAN 2 does not exist on the system) then that packet will not be forwarded to the monitor port. (Q00877351) QoS remarking will apply to packets before they are mirrored to the monitor port. Therefore, the egress packet on the monitor port may not be identical to the ingress packet. (Q00877373)

20

When the Port Mirroring and IP Routing feature are enabled simultaneously, packets that are ingress mirrored will reflect the MAC address of the router. (Q00857136, Q00859155, Q00859156) If port-mirroring is enabled, and you attempt to tag all ports via the CLI, you may see the following error message: % Cannot modify settings % Port mirroring enabled on port(s) As a result of the command, all ports with lower unit/port number pairs than the monitor port will be tagged. All other ports will not be tagged. If you wish to tag all ports in this scenario, use the Menu Interface, Web Interface, or two CLI commands to target the ports before and after the monitored port. (Q00867254)

QoS
IPv6 classifiers only support IPv6 addresses in the source or the destination. Specifying IPv6 addresses in both the source and destination at the same time is not supported. (Q00858363) When using QoS on a Trusted interface, only IPv4 packets containing standardized (IETF or Nortel proprietary) or "well-known" DSCP values are remarked by default. Packets containing non-standard DSCP values at ingress are not remarked by default. These packets can be explicitly remarked as directed by the user. (Q00846246)

RADIUS
The RADIUS Fallback feature cannot be disabled using the CLI. You may use the Menu Interface as an alternative. (Q00892756) When using RADIUS Password Fallback, the system will not revert to using the local password until the Inactivity Timeout has expired. (Q00881096) When entering the RADIUS shared secret using the Menu Interface, you will see the shared secret in clear text. Subsequent displays of the shared secret will be hidden. (Q00900217)

SNMP

217331-A

The MIB objects rcTblIpAddrSize and rcTblIpNetToMediaSize are not supported in this release. (Q00884681)

21

The ifAlias object returns the interfaces names and the VLAN names. (Q00889039) If you attempt to set the rcStgPortPathCost MIB variable to 0, no error will be returned. (Q00898360) The various user interfaces allow differing lengths for the following SNMP variables: sysDesc, sysLocation, and sysContact CLI allows 126 characters Menu Interface allows 56 characters Device manager allows 256 characters through the Edit > Chassis menu ACG will only generate strings of 63 characters in length. (Q00900876)

Spanning Tree Protocol

f the Menu Interface's Spanning Tree Port (STP) configuration screen is accessed simultaneously from the serial port and through telnet, the user may lose access to that screen until the system is rebooted. You may use the CLI as an alternative. (Q00893576) The STP configuration of a monitor port cannot be changed. If you attempt to make a change to the STP configuration of a group of ports with the Web Interface, and a monitor port is among the group of ports, then the system will change the configuration for all ports up to the monitor port. The monitor port and subsequent ports will not have their STP configuration changed. (Q00814812) If you take a port from a VLAN that has spanning tree disabled and place that port into another VLAN, the STP configuration of the port will be disabled. (Q00872974) When entering the following command, the help for the "port" parameter is incorrect. It should say "Port that will be the target of the command." (config-if)#default spanning-tree ? (Q00880973) If a port is a member of multiple Layer 3 VLANs, those VLANs should all be part of the same spanning tree group. (Q00863831)

Statistics
Oversized broadcast packets are only counted as oversized. (Q00874361)

Syslog
The Syslog feature allows one user at a time to display the system log via the Menu Interface. This restriction does not exist when using the CLI. (Q00794620) Access to the Syslog is not available to the RO user through the Menu Interface. It is available through CLI. (Q00814028) When a user logs out from a tenet connection, an entry similar to the following message may appear in the system log: Connection logout, IP address: 10.10.10.1, access mode: no security This message means that since the user has logged out of the session, that connection no longer exists, so the security is neither RW nor RO. Therefore, the text "access mode: no security" really means "access mode: no access." (Q00843567)

Telnet
The "default telnet-access" command does not enable telnet access. You may enable telnet access by using the "telnet-access enable" command. (Q00895956)

VLAN
The AppleTalk protocol is not supported as a protocol-based VLAN. You may still use AppleTalk in port-based VLANs. (Q00879811) The SNA protocol is not supported as a protocol-based VLAN. You may still use the SNA protocol in port-based VLANs. (Q00897197) When entering the following command, there is no help description available for the "vlan" option. (config)# interface ? (Q00880972) When changing the Management VLAN with the Menu Interface, you may not see the changes reflected on the screen. Exit the configuration screen after making the configuration changes and re-access the screen to see the configuration changes. (Q00850447) Help is incomplete when you type the following command: ES3510-24T(config)#show vlan type ? (Q00880975)

24

Additional 4.0.3 Issues

Do not enter the MAC address of an adjacent Router in the Destination Address (DA) filtering table. This may cause the unit to not respond to PING commands. (Q00831807) If you use SNMP or Device Manager to configure static routes, the static route entries will not be saved after a reboot. Use the CLI as an alternative interface. (Q00903734)

Known Limitations
The following limitations exist in the Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T: The Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T does not support the following devices: Nortel Networks BayStack 204 Hub 3Com Linkbuilder FMS 100 Hub 3Com SuperStack II Hub 100TX Netgear FE 104 The Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T does not support autonegotiation on the fiber ports with the Foundry TurboIron/8 Fiber Gigabit Ethernet switch. Disable autonegotiation on both sides of the link and ensure matching speed and duplex settings on each side. (Q00744711) The Ethernet Routing Switch 3510-24T supports asymmetric flow control. This means the switch processes pause frame packets but does not generate these packets.
