Corporate Social Responsibilities of Beximco Group

Beximco Group is involved in the business not only to earn foreign currencies, and strengthening countrys economy through manufacturing and exporting its world class products of textile, apparels, ceramic wares, pharmaceuticals and jutes. The group is equally concerned and actively involved in various social welfare activities like health care, mass literacy and poverty alleviation program, creating opportunities for self employment, grooming countrys future potential talents, etc. To coordinate and mobilize all possible resources to carry out the above mentioned welfare activities the honorable group Chairman Mr. A.S.F Rahman and Vice Chairman Mr. Salman F Rahman established a social welfare foundation namely Fazlur Rahman Foundation (FRF). The name of the foundation was ornamented in the name of late Mr. Fazlur Rahman, who is father of the honorable Chairman and Vice Chairman of Beximco Group. Late Mr.Fazlur Rahman was the honorable speaker of the National Assembly of undivided Pakistan, an ex-minister of Bangladesh Government, renowned business entrepreneur of the country and honorable founder Chairman of Beximco Group.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Beximco Group: Corporate Social Responsibility is an integral part of the business strategy which is reflected in the mission statement of Beximco Group. Every employee of Beximco Group knows that the company does not view its success and achievements in financial terms only, but also in terms of its deep relationship with the society. The following are the major areas the group is actively involved and consistently providing support as a part of its corporate social responsibilities (CSR):

1) Donation in Clean Water Management: On behalf of Fazlur Rahman Foundation the Group has initiated and installed 200 numbers of Arsenic free tube wells to the poor inhabitants of Dahor entirely free cost. The foundation has also its plan to extent the similar program at other locations too.

1) Donations in calamities: Beximco Group donated their medicines worth millions of taka to victims in national and international calamities. They donated medicines to victims of earthquake in Pakistan and victims of tsunami in Sri Lanka are worth mentioning.

2) Donation in constructing DAM: The group has constructed a Dam at Joypara of Dahor at a cost of millions of taka for the people of the dam side areas to protect them from the damage caused by the flood almost in every year.

3) Donation in hospitals to providing free medical treatment: To ensure the availability of medical facilities like physicians consultancy, various medical check-ups, medicines at free of cost at a very nominal price to the unaffordable community of the society. The Fazlur Rahman Foundation of the group has established its one Health Care Center at Dhaka City and many others at Dohar, the native place of the honorable Chairman and Vice Chairman of the group. Apart from this, these group employees are also entitled to get free treatment from the Fazlur Rahman Foundation.

4) Donation in use of birth control products: With a view to solving the population problem and to conduct camps for voluntary sterilization in the country Beximco Group donate in use of birth control products. They distribute freely some birth control products to the people each year.

5) Donation in AIDS awareness: Beximco took part in many exhibitions in an attempt to create mass awareness against AIDS and inform people of the availability of anti-AIDS drugs in Bangladesh. Beximco Pharma pastes maximum 150,000 AIDS-awareness posters in the country. They also arrange rally with wearing AIDS-awareness Sports T-Shirt each year. Areas of paste AIDS-awareness posters of Beximco Group Areas Posters (Quantity) Dhaka City 50,000 Outside Dhaka City 100,000 Beximco Pharma also donates in many awareness-building programs of local NGOs, including the awareness-building endeavors of NGO workers who drove around the capital singing antiAIDS songs.

6) Donation to Schools, Madrasas and Mosques: To meet up various expenses of maintenance, developments, expansions and other daytoday expenditure, the Fazlur Rahman Foundation on regular basis donates substantial cash to the authorities of various school, madrasas a and mosques located at Dohar and Krishoregonj.

7) Donation to Education: To facilitate the school with computer education, the Fazlur Rahman Foundation has donated numbers of computers to various school authorities who could not afford to purchase. The foundation also donated Academic books to the poor student. Beximco also donates in incurred through educational institutions recognized by Government for providing technical and vocational education for meritorious poor students.

8) Poverty alleviation: The foundation has a deep sense of responsibilities to eradicate the curse of poverty from the society through up-holding self employment scheme and has successfully contributed to help a remarkable number of poor and unemployed people of Dohar and Dhaka through providing them 200 rickshaws worth take 1 million free of cost.

9) Relief works rehabitation supports during Natural Disasters: One demand of the nature of calamities and disasters, the group always comes forward, extends its hand and stands beside the victims of the calamities throughout the affected areas of the country by providing foods, cash, clothes, tents, etc. The noble initiatives of the group are not limited within the country. This group has donated a huge quantity of medicine, clothes, etc to the earth quake victims of Pakistan in the recent past.

10) Entertaining Industrial Attachments for Learners: the group is always generous and supportive to allow its modern stare of the art resourses for the enrichments of students knowledge in their respective fields. Every year the group has entertained the request of various institutions to accommodate their students from engineering & technology, textile, fashion design, master of business school and defense school of education.

11) Accommodating Internship program: Beximco being the world class industrial setup enriched with most talented and resourcefully workforce and professionals, every year the group faces tremendous pressure to entertain the requests of students internship program from the most top ranking universities of the country.

12) Patronizing the sports and cultural activities: Like many other philanthropically activities the group is also spontaneous to extend its activities support and encouragement towards lifting of the countries sport and culture. The group is always willful to support and sponsor the sports and sports talents in the country and it has successfully sponsored the grand event of south asian federation(SAF)games held in Dhaka and the first division cricket league of the country. The honorable vice chairman of the group: Mr.Salman F Rahman is at present the president of the countrys most popular sports club Abahani.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is that CSR is no longer exclusively a developed country phenomenon. Managers operating in developing countries are also showing interest and commitment to CSR. Despite being one of the Worlds poorest countries, CSR actions in Bangladesh have risen significantly in importance as noted from the findings of our study. It is believed that the interest in CSR initiatives in Bangladesh has been fuelled largely by MNCs. As countries like Bangladesh are increasingly exposed to global standards, it is anticipated that the growth of CSR will continue. From a marketing standpoint CSR is also becoming attractive to Bangladeshi companies for strategic reasons. Firms use their CSR records to create the image of socially responsible firms and thereby influence consumer buying decisions in favor of the goods and services marketed by them.
