THE WORKINGS OF THE SPIRIT Anyone who has seen a loved one off to a new adventure knows how difficult it is to rejoice, even when we are reasonably optimistic about their future. So, we can imagine how difficult it must have been for the disciples to rejoice in Jesus announced departure. Todays Gospel is part of Jesus Last Supper discourse, recorded only by John. Jesus announces shocking news. He must go to the Father, and they should rejoice in this. To help them through this, Jesus gives his disciples his give of peace and promises an Advocate. From our privileged position in history, we can see that all that Jesus promises comes to pass. The Church has grown and still exists on this earth because of the abiding Spirit. But living by the Spirit and entering into the peace of Christ is no small task. Jesus doesnt promise the apostles a rose garden. He is realistic about the costs of discipleship. And, mercifully, he is also clear about its rewards. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

The call of the Holy Spirit to consider a vocation may sometimes be a gentle voice stirring the soul or a personal longing in our hearts. It may be the urging of friends or spouses. It can also find birth in the invitation of pastors, deacons and parish leaders to pursue such an inquiry. No matter the source of our questions each of us needs to be affirmed and encouraged to bring a call to a vocation to prayerful discernment. The Institute for Diaconal Studies (IDS) invites all men who feel the gentle nudge of the Holy Spirit to attend an Exploring the Diaconate session. It is a time to pray, discuss and learn more about the discernment process and the formation program that aspirants and candidates pursue. Please join us as we explore the potential of a vocation, engage in dialogue and pray in search of the next step. All are welcome!
