3 - Law Of Cosine And Sine - Lesson Plan

Task What is the main activity that students will be working on in this lesson?
Students will take notes over the Law of Cosine Notes will be guided by the teacher either over the ELMO or on the PowerPoint via the projector Students will complete notes with teacher and be instructed to complete the check it out examples on the notes on their own after an example has been explained to them o Check it out examples will then be gone over as a class Students will use calculators if needed to assist them with the algebra

Instructional Support What tools or resources will students have to use in their work that will give them entry to, and help them reason through, the activity?
Students will be actively taking notes, keeping up with the teacher Students will be allowed to ask questions and given time to check that their solutions are correct for the check it out examples Students may have their books out to guide them through the notes

Learning Goals (Residue) What understandings will students take away from this activity?
G1.3.1B Define the sine, cosine, and tangent of acute angles in a right triangle as ratios of sides. Solve problems about angles, side lengths, or areas using trigonometric ratios in right triangles. G1.3.2 Know and use the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines and use them to solve problems. Find the area of a triangle with sides a and b and included angle using the formula Area = (1/2) a b sin .

What questions might you ask students that will support their exploration of the activity and bridge between what they did and what you want them to learn (the two green boxes)?
To be clear on what students actually did, begin by asking a set of assessing questions such as: What did you do? How did you get that? What does this mean? Once you have a clearer sense of what the student understands, move on to appropriate set of questions below. What is an included angle? Do the triangles have to be right? Why dont they have to be right? Cant we use the Pythagorean Theorem? Where is the tenths spot when rounding? How do we know how to label the triangles? How do we memorize these formulas? Why are the letters different on the triangles in the example than the formulas we are using? What is an inverse trig function?

What are the various ways that students might complete the activity?
Students will complete the guided notes as the teacher goes over them Students will complete the check it out examples on their own to check their understanding of the concept just covered Students will ask questions when a concept is not clear Students will be encouraged to try the check it out examples even if they do not completely understand the concept

Evidence What will students say, do, produce, etc. that will provide evidence of their understandings?
Students will be able to complete the check it out examples on their own Students will be able to complete their homework assignment Students will be able to apply the law of cosines to triangles with two given sides and the included angel given or all three sides given

Teacher should be walking around during check it out examples to encourage students and answer questions
