Student-Friendly Standards G6.3.6 I can put together a map of the United States using cut out pieces.

E. Procedure: 1. Ask students to raise their hand if they have a friend or relative living in another state. Briefly review the 4 regions (West, Midwest, South and East) using the Elmo and map of the United States. 2. Define border as the line that separates one country or state from another. Ask students which states share a border with Nevada. Repeat with at least 1 other state not near Nevada. 3. students will work together to place the pieces correctly as they would be seen on a map. 4. Explain students to NOT glue down their work until the teacher has a chance to assess if its correct. Teacher will walk around to each group to ensure students are placing the states in the correct place. 5. Before gluing down the states. Students will label each state correctly. 6. Explain and show students how each region comes together to form the United States. 7. Students will work on the Map Study Worksheet independently. 8. CLOSURE: Ticket out the door: Write the name of a state that does not share a border with another state. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The United States puzzle and Map Study worksheet will serve as the assessment. I will be able assess how well students are understanding placement of the states and names. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. 1. Based on the United States puzzle, I will be able to verify if students understand regions based on their discussions with their classmates. If students are talking about the states in their region and are actively discussing the correct region I will know they understand. The Map Study worksheet will give me another chance to see how well students know the material because they are working independently. If the answers are correct, or close to correct Ill know the students have an understanding of the material. If the answers are completely off I know I need to reteach. 1.

The following states would be larger than what is pictured below. Each state would be large enough to fit on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. The states are meant to be cut out by the students and assembled on a sheet of butcher paper like a puzzle. The East
