university. Oxford Castle Unlocked reveals Oxford’s less well known history, one that is
rich with tales of great escapes, betrayal and even romance – all within the walls of
this ancient castle and prison. The site has been used as a place of incarceration
since 1071, continuing until the closure of HM Prison in 1996. The old buildings have
been preserved and are now open to the public revealing a time capsule – allowing

incredibly preserved Baths you’ll get a great insight into the Roman way of life.

En route to Arundel, you’ll stop at the extraordinary Stonehenge. Whilst it’s original
purpose is still a mystery, the monument erected here over 5,000 years ago is
testament to some amazing feats of human engineering achievement. Whether the
site was an observatory (the sun strikes the very centre of the stones at the summer
and winter solstices) or a temple is, in some ways, unimportant - you will be simply
amazed by the scale and beauty of the circle of stones.

4:00pm On your drive to Arundel you will visit Salisbury Cathedral. For over 750 years pilgrims
have travelled to Salisbury to seek inspiration in the glory and peace of the building
and surrounding Cathedral Close. You’ll marvel at and maybe climb up to Britain's
tallest spire. You’ll be awed by the beauty and scale of the cathedral interior. Be
sure to study the original Magna Carta in the Chapter House.

This morning after breakfast, you will depart for your drive to Istanbul

On arrival at Istanbul you will visit the Egyptian Bazaar. Also known as the Spice
Market, this is Istanbul’s second bazaar, constructed in the same complex as Yeni
Camii (or New Mosque). There are six gates, which makes it an attractive exterior. The
L-shaped market, together with the mosque, were built for the mother of Mehmet IV,
a powerful woman who ruled the harem and, some would say, much of the empire.
Although no longer the prime spice trading area of the city, there is still the aroma of
ginger, cardamom, pepper and saffron from the piles of spices sold from many stalls.

These days it is also popular for great varieties of lokum (Turkish delight), small
souvenirs, flavoured teas and local delicacies – including the dubious sounding
“Turkish Viagra”. Locals come here to shop for bed linen and towels, as well as for fruit
and vegetables, coffee, clothes, pots and pans in the surrounding cramped back
streets. Outside the market on the Galata Bridge end, this is the best place to choose
olives from huge barrels, and many varieties of beyaz penir (white cheese).

This afternoon you will embark onto a Bosphorus cruise which is approximately 2 hours
and takes you along the latest palaces of Ottomans, the Dolmabahce Palace and
Beylerbeyi, as well as 19th and 20th century, beautiful wooden Kiosks. Mansions and
modern which form the elegant section of the city.

Disembark at Sariyer, near the Black Sea, and have lunch at a typical Turkish
restaurant on Galata Bridge with a super Istanbul and Bosphorus panorama view.

After lunch drive along the strait to the most interesting ethnological museum
(Sadberk Hanim Museum) of Istanbul. The Vehbi Koc Foundation Sadberk Hanim
Museum occupies two separate buildings. The original building is a three-story (plus
an attic) wooden mansion this is generally believed to have been built in the late 19th
century and whose architecture was inspired by European vernacular traditions. The
building, constructed of wood and lathe-and-plaster on a masonry foundation, was
known as the “Azeryan Yalisi” or “Azeryan Yali”.
