Death of a Salesman Act One 1. Willy was home because he got in a wreck.

Lindas alarmed because she is afraid that Willys become suicidal. 2. Biff used to be the most successful Lomen in high school, but now hes virtually a bum. Willy describes him as such and alternatively says he has what it takes to be a success in the business world. Willy is easily influenced by his surrounding environment and events. 3. At first there was countryside around the house, but now its become industrialized and has become crowded around their house. 4. Linda protects Willy and defends his actions. They can tell shes suffering, but they go along with it. No, hes lying to him to shelter him. Hes just got out of jail, and he needs somewhere to live. 5. Happy wants to settle down and stay with his parents; Biff doesnt want to stay with his parents. Happy isnt ready to commit, and Biff can barely maintain himself, let alone a family. Their upraising has mentally scarred their future relationships and has caused them to shy away from any healthy relationship. 6. Willy shows favoritism in Biff as Happy tries to grab some attention of his father. Bill is very playful with his father, and Happy is constantly trying to please him to get to a similar standing with his father as Bill. He feels theyre more intelligent but can not be successful because they are not well liked. 7. Willy is not consistent in discipline or his morals. Willy gives more evidence in his views of appearance as he insults his neighbor for being fat. 8. Willys disposition is very susceptible to his environment. His feelings change with whatever his perspective is of the most recent situation. His moods are not consistent, and hes showing early signs of dementia. 9. She reacts joyously and optimistically to anything he shares with her. Lindas reactions show her true purpose of making everyone happy and pleasing Willy. He is offended that his wife is wearing old stockings. It is a source of irony about the fact that he buys stockings for his mistress but not his wife. 10. Charley hears Willys fits and comes over because hes concerned. Charley feels Willy is a good guy going through a rough situation. They insult each other by calling each other cheaters, because Charley gets a good hand and Willy becomes jealous.

11. Ben is Willys older brother. Hes another one of Willys hallucinations. Willy foresees great success in Biff. He thinks of lost opportunities. Biff will be rich. Hes regretful over his lost opportunities to be as rich as Ben. 12. She realizes hes going through a mental decline and is trying to commit suicide. They are only upsetting him and worsening his mental state. She is trying to spare his pride. She loves him even through his ailment. 13. Willy sees potential for a profitable business proposition. Willy thinks Biff accuses him of being crazy. Happy shoots the idea of a business campaign for Biff and him. Act Two 1. Biff and Happy have left for the interview. He thinks the Florida idea will be a success, and Biff will get the job. 2. Willy uses the reference of Singleman to help his case that he can be successful with a nontravelers job. This lack of attentiveness shows Howards disrespect to Willy and quickly heightens Willy tempers. Howard is firing him. Willy has been there since the company started. 3. People who are more liked in life will be more successful. Biff is very successful at football. He believes that Willy has put too much emphasis on Biffs football game. 4. Willy is both proud and envious of Bernards success. Willy feels he has to prove Biffs greatness to compete with Charleys son Bernard. After the incident, Biff lost all motivation. 5. Willy considers working for Charley failing. Willy needs the money for his insurance. Willy believes that a person merely must be well liked. 6. Hes trying to hook up with a prostitute through lies, and he attempts Biff to lie along with him. Miller is adding weight to the ideas of unfaithfulness and lust. 7. The play is based off of the dementia of a salesman passed his prime who makes his family go along with fabricated success. Biff takes the pen because Biff believes it will contain some meaning to his father. Willy has gone mad, and Biff telling him the truth would only worsen his mental state. Biff is in too strong of an emotional distress to stay at the restaurant, and Happy is chasing after Biff. 8. Biff went to Boston to try to convice his father to convince his math teacher to change Biffs grade. Willy has been cheating on Linda. After seeing his fathers adultery, Biff lost all motivation. His father has been lying to the family all his life. 9. They left him crying in a restaurant bathroom.

10. He wants something in his life to be successful; the seeds symbolize rebirth and invigoration, because nothing in his life is going the way he has planned. He believes a lot of people will show up because hes well liked. Willys contemplating suicide so his family can use the life insurance money. 11. Willy cant handle the stress of his adultery. Willy believes Biff is blaming all his faults on Willy. Biff exposes the hose in attempt to expose some truth in all the familys lies. Biff is fed up with the lies that the family tries to carry on. 12. Biff cries into his fathers shoulders and kisses him on the cheek. Happy says that he is going to get married. He convinces Willy how much good the money would do Biff and the family. Requiem 1. A song to give respect for the dead. This act shows Willys decisions impact on his family. Finacially, the suicide was very successful; all payments were made. Emotionally, the suicide brought an air of reality back into the family. 2. Hes talking about the wants and needs of life being more than monetary value and worldy items. A man needs support, love and friendships. 3. Linda claims that she should have done more when in reality she was the only one to love him unconditionally
