Days of Resurrection As Christians, we believe that the road to new life passes through a neighborhood called Death to the Old Life. Rev. Mary Lindberg. One reality we hold in common is that one day our physical bodies will cease to function. We call that death What is special about our Christian faith is the promise that death is not the end. We shall all be resurrected. We will have new life. This promise is found in scripture and in creed: In life, in death, and life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. [A New Creed, United Church of Canada] But wait, theres more as the TV commercial goes. We forget that we can receive more than one resurrection. That sounds great, so why doesnt everyone want to have multiple resurrections? Because, as Rev. Lindberg says in the words above, The road to new life passes through a neighborhood called Death to the Old Life. And death does not come easy to us, whether were talking physical, emotional or spiritual. Death can be a pretty rough trip. Its a trip we would rather put off. We would rather cling to familiar ways of living with their well-worn habits, traditions and pitfalls. There are many kinds of death. Some are easier than others. Graduation means death to years of schooling. Marriage means death to singleness. Public service means death of privacy. In that sense, retirement sounds relatively easy. Death to having to get up at 6:00AM every morning and commute to work? That doesnt sound so bad. Death to late night meetings? Death to working weekends? Bring it on! I can do this! But then, there are those other, more difficult aspects of dying associated with the retirement of a pastor. I shall very much miss the greetings, the hugs, the familiar structure of litanies and worship. I shall miss learning with and from you during Christian education classes, and the easy bantering and exchanges of news about family, pets and life. I shall miss looking up at Tabitha, the stained glass window closest to the chancel on the lectern side of the sanctuary. But wait, theres more there will be new life beyond June 30th, my last Sunday with you. Linda and I are looking forward to hosting three of our grandchildren, taking them to Williamsburg and Jamestown, to Washington, DC, and canoeing down the James River. Weve always wanted to go to New York to see the city dressed up for Christmas, so were making plans to go there in November. And theres the simple enjoyment of being home with family on Christmas Eve for the first time in over 20-years. So, it will be with tears in our eyes, but a sense of adventure in our hearts, that we will depart, praying for new life for you and new life for us in the weeks and years ahead, but always giving thanks to God for granting us these ten wonderful years serving with you here at St. Johns. Blessings be upon you all on your journey to new life,
St. Johns is a community of faith centered in Jesus Christ, seeking guidance and direction through the Holy Spirit, and demonstrating Gods love to all people in words and deeds.
