(01) Being the engineer in-charge of constructing foundations and basements of high rise buildings, you are required to have an adequate knowledge of the types of earth moving equipment that will be needed depending on the condition at the site. (a) List and describe all types of earth moving equipment that will be required, and also (b) Identify activities in your piling and foundation construction work where hoisting equipment are frequently used and describe the different types of hoisting machines you will need for different purposes. (2) The quality of workmanship is important to ensure the strength and durability of concrete. Discuss the following in relation to this statement. (a). List and explain all the precautions you would take when compacting concrete using an internal vibrator. (b). Explain what is meant by entrapped air and entrained air (03) It is important to stick to correct practices at construction sites where concreting is carried out to obtain maximum expected benefits. (a). Explain about construction joints, reasons for providing them, and their suitable locations. (b). Explain the importance of curing of concrete, why we do it, and how we do it at the site. (04) What does the 'wearing surface' of a road means? Give the reasons for surfacing a road. Draw a neat sketch of a cross section of a road in a cut and fill section indicating all the important features of it. Describe in detail the different types of road surfacing that are available in the country.
