On April 10, community, labor and immigrant rights supporters and immigrant families converged on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, urging Congress to pass common sense immigration reform in 2013 that includes a clear and direct path to citizenship for the nations 11 million undocumented immigrants. NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous delivered the keynote address. Addressing a fiery crowd that seemed determined to outlast the heat and let their voices be heard, Jealous invigorated the activists with his speech. Speaking of the importance of the pledge of allegiance and the end of the poem reading one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, he stated: We say it because we want everyone to understand that in this nation, the greatest of all nations, there are no second-class families. That is our great American conviction. That is our great American destiny, and we will not let anyone push our ship of state off course. President Jealous then emphasized the fact that we are a nation of immigrants who had to fight off the tyranny

of Great Britain. Then pulled on the history of the civil rights movement being in its 50th anniversary, he said they too rallied and marched on Washington. Let us all have the courage of our national convictions and let us chart our course towards the day when America will truly be America and have no second class families! Other civil rights organizations and activists Presidents and executives addressed the crowds including: SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, UAW President Bob King, Vice President of the National Education Association Lily Eskelsen, CASA de Maryland Executive Director Gustavo Torres, SEIU 32BJ President Hector Figueroa, DC Mayor Vincent Gray, and more. The rally was hosted by local organizations CASA de Maryland an SEIU 32BJ and supported by prominent local and national organizations including the Alliance for Citizenship and the Center for Community Change, will close a week of action in which dozens of events were held in communities across the country to urge immediate action to address the nations immigration crisis.

Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity last week publicly unveiled a significant new strategy that will enable the organization to better build communities and serve more families by adding an array of home repair services andneighborhooddevelopment activities to its long-standing and well-known new home construction program. The new Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative (NRI) will initially target the Washington Park neighborhood. For the last 29 years, Milwaukee Habitat has worked with families and volunteers to build and rehab more than 500 quality affordable new homes, said Brian Sonderman, executive director of Milwaukee Habitat. But, we know that strengthening families, neighborhoods and communities must go beyond the new homes for which Habitat is known and of which we are extremely proud. We are now joining other Habitat for Humanity affiliates across the country to adopt a holistic approach to community development, working with residents, nonprofits, businesses, faith-based organizations, and local government officials towards a shared vision of revitalization. How it works Through the program, homeowners who occupy their home in the targeted area can apply for zero interest, partially forgivable loans of up to $15,000 to assist with critical home repairs, especially those related to code violations and energy efficient updates. Typical needs are expected to include doors and windows, roofs andfoundations, weatherization, painting andinterior flooring

The program is aimed at elderly or disabled heads of households or those with elderly or disabled household members, single-parent households, U.S. military veterans and large family households, being those with 5 or more permanent residents. Like all Habitat for Humanity home-building projects, participants are asked to invest sweat equity on their own home or another Habitat project, if physically able. Those who are interested are invited to attend twice weekly orientation sessions in the neighborhood and can learn more by calling 414-255-3565. Help an Ol der Nei ghbor thi s S pri ng Many older neighbors need your help doing yardwork throughout the year: spring, summer, fall and winter! Spring brings the call for help to clean up what winter left behind and prepare for Summer, which then calls for volunteers to help with lawn mowing.

Assistance available for seniors needing help with benefit planning

Hundreds of requests for help with yard care are made throughout the year. Volunteers help throughout the seasons; many projects are great for groups. Being a "good neighbor" makes a big difference for an older adult. The Good Neighbor Project matches able-bodied volunteers of all ages to assist with these outdoor chores throughout the year: snow removal, leaf raking, yard cleanups, summer lawn work, etc. Good Neighbor Volunteers can: Arrange Flexible Commitments Help Out for a Season or All Year Long Perform One Time or Repeat Group Projects Get Assigned Matches Close To Home or Work Call Mary with "The Good Neighbor Project " at 414-220-8648. This and other inititiatives are coordinated through Interfaith Older Adult Programs, which was founded in 1973 by several congregations on Milwaukee's East Side who were concerned about isolated elders. These congregations pooled their resources to more effectively reach out to isolated elders. The Interfaith Neighborhood Outreach Program is the direct descendant of those early efforts. Interfaith Older Adult Programs, Inc. (then Interfaith Program for the Elderly) incorporated in 1975. Since then Interfaith has replicated those early efforts of Milwaukee's East Side to provide a countywide Neighborhood Outreach Program with 14 offices supported by 200 congregations.

Importantly, Habitats local NRI will also include new community development activities. Working with area nonprofit partners, churches, government agencies and neighbors, Habitat will identify areas of greatest need related to public safety, youth development and resident leadership, and respond with appropriate programs and services. These may include neighborhood watches, financial literacy programs, community gardens and help with neighborhood school improvements. Focus on Washington Park, an area of significant need Though broadening its scope, Milwaukee Habitats core mission remains helping families achieve stable, affordable housing. The City of Milwaukee continues to feel the effects of destabilized housing, particularly in the Washington Park, Metcalf and Amani neighborhoods where there are high concentrations of homes in foreclosure and dilapidated, vacant or abandoned homes. With residents under severe economic stress from falling behind on their mortgages or losing their homes, these three neighborhoods have crime rates that are four times the city average; generate eight percent of the citys crime and13 percent of the citys violent crimes, including 13 homicides, 1,500 aggravated assaults, and 400 robberies in 2012; and placed more than 17,000 calls to the Milwaukee Police Department last year. Outcomes Through our traditional home building model and our new Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, Milwaukee Habitat continues its ongoing work to stabilize and revitalize neighborhoods through new and existing homeownership, said Sonderman. Habitat for Humanity research shows that

...Habitat for Humanity

homeownership provides a broad range of benets to individual homeowners and to society as a whole: Children of homeowners do better in school, including achieving higher standardized test scores, graduation rates and postsecondary education attainment. Once they begin working, children of homeowners earn more, are less likely to rely on government assistance and are more likely to be homeowners themselves. Homeownership acts as a powerful economic stimulus, beneting the individual homeowner and the local and national economy. Homeownership benets neighborhoods, providing economic and social capital. Homeowners are more likely to participate in local organizations, and homeownership in distressed communities raises neighborhood property values by a signicant amount. Funding The new NRI strategy is supported by several major local funders who embrace Habitats vision. Funders include, Joy Global, The Harley-Davidson Foundation, Wells Fargo, and The Brewers Community Foundation. Harley-Davidson Motor Company has long been a supporter of Habitats mission, said Tonit Calaway, president of The Harley-Davidson Foundation and vice president of human resources for Harley-Davidson Motor Company. We have seen the tremendous impact that a stable home can have for an individual family, and we look forward to being part of Habitats new initiative to work with neighborhood organizations and others to address the housing challenges in Washington Park. At Harley-Davidson, we fulfill dreams of personal freedom. By helping to transform this neighborhood into a safe, vibrant community of choice, many others dreams will be fulfilled.

Ci ty on the Hi l l offers Chri st-centered model of servi ce Located in the heart of Milwaukee - America's 4th poorest city, where more than 62,000 children are living in poverty - City on a Hill is working to bring transformation to central city neighborhoods. Through a collaborative and Christ-centered model of service, they are working to restore hope, reduce poverty, strengthen families, and foster racial reconciliation. Their priorities include: educating youth, empowering parents, equipping leaders for urban ministry, and engaging churches in social justice. Their mission is to save the children, reach the parents and change the city. Hi story of Ci ty on a Hi l l On December 29, 2000, City on a Hill received four large buildings that once served as a major hospital in Milwaukee's central city. This unprecedented gift returned the property to its original mission more than a century ago - to serve the poor as an expression of faith. In 1863, a brick farmhouse on this hilltop property was purchased by a group of Christians and converted into a hospital. The mission of the Lutheran Deaconesses who staffed it was to practice the tenets of their faith by caring for the medical needs of the poor. Area congregations donated medicines, beds, ice and livestock to support their effort. Early on, the ministry faced opposition from those who considered the hospital a source of contagious disease, but supporters rallied repeatedly to expand its capacity to serve. For decades, Milwaukee Hospital, later called Lutheran Hospital, was operated as a charitable facility, with volunteer physicians and staff. Eventually the hospital garnered philanthropic support, developed other funding streams, and became a prominent medical institution. Later, however, changes in medical technology, health care financing and neighborhood demographics led to the decline of the hospital, which eventually merged with another to become Good Samaritan Medical Center. In the mid-1990s the medical center's owner, Aurora Health Care, struggling with mounting losses, merged its services into another nearby central city hospital, leaving six large buildings vacant. In August of 2000, a local Assemblies of God ministry

and a large national organization, Convoy of Hope, conducted a community outreach event on the parking lot of the vacant hospital. Eight thousand neighborhood residents attended the free event, benefiting from a job fair, health services, children's games, food distribution, haircuts, and many other activities. Impressed by the event and concerned about the deterioration of the neighborhood, the owners initiated a discussion with the board of the local Urban Ministry Center. Four months later Aurora transferred its four remaining buildings totaling 321,000 square feet to the newly incorporated non-profit organization, known today as City on a Hill. This property in the heart of Milwaukee is now being returned to its original mission - to serve the poor in Milwaukee's central city. This time Christians are working together to meet not only the physical needs, but also the spiritual needs of impoverished families. City on a Hill's mission is to be a catalyst working to save children, reach parents and transform families in Milwaukee's central city neighborhoods. City on a Hill is contributing to transformation in the neighborhood, reconciliation in the city, and revitalization in partner churches. Like the hospital's founders, City on a Hill is relying on the support of donors who contribute tens of thousands of volunteer hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to meet the needs in our central city. It is also partnering with other organizations with similar missions, co-located in its facility. As Jesus urged his disciples in the Sermon on the Mount, the ministry's staff and volunteers are letting their light shine, like a "city on a hill." MPS student Lorenzo Contreras and teacher Carrie Felde in New York where Contreras accepted first-place honors for his Civil War essay.

MPS student wi ns 1st pl ace i n nati onal essay contest Milwaukee Public Schools student Lorenzo Contreras is returning home Thursday evening after being flown to New York to accept first-place honors in the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American Historys Civil War Essay Contest. Contreras, an 8th grade student at MPS U.S. Grant School, is the second student from the school to be flown to New York for the essay honor in two years. Last year, Vaughn Eviston-Jahnke, then an 8th grader at Grant, took second place nationally. Contreras 2013 first-place essay examined non-combat

deaths during the Civil War. Many Civil War battles were considered the bloodiest in U.S., he said. But while studying the war, he wondered about the other hazards soldiers faced. He looked into the impact of disease and unsanitary conditions in Civil War camps. I wrote about medical procedures and the way soldiers died not during battle, Contreras said. The 8th grader submitted the essay to the contest. Then a few weeks ago, the phone rang. The MPS students essay was tops in the nation. I couldnt believe it, he said from New York. I feel honored to be here. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History partners with schools across the country including more than a dozen MPS schools to improve history education. More information is at www.gilderlehrman.org. Grant teacher Carrie Felde, who taught both EvistonJahnke and Contreras, said the back-to-back honors were simply amazing. But the students did the work, she noted. I just guide them on research and how to search out documents, she said. Contreras and the other winners had the opportunity to tour a vault at the New York Historical Society containing significant historical documents. MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton congratulated Contreras, his family and his teachers, including Felde and

S eventy-ni ne MPS students wi th nati onal German l anguage achi evement honors Seventy-nine Milwaukee Public Schools students have won national honors for their German language skills from the American Association of Teachers of German. More than two dozen of the MPS students 27 received Gold Certificates for scoring in the top 10% nationally on this school years AATG National German Exam. Another 30 MPS students are Silver Certificate winners for scoring in the top 20% and 22 won Bronze Certificates for scoring in the top 30%. MPS Milwaukee School of Languages is home to 55 of the award-winning students, including 10 Gold Certificate winners, 24 Silver Certificate winners and 21 Bronze Certificate winners. MPS Rufus King International School is home to 24 winners, including 17 Gold winners, 6 Silver winners and 1 Bronze winner. These are incredible accomplishments that make my very proud of my hometown and strengthen my belief in Milwaukee Public Schools, said Dr. Michael Koch, chair of the Wisconsin testing committee for AATG. These young people know how much German has broadened their horizons and will benefit them in the future. We are proud to offer strong foreign language coursework for our students, including traditional courses in middle and high school as well as our popular and successful K4 through 12th grade language immersion programs, MPS Superintendent Gregory Thornton said. My congratulations to the students, their families and their

social studies teacher Darryl Alms. Contreras said after he moves on to high school, he hopes to return to Grant School to talk about his experience and the value of the contest.
