Here you will find out the history of the Trust, the body mandated by the Crown to negotiate and settle our Treaty Claim, WAI 116. This Claim was lodged with the Waitangi Tribunal in 1985 to highlight the grievances which resulted in the loss of our lands and mana whenua. On the following pages, we will tell you about the Trust, the Treaty Claim, our current strategy, and ways that you can register as a member of the Iwi and a beneficiary of the Treaty Settlement. ROHE PAGE The Waimahana tag is in the wrong place Add new copy Our tribal boundaries run between Oruaiti River in the West, following the coastline to the Whangaroa River, up to Waihapa in the South, and estward to Otangaroa. In 1922 the people of Pupuke donated land tou Iwi, so we could build a Marae, school and church, though Waitaruke is no within our tribal boundaries. HISTORY PAGE I mua ra, in the distant past, the waka Mamaru made landfall at Taipa. The captain was Te Parata. From there, the waka moved on to Taemaro, where he met his wahine, Kahukuraariki. They settled in Taemaro Bay and started the iwi we now call Ngtikahi Ki Whangaroa

As time passed and they travelled on to Waimahana, then Taupo Bay. Over time they expaned their rohe into the Whangaroa Harbour, then progressed up river to Taratara maunga, were they established inland kainga at Akatarere, Waihapa and Otangaroa. For hundreds of years they protected their rohe from surrounding iwi and kept their fires warm through continuous occupation. In the 1920s the Catholic Church closed the school in Taemaro. Land was donated to the Iwi to build a school to replace the one in Taemaro and Waitaruke opened its doors. It and has since educated generations of Ngtikahi Ki Whangaroa, and is the place where the original Marae, Kahukuraariki, was transported from Taemaro. In the 1930s the Mihipo Henare whnau built a Marae at Mangatowai. This Marae served to community around Akatarere and Waimahana, till the land was sold and the Whare Hui fell into disrepair. In 2006, the family who had brought the land returned a portion and the original whare nui is now being restored to serve the wider community. THE WAI 116 CLAIM

Much of the lands of Ngatikahu ki Whangaroa were lost because neighbouring cheifs claimed an interest in our ancestral lands. The Crown entered into transactions without any consultation with the tangata whenua who had primary rights over the lands. Since the 1860s the people of Ngatikahu ki Whangaroa have fought for land rights and petitioned the Crown. In 1985 Pita Pangari brought a Claim to the Waitangi Tribunal on behalf of the people, claiming the return of all ancestral lands of Ngatikahu ki Whangaroa. Since the claim is against the Crown, it can only return Crown lands. The claim was successful and the Tribunal released its Report in March 1997.
