Summary of Lesson Plan


This is a second grade social studies lesson designed to help students understand about groups and leaders as well as rules that govern group dynamics. It will give students the understanding of different places and communities where people work and live. The lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods (p. 26-29 and p. 36 - 38)

MONDAY week #1

G5.2.3A - Construct a simple map of the community. G6.2.2 I can describe neighborhoods and communities.

Have the container of drawing material in each group, Pick up poster board and any maps that I want to show the students. Make sure smartboard is ready.

TUESDAY week #1

This is a second grade social studies lesson that will focus on the big idea about how groups differ in a variety of ways. America has many groups and rules usually help people get along.

WEDNESDAY week #1

This is a second grade social studies lesson students will learn about community helpers and the services they provide to the community by touring the imaginary town of Jollywood and its workers. They will make a little book about workers.

A Hat for Ivan.

Bring in paper plates. Have students bring in materials to make hats.

This is a second grade social studies lesson designed to teach students about rural and urban cities. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods (p. 24-25).

MONDAY week #2

This is a second grade social studies lesson designed to teach students that locations all have a specific address. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods (p. 6667).

G6.2.6 Show that different locations have different addresses

Have student address for them to use. Pick up envelopes.

This is a second grade social studies lesson designed to help students learn about different traditions and customs that families participate in. This lesson uses the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook Neighborhoods (p. 144-147).

TUESDAY week #2

G6.2.3 Identify traditions and customs that families practice

Have pictures of the different traditions to show the students.

WEDNESDAY week #2

Teacher will have the students construct a community by using what they have learned in this unit. This model will include buildings, homes and other places need for their imaginary community.

Make sure to have the software Construction Kit. Pick up popsicle sticks and cardboard.
