SchoolDemographicsandHistory RESchoolisoneoffiveelementaryschoolslocatedinaruralcommunityin NortheastSanDiego.RESchoolismadeupokKindergartenthroughSixthGrade. Theschoolhasapproximately500studentsand24teachersandispredominantly madeupofHispanicstudents,withasmallerpercentageofWhite,AsianAmerican, andAfricanAmericanstudents.Amajorityofthestudentscomefromlowincome familiesandmorethanhalfofthestudentshavebeenclassifiedasEnglishLanguage Learners. Thecurrentcampuswasbuiltintheearly1940swithadditionsinthe1950sandis theoldestschoolinthedistrict.Portableclassroomshavebeenaddedoverthe yearstocreateaschoolof37classrooms,butduetodecliningenrollmentonly27 classroomsarebeingused.

Theschoolsinourdistrictlacktheformalsupportfortechnology.Thereisnota technologyplanoranypoliciesinplaceandwhiletherehasbeendiscussionitdoes notseemtobeanimportantendeavorbyourschoolboard.Teachersarenot providedwithanytrainingandtheyarenotheldaccountableforappropriateuseof technology. Duetothedecliningeconomyandmisspentfundsinthedistrictourbudgethas takenahardhitandithasbeenthestudentsthathavesuffered.Overthelastten yearsprogramshavebeencanceled,newtechnologieshavenotbeenpurchased unlessnecessary,andnoformaltraininghasbeenprovidedinareasotherthan

LanguageArtsandMathematics.Thebudgetsimplydoesnotallowforusto advanceinthetechnologicalfieldandnooneislookingforalternativestoour financialdifficulties. Thefirststepthatourdistrictneedstotaketosolveourtechnologicaldeficiencies istoimplementatechnologyplan.Wecandeterminewhattechnologywehave, howitisused,andwhatwewouldliketoaccomplishinourclassrooms.The budgetissuemaybehardertodealwithbutIknowtherearethousandsofgrants outthere.Teachers,staff,andparentscanformgrantwritingcommittees. ItmaytakealongtimeforourschoolstoreachtheIntelligentStagebutIbelieve thatwiththesupportofthedistrict,thecommunity,theteachers,andthestudentsit ispossible.
