The DECS can operate at different mode. Find attached a small application note. 1) Voltage mode Under this condition the regulator is adjusting the generator voltage at the parameter setpoint. 52J-K Closed and 52L-M closed. This mode is never used in parallel with an infinite BUS.

2) Droop mode Under this condition the regulator adjust the generator voltage at a value depending on setpoint and on the reactive current of the generator. Generator voltage = Setpoint E E is a positive number if you export reactive. E is negative if you if you import reactive. The absolute value of E is proportional to the reactive current. It results that the generator voltage is now depending of the reactive current.

The DROOP or DRP parameter is the generator voltage drop in % for a reactive current at 100%. In this case 10%. A normal droop adjustment is 5% for a generator parallel operation and more if you are connected to a bus.

If you change the setpoint parameter you change the start point:

D ro o p c i rc u i t e f fe c t
140% 120% 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% -1 0 0 % Generator voltage

0% R e a c tiv e c u r r e n t

If you change the DROOP you rotate:

D ro o p c i rc u i t e f fe c t
140% 120% 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% -1 0 0 % Generator voltage

0% R e a c tiv e c u r r e n t

100%

Now if you connect the generator to a BUS, the bus will hold the generator voltage, it results that the regulator will adjust the reactive current to find the working point.

D ro o p c i rc u i t e f fe c t

The flat curve represents an infinite bus. In this case the regulator will adjust the reactive current of the generator to find the intersection of the 2 lines. Now if you Change the setpoint you change the reactive current. If the line voltage change, the reactive will change. If you change the DROOP parameter you change the reactive. Now you can understand why it is not possible to use the regulator in voltage mode, because if the droop circuit is disabled you have 2 lines parallel without a working point. This mode is with 52J-K closed, 52L-M open. If the customer want to have a constant power factor, the only way to change the reactive current is to change setpoint and has to be readjusted every time that the line voltage change or the active power change.
