FCCLA Knowledge Bowl Team Competes in State

Thirty-six teams of students from across the state competed in an Online Knowledge Bowl competition the week of September 26 th-October 2nd. Among those teams was a group of students from Montgomery County High School: Madison Chambers, Zachary Chambers, Hillary Davis, Karly McDonald, and Cheyenne Willhite. The team qualified to represent our school in the Top 16 Finals, which was held on October 10 at the Georgia National Fair. At the fair, Madison Chambers served as the alternate, while the other four team members competed against Westover High School from Albany. The team from MCHS was defeated in a close match. To prepare for this event, students began in August studying over 300 questions that covered facts about FCCLA, the history of FCCLA, and general Family and Consumer Sciences knowledge. Three of the team members, Hillary, Karly and Cheyenne, are veterans of the team, while this was the first year competing for Zachary and Madison. Zachary is a graduating senior, so he will not be able to return to the team next year, but the rest of the team plans to come back stronger than ever! In 2010, MCHS had the State Winning Team, so the team is

FCCLA holds annual Sprit-Link Fundraiser

Since 2006, Montgomery County High School FCCLA has held a fundraiser during the week of Homecoming activities. The fundraiser is always a hit because it involves a competition between the classes. During Homecoming Week at MCHS, students compete in daily competitions to see which class has the most spirit and can win the title of best class for the year. One of the competitions is the Spirit Link Fundraiser sponsored by FCCLA. Students are asked to donate their spare change, and for every $.10 that is donated, one link is added to the Spirit Chain, which is used to decorate the football field for Friday nights game. In previous years, as many as 6,000 links have been sold. This year, over 2,000 were sold, which enabled FCCLA to raise just over $200. The money raised is going to be donated to two FCCLA Outreach Projects: Share Our Strength, which helps combat childhood hunger, and The Monica Sandoval Scholarship Fund. Monica is a member of Georgia FCCLA and is combating Leukemia for the 2nd time in her life. The Senior Class bought the most spirit links this year, followed closely by the Juniors. The activity is a lot of fun, and we hope this money will make a difference in the lives of many people across the nation.

Wyche Represents MCHS at National Competition

More than 6,800 nationwide members, advisers, alumni, and guests of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), gathered in Orlando, Florida, July 8 -12 for the 2012 National Leadership Conference. Whitney Wyche, a junior at Montgomery County High School, was among them. This year s student-originated theme for the annual national meeting was #realitycheck. Throughout the 5-day convention, participants examined and discussed several issues, including family, school and community violence prevention, physical as well as financial fitness, future career exploration and countless community service projects. Relevant youth issues, such as the changing roles of men and women in the home and workplace, leadership, and obesity prevention were also explored at the meeting through presentations, workshops, and youth sessions. Over 3,600 students competed in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) which are competitive events that build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills. Whitney competed in the Environmental Ambassador category, with her project entitled The Impact of Our Carbon Footprints and won a Silver Medal. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education.
