BOOKS
AFRICAN VIOLET
African Violet,Amabooks, 2012

The collection includes the story of the life and times of a war hero who discovers the oddities of the world and returns to his home to declare his own form of independence....the story of an inveterate chancer and drunk who gives a command performance as he outwits his boss and the tale of a severed leg in a tree that leads a maverick investigator down the darkest of trails... The fteen stories in the collection show yet again the richness and range of current writing on the continent. They underline the primacy of the short story, with its oral antecedents, at the very heart of African literature. The Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee commented that 'over the past ten years, the Caine Prize has done a great deal to foster writing in Africa and bring exciting new African writers to the attention of wider audiences.'

Dazzling and splendidly diverse The Times, London

A vital collection drawing on a rich treasury of material The Guardian, London

WHERE TO NOW?
Where to Now, Amabooks

WHERE TO NOW? Penned by a range of award-winning Zimbabwean authors. Editor Jane Morris runs Zimbabwean publishing house amaBooks with Brian Jones. She is originally from Ebbw Vale, Wales, and comes back to visit whenever she can.

Meet the prostitute who gets the better of her brothers when they try to marry her o , the wife who is absolved of adultery, the hero who drowns in a bowser of cheap beer, the poetry slammer who doesnt get to perform his nal poem, and many more.

The writing in this collection of short stories from Zimbabwe, edited by Jane Morris, is at times dark, at times laced with comedy. Set against the backdrop of Zimbabwes lost decade of rampant in ation, violence, economic collapse and the ight of many of its citizens, its people are left to wonder Where to now?

For more than 20 years, the Dance Trust of Zimbabwe (DTZ), has successfully introduced danceto Zimbabweans in its various forms.
The organization has also implemented ve Dance Foundation Course programs in which morethan 60 youths were trained in various forms of dance education among which: Ballettechnique, Contemporary and Traditional dance disciplines as well as theory. The National Ballet, which is the amateur classical ballet company strives to maintain a highstandard of dance by encouraging its young members to reach their future potential. Dancersfrom the various studios are invited to audition once they reach a speci ed standard, and, ifaccepted in to the company, get the opportunity to develop their dance education by beingexposed to a variety of teachers and choreographers. The company also provides its members with the opportunity to perform in annual productions as well as hosting other productions thatgive ALL dancers an opportunity to perform. The rst 7 Dance Foundation Course (DFC) graduates were used as the basis to form The Tumbuka Professional Dance Company and the remaining 8 were enrolled to commence the Outreach Teaching project. Tumbukais a Shona word which means to bloom or to ower. It was founded in 1992 and has developed a unique image over the years in uencing dance not only in Zimbabwe but in Africa. It combines and integrates elements of traditional dance with contemporary idioms and movements using an eclectic selection of music (live or otherwise). The vision of the DFC is to become a Centre of Excellence in Dance Training for the SADC region. The 2008 2011 period proved that the e orts towards this goal are visible since among the 2011 graduates, were one Mozambican and two Malawians. The DFC strives to continue in this path of South South collaboration as well as to reinforce a decentralized recruitment of candidates for a strong national identity and representation. North South working collaborations are also made possible with the assistance of international donors locally based with the aim of development, exchange and productions. To date the DFC counts more than 60 graduates who bene tted from the 3 year course, the northsouth collaboration, the south south collaborations and other initiatives. The DFC has a varied and comprehensive arts curriculum with a particular emphasis on all of the dance disciplines. The course has been tailored over the years to be relevant to Zimbabwe and Zimbabweans. The program is designedto give a broad based foundation of techniques and as wide an experience of dance as possibleand related performing arts disciplines.

bloom or to ower
The Dance Foundation Course (DFC) is the 3 year Professional Training Program of the DanceTrust of Zimbabwe and is a pool to provide trained dancers for Tumbuka Dance Company and the Outreach team of teachers as well as other dance or performing arts initiatives. Because of this aspect, within the DTZ, the DFC is considered as the link to Tumbuka Dance company and Outreach.

The Dance Trust of Zimbabwe is the restructured institution resulting from the National Ballet formed approximately fty years ago by teachers and lovers of ballet. The name National Ballet was chosen because, at the time, it was possible for the institution to operate on a national level. The National Ballet was registered as a Welfare Organization in 1978. The original members of the National Ballet were dancers, teachers or persons, who were interested in furthering the cause and course of ballet in Zimbabwe. The National Ballet members and The Friends of Ballet were instrumental in raising the funds required to buy the land and build the Centre as it stands today.

Windows 8 Pro (x86) on a Samsung Series 7 tablet (pictured above). On the front theres a 11.6-inch 1366768 display, around the edges there are USB, micro-HDMI, and micro SD slots, and under the hood theres an Intel Core i5-2467M CPU (dual-core Sandy Bridge, HD 3000 integrated graphics) clocked at 1.6GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. In short, its one of the best tablets on the market. 16

WINDOWS Metro Start Screen

Metro Start screen, and the live tiles burst into life, you immediately want to around the Metro interface is almost joyous.

here are four main gestures in Windows 8, and youll use them a lot on a Windows 8 tablet but thats okay, because touchscreen gestures are probably the operating systems single most polished feature. Once youve used a Windows 8 tablet, iOS and Android will feel very clunky and slow in comparison. Swiping in from the left switches to your last-used

youre given the option of split-screening the app (more on that later). If you swipe in from the left, and then slowly move back towards the edge, youre shown a task switcher (a lot like Alt-Tab). Swiping in from the bottom is the gesture for right click, revealing an apps context menu. Because this menu is populated by the app, and some third-party developers are lazy, this is generally the least-useful gesture.

Swiping in from the bottom is the gesture for right click

called Semantic Zoom, which the Start screen and many stock apps use and hopefully developers will use in third-party apps as well. Basically, by pinching to zoom in/out, you can move up and down through the hierarchical layers of an app. You can zoom out on the Start screen to rearrange your live tiles, and then seamlessly zoom back in. You can zoom into a photo, and then zoom back out to your various photo libraries. Again, Semantic Zoom is one of those cool gestures that youre really going to miss on iOS and Android.

17

WINDOWS 8 SPLIT, METRO FLICK

You should be glad that most of your interaction with Windows 8 will be gesture-based, because the on-screen keyboard and text input in general is bad. By default, you get a half-screen keyboard that looks and feels good, but its impossible to hit the keys in the middle without shifting your grip and on a 16:9 tablet that weighs two pounds (900g), this gets old fast.

WINDOWS 8 SPLIT, ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD (OSK)

The other option is a split keyboard, with the keys split evenly beneath both your thumbs. You can con gure the buttons to be small, medium, or large but even on the largest setting, I had trouble accurately hitting the right keys. There is also the problem that you cant see both sides of the keyboard at once. Overall, you will notice that Windows 8's touchscreen gestures are very uid. There is no push-and-hold that iOS and Android make such extensive use of. As a result, it feels like youre always gliding through Windows 8 at high speed which is a very nice change, if youve ever tried multitasking or rearranging your home screen on iOS or Android.

INTRODUCING NAMELESS
Two Zimbabweans operating in two di erent continents have been brought together by the love of music to come up with the rap group we now know as Nameless 263. Check out this exclusive feature we did on them to know more about them
WHO IS NAMELESS 263?
Nameless 263 is made up of Rhyme Assasin aka Tichaona Monera based in the UK and T9yce aka Tendai Murasiranwa based in Zimbabwe. The duo met at an institute of higher learning in Harare in the early 90s brought together by their love for music. Fast forward to 2012 they crew is ten years old and still holding strong with lots of material released and many features on publications covered.

So, what does the name of the group mean?

Well, according to T9yce the name Nameless263 has two parts to it. Nameless simply implies that the group de es categorization. It is beyond typecasting. To add to that 263 is actually the country code for Zimbabwe. So thats basically who we are and who we represent.

What are you currently working on?

We are working on a 20 track mixtape using OUR very own beats (Production). All songs will be written by us as we have our own Hip hop style which we want to showcase on the tape. The tape will be recorded in 3 languages namely Shona, English and Ndebele. It is due for release in May and will be titled Grand Synopsis. The mixtape will be distributed for free as they are trying to get as much exposure as possible with the release.

How do you manage to work together since you guys stay miles apart?
How they work is T9yce records his verses in Zimbabwe and then sends it to Rhyme Assasin in the UK who then puts them together with his. He also then takes them to the studio for mixing and mastering in the UK. They basically work with two producers namely Deep Voice in the UK and Tswarelo Mathobe in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. About the recording process Rhyme Assasin says its hard work but it has to be done. He adds that, when I go Zimbabwe in May it will be the rst time me and T9yce will be meeting and recording together for the rst time ever since. This is because all communication has been through the phone and email.

What do you rap about?

Nameless 263 touches on a lot of topics in their music. They talk about life - the struggle (a track called lets go), freedom (a track called truths and rights), party (Ndavafaira), unity (a track called asibambane/unity/ngatibatanei) and for the ladies theres a called Racheal just to name a few.

What are your plans for 2012 and beyond?

This they are scheduled to release a mixtape and their debut album will follow next year. They also plan to shoot two videos by June that is one in South Africa and one in Zimbabwe. Rhyme Assasin went on to say, our plans are to make good music and to be the best from Zimbabwe and eventually go international. We are planning to open a high quality studio later in the year in Zimbabwe because studios are too expensive and beyond reach of many so, we are going to try and promote Zimbabwean music and charge less but still make a pro t. We want to turn Nameless 263 into a record label because there is a lot of unseen Zimbabwean talent that needs to be showcased. We will also be working with other Zimbabwean artists to promote each other. Currently we are working with Outspoken who has great talent as well as Footprynce who is also based in Zimbabwe and we are looking forward to working with more as well.

Who is Rhyme Assasin?

Born in Chivhu 31years ago, Rhyme Assasin lived in High eld for a few years but grew up in Houghton Park. He attended a few primary schools namely Greengrove primary in Greendale, Glenview primary and Mhofu primary in High elds. For High school he went to a boarding school called Howard High in Chiweshe school for O levels and A levels at Christ Ministries college in Belverdere. He also did some extra classes at People college where he would then go on to meet T9yce in year 2000.

Who is T9yce?
Born 30years ago in Kwe-Kwe (Zimbabwe). They moved to Entumbane in Bulawayo when he was ten. He attended primary school at Ntabeni and high school at Mzilikazi high and thats when he started doing Rap in 1996 and he hasnt looked back ever since. He now writes songs every week so as to keep in good shape lyrically. T9nyce has been doing it for sixteen years now but hadnt recorded till recently.
