TW ask the class: Have you ever done errands or chores to earn money for something you wanted? What did you do? What are some reasons people work? What do we use money for? Record responses on Smart Board. 2. TW ask class: Has anybody ever heard the term barter before? What have you heard? If nobody knows, TW explain to the class what barter is: Exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money. Today we are going to be looking at and comparing/contrasting money and barter. 3. Go to page 264 & 265 of Communities textbook. Read the 4 vocabulary words aloud to the class. TW read page 266 aloud to the students as they follow along. After reading that page, SW do a pause and reflect with their shoulder partner. Discuss the chart on page 266 about money in different countries. Ask students if they ever seen money other than the dollar bills and coins we use. TW read page 267 aloud to the students. SW turn in poster boards. 5. Closure: In journals complete the following sentence: Today I learned about Assessment: (Identify forms of money used by people across time and space. Differentiate between barter and monetary trade) TW do informal observations during the pause and reflect sessions and Talk About It questions. TW also collect and grade the poster boards. Reflection:
Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part will be teaching them about money. Most students at this age should be very familiar with the idea of money. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most difficult part will probably be teaching them about bartering. They might get the concept of it, but might struggle to understand WHY people do it. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? To extend this lesson I could have them pretend that they lived in a time where bartering was the way people did business. They could either role play situations or write what they think it would be like. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concepts I would pull them aside for additional help. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may want to give students time to present their poster boards. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was coming up with the activity. I didnt want to overdo it, but I also didnt want to do too little.
