Community ESL Program Date: March 22, 2013 Class Profile

Length of Class: 20 minute segment (at the beginning of a 60 minute class)

Level: Intermediate

There are 20 students in the class, 8 males and 12 females, around half from Latin America, and the rest from Asia and Africa, ranging in age from 20 to 66 years old; proficiency level: Intermediate. Their goal is to improve their English, some for work purposes, some to prepare for continuing education, and some for practical, real-life purposes. This lesson comes close to the end of a four-month ESL course, which gives attention to grammatical forms, within the context of an overall communicative language teaching approach. The desired outcome of the ESL program is for students to acquire both conversational fluency and the language skills they need to meet their varying individual goals. The program integrates learning in all four skills -- reading, writing, listening and speaking using an interactive approach. Relevant to this lesson, the following grammar elements have already been covered during earlier classes: present, present perfect, present perfect, simple past, past continuous, gerunds, infinitives, past and future time clauses with when, and real conditionals. The focus of the 20-minute period is present unreal conditional statements. 1. Students understand the formation and use of present unreal conditional statements. 2. Students use these forms conversationally to express their interests in comparison and in contrast to other students.

STAGE Setting the context; warm-up First exposure to target form

AIM Students are aware of the class schedule and learning outcomes. Students reactivate memory of past (related) work. Students are exposed to target form (present unreal conditional statements) in authentic context. Students notice patterns related to target form and are able to articulate them as rules. Students discover how unreal conditionals differ from the real conditionals they studied earlier.

PROBLEMS/ SOLUTIONS

PROCEDURES 1. Walk through how class-time will flow and general learning outcomes (on whiteboard) 2. Call attention to previous class activity on real conditionals. 1. Ask students to attend to the main idea and show video (2 min.) 2. Whole class discussion about context and message of the video (2 min) 3. Distribute lyrics handout and ask students to read; check for vocabulary issues (1 min) 4. Show video again after asking students to attend to detail (how the unreal conditional statement is expressed) (2 min) 5. Pairs: using lyrics handout, students infer rules: what pattern is seen (if+simple past in condition clause; would+simple form of the verb in the main clause (result); use of contractions; negatives. Indicate difference from real conditionals 6. Clarify rule (2 min) also speaking about others (3rd person) 1. In pairs, each student shares with partner what he/she would do if they had $1M (2 min) 2. Each student tells class what the other in the pair would do, if she/he had $1M (2 min) 1. Students complete sentences with own ideas share with class

Students produce meaningful sentences in 1st and 3rd person using target form. Students generate sentence completions (recycling past vocabulary) using target form. Students can invert conditional and main (result) clauses; use were in if/conditional clauses, understand different written/formal v. conversational use; use were to give advice; distinguish between when clauses, real and unreal conditionals in speech and writing.
