Subalopanishad - The Upanishad of the child-like

Authors Notes The Subalo Upanishad describes the charecteristics of a child like seeker of God and why the seeker appears thus. It describes how the spiritual world starts from God and descends to the beings such as Devas and humans. It also describes how the world eventually consolidates back into that primordial being. Sloka: Bij agyanam ha mohahpanha vadyad vishishyate Nirbhijam tripadam tatvam tadasmiti vichintaye Word for Word: seed ignorance delusion is said differentiated Without-seed three-quarters truth thus-is-there meditate-on Summary: Unlike ignorance which has a seed in delusion, the three quarters truth does not have a seed. Meditate thus.

Summary: Even if completely eaten this is always complete, even when complete comes forth this is always complete, from complete if complete is taken, complete only rules

Sloka: Om shanti shanti shanti Word for Word: Peace, peace, peace Summary: May there be peace (of words, deeds and mind).

Sloka: Tadahuh kim tadaseeth tasmay sa ho vacha Na sanna sanna sad asaditi tasmaatmah sanjayate Word for Word: that how that was there your that said Not this this truth untruth from that becomes Summary: (Raikva asked) how was that? (God replied) Neither reality like this, nor delusion like this

Sloka: tamaso bhutadir bhutader akasham akashaad Wayuhu wayur agni agnir aapo anyah pritvi tadh andam Word for Word: from darkness primeval-element, from primeval-element space, from space air, from air fire, from fire water, from water earth, forming a sphere. Summary: from darkness came the primeval-element, from primeval-element came space, from space came air, from air came fire, from fire came water, from water came earth, all forming a sphere.

Sloka: sam bhavat tat samvatsaram atra ushitva dvidakaro Tad astangamima uparistad akasam madye purusho Word for Word: along with came that year there waited divided That eight-parts, staying above in the space, middle person Summary: That sphere, after waiting a while, split into two, the eighth-part stayed in the space above and (the rest) formed the primeval person in the middle.

Sloka: divya sahasra shirsha purusha sahastra aksha sahastra path Sahasra bahuh iti so agre bhutanam mrtuyum srujantraya aksharam Word for Word: divine innumerable faced person innumerable eyes innumerable legs

Innumerable hands thus forward of beings death creation immutable Summary: That divine purusha has innumerable faces, eyes, legs and hands and came forward as the immutable cause of creation and death of beings.

Sloka: trishiraskam tripadam khandaparasum tasya brahma abhideti Sa brahmaan eva vivesha sa manasan sapta putran srujat teh Word for Word: three heads three portions part-of axe his brahma being-spoken That brahma by surrounded that by mind seven sons created Summary: Three fourths of that purusha was axed off, to create the one called brahma, who has three heads, who then by his mind, created seven sons.

Sloka: virajah satyaman sansrujyanteh prajapatayo brahmano asya mukhamaseeth Bahu rajanya krutaha Word for Word: kings virtuous create as-lord-of-people priests their faces arms kings formed Summary: These ( seven sons ) became virtuous kings and lords. The purusha created learned men as from his face, brave men from his arms.

Sloka: uru tadasya yad vaysyaha padyam shudro ajayata Chandrama manaso jatah chaksho soryo ajayata Word for Word: thighs his merchants legs servants became The moon His heart became eyes the sun Summary : From his thighs came merchants, his legs came servants, his mind came the moon ( the pure mind being like the pleasant moon ) and his eyes the sun ( light from the sun to see; his eyes are the sakshi witness to all that we do, just like the sun and moon are said to be sakshi )

Sloka: shotrat vayuh cha pranas cha hridayaat sarvam idam jayate Iti pratamah khandaha Word for Word: heard the air also life-breath also in-the-heart all this becomes Thus is the first part

Summary: From his life breath came air and its commonly known that all this came from his heart ( creation was as his hearts wish ). This is the first part.

Sloka: apannaan nishada yaksha rakshasa gandarva cha astibhyah Parvatah lomabhya oshadi vanaspatayo lalatat krodajo rudra Word for Word: from petrified-air outcasts ghosts demons celestial-musician bones Mountains hair medicine plants forehead anger the-terrible Summary: from the Purushas petrified-air comes forth beings-of-lower-order (outcasts, ghosts, demons celestial-musicians), from His bones come mountains, from hair medicine and plants, the-terrible being ( Shiva known to be the destroyer and hence the connotation to anger ) from the Purushas angry brow.

Sloka: jayate tasyay tasya mahato bhutasya nihswasi tame yai tadvad rug vedo Yajur vedaha sama vedo atarva vedaha shiksha kalpo vyakaranam Word for Word: become then this great beings breath they-these-then Rug ved ( hymns or praise ) Yajus ( sacrifice ) Vedas (scriptures) Sam veda ( equal meters ) atharva veda ( hymns or fire-somarelated ) Summary: The breath of this great Purusha became the four Vedas.

Sloka: niruktam chando jyotisham ayam nyayo mimamsa dharma shastrani Vyakyanan upavyakyanani cha sarvani cha bhutani Word for Word: dictionary, meters, astrology, from this, logic, definitions-of-rituals, ethics, scriptures Commentaries, glossary also, everything also, beings Summary: ( from His breadth ) also came meanings-of-words-used ( of Vedic texts ), meters ( the way to recite the verses in the Vedas ), astrology, the various logical forms, the elucidation of rituals defined in the Vedas, definition and elaboration of righteousness and ethics, the scriptures, the commentaries, the glossaries, and other such beings. In short, the Vedas and all texts that help understand its contents.

Sloka: hiranya jyotir yasmin ayam atma dikshayanti bhuvanani vishwa Atmanam dvida karo ardhena stree ardhena purusho deva bhutva Word for Word: golden glow whose this spirit blesses worlds all This spirit made-into-two half woman half man demi-god became

Summary: This spirit ( of Purusha ) which is golden In hue permeates all the worlds. Dividing into two parts - half becomes the female spirit and half the male. As also the demi-gods.

Sloka: devan srujat rhushi bhutwa rhushin yasha rashasa gandharvan Gramyan aaranyan cha pashun srujath itaran gauh itaro anagwan itaro Word for Word: gods created, sage becoming sages ghosts demons divine-musicians Villages forests also animals created others cows others-like snake others-like Summary: ( becoming a demi-god ) created gods, becoming a sage created sages, ( and likewise ) ghosts, demons, divine-musicians, villages, forests, animals, cows etc.

Sloka: vadave itaro aswa itaro gardhab itaro gardhab itarah vishwambar itaro Vishwambharah so ante vaishwanaro bhutwa sandaghdwa sarvani Word for Word: mares others-like horses others-like ass others-like asses others-like supporter-of-theworld others-like supporter-of-the-world he in-the-end fire became burnt-up all Summary: ( he became ) mares,horses,asses, the supporter-of-the-world and its destroying fire.

Sloka: bhutani pritivasu praleyath apah tejasi praleyante tejo vayay Vileyathe vayur akashe vileyath akasham indriyesh indriyani Word for Word: beings earth destroyed-into, water fire destroyed-into, fire air destroyed-into, air space destroyed-into, space senses, sense Summary: ( as an end ) earth went into water, water into fire, fire into air, air into space, space into senses.

Sloka: tanmatreshu tanmatrani bhutadau vileyante bhutadhir mahati Vileyathe mahan avyakte vileyate avyaktam akshare vileyathe aksharam Word for Word: ( and continues to end as ) into a gist-of-all-properties, gist-of-all-properties into primordial-being, primordial -being into supreme-ego Supreme-ego into unmanifest, unmanifest into ever-present, ever-present

Summary: ( the senses ) merge into a one gist of all properties ( forms and names ), that gist into one primordial being ( having all information to create the world again, as-was ), the primordial being merges into the supreme ego, the supreme ego into the unmanifest ( too subtle for a material description ), unmanifest into the ever-present.

Sloka: tamasi vileyathe tamaha pare deve eki bhavati parasthanna na sanna na sanna sad ASadi itye tanni varna anushasanam iti veda anushasanam iti veda anushasanam Word for Word: into deep-sleep, deep-sleep into supreme lord, supreme state, unlike this, truth Delusion here by-him described controlled thus know, controlled thus know, controlled Summary: ( the ever-present merges ) into deep-sleep, deep-sleep into supreme lord. This supreme state is unlike truth or delusion ( as known here, in this world ). This is controlled by Him, thus it is known. The deep sleep here is like the hibernation during winter of animals like the polar bear, but very unlike this, as there is no nature left anymore, with the Supreme Lord continuing to play the gentle host, to the hibernating world, in its most subtle form.

Sloka: iti dvitiya khanda Summary: Thus ends the second part

Sloka: asadwa idam agra aaseed ajatam abhutam aprathistitam aShabdam asparsham arupam arasam agandam avyayam Word for Word: delusion this first is-there becomes Without-birth Without-being Without-support Without-Speech Without-touch Without-form Without-taste Without-smell Without-end Summary: That first state of delusion was not given to birth, being, senses, required no support and was without end.

Sloka: mahantam bruhantam ajam atmanam matwa dheera na shochati Apranamam amukham ashrotram avaagam no atejaskam chakshush Word for Word: great all-pervading unborn the soul of-opinion the-knowing do-not grieve Without-breath Without-mouth Without-ears Without-tongue Without-eyes Summary: Knowing that soul to be great, unborn, all-pervading, without sense-organs, without breath, the knowing do not grieve.

Sloka: amanam agotram ashirask apani apaada asnigda amalo ahitam Aprameyam ahrisvam adheergam asthoolam ananvan analpam apaaram Word for Word: without-mind without-class without-head without-hands without-legs without-attachment without-impurities without-purpose without-parallel not-short not-long not-gross-in-form not-atomic not-without-value supreme Summary: ( that soul ) is without any of the attributes that affect the physical body.

Sloka: anirdeshyam napavrutam apratarkyam aprakashyam asamvrutam naantaram nabahyam na tad ashnati kinchana na tad ashnati Word for Word: without-goal without-decline beyond-reason without-brilliance not-covered not inside not outside not that eats nor that eats Summary: (that soul) is beyond reason, as it has no properties that are within the domain of reason.

Sloka: kashchan ethad satyen danena tapasa anashkena brahmacharyena Nir vedanena anashkena shadangena eva sadayed yetat trayam Word for Word: few this truth giving-alms penance non-violence celibacy Non-agitation peace six-parts also achieve these three Summary: A few (who know the soul) also achieve the six dimensions of truth, charity, penance, nonviolence, celibacy, detachment.

Sloka: vikshet damam daanam dayam iti na tasya prana utram antya eva Samavaleyante bharmaiva san brahmapyate ya evam veda Word for Word: observe temperance, charity, compassion thus not their soul enters end but Enters-into Brahman-alone Brahman-become they this know Summary: He (who knows the soul) observes detachment, charity, compassion and his soul enters into Brahman alone, this is known.

Sloka: hrudayam madye lohitam mansa pindam Yasmin tad haram pundarikam kumudam eevaane kada Word for Word: heart middle-of red flesh ball-like Of-this that destroyer lotus-like flower like-this how Summary: The middle of the heart is like a lotus.

Word for Word: he joins there sees world-of-gods gods skandam? Jayantam? Also thus if breath-samana he joins there Summary: he unites he sees in the world of gods, gods like Skanda (son of Shiva) and Jayanta (son of Indra). If he joins with breath-samana

Sloka: pashyati devalokan dhanani cha yada vairambhena saha Sanyujyate tada pashyati drushtam cha shrutam cha bhuktam Word for Word: sees world-of-gods wealth also if by rambhena he Joins there sees seen also heard also enjoyed Summary: he sees in the world of the gods, all its wealth. If he unites with rambha he sees all that is seen, all that is heard and all that is enjoyed (by all the senses).

Sloka: cha abhuktam cha sachha asachha sarvam pasyati atema Dash dash nado bhavanti ta saame ekaikasya dva saptatihi dva saptatihi Word for Word: also non-enjoyed also truth false all sees there/thus Ten ten seat-of-energy becomes that in-each two seventy two seventy Summary: as also those not enjoyed, the truth and other than the truth and all else is seen. There are ten naadis (seats of energy in the body) and each has in turn seventy two branches.

Their collection develops and is shaped like a lotus flower. This collection (of naadis) looks like thousands of different hairs and are named as per their purpose. The heart of this collection (of naadis) is where the supreme, divine soul rests.

Sloka: kanchan kaamam kamayate na kanchan svapnam pachyati Na tatra deva na devaloka yagna na yagna va na matha Na pita na bhandhur bhandhavo na steno na brahmaha Tejas kayam amrutham salilam evedam salilam vanam bhuyastenaiva Word for Word: even-a-little desire desires not even dreams sees Not there gods nor world-of-gods sacrifice not sacrifice also not mother Not father nor friend relatives not there brahma Brilliance ever-existing nectar cooling Thus-know cooling forest there-is there Summary: There is no desire, no dreams, no gods or heavens, no mother or father, no relatives nor the creator. Its a state of brilliance, ever-existent, like a cool forest.

Sloka: margena jagraya dhavati samraditi ho vacha Iti chaturtha khanda Sthanani sthanibyo yachchati nadi tesham Nibhandanam chakshur adhyatmam drashtavyam adhibhutam aadityas tatra aadidaivatam Word for Word: in-the-path awakening runs plays he says

Thus forth part Location of-location is-present nadi theirs Without-limits eyes spiritual sight primordial-beings sun-gods there primordial-gods Summary: Once awakening in this path he runs and plays, thus it is said. Thus ends the forth part. Their whose nadis are located in that location (in ayam atma), their eyes are without any limitations and can see the spiritual, the primordial-beings, sun-gods and other primordial-gods.

Sloka: naadi tesham nibhandanam yashcha chakshu yo drastavye ya aaditye Yo nadyam yaha prane yo vigyane ya anande yo Hridyakashe ya ye tasmin sarvasmin antare sancharati so ayam atma Tam atmana upaseetha jaram mrutham bhayam shokam na antam Word for Word: seat-of-life-breath their not-bound (without-limits) whose eyes they sees their sun-gods They-whose seat-of-life-breath this life-breath their knowledge their happiness whose Sky-in-the-heart theirs they therefore everything inside pervades thus my spirit Their soul rests aging death fear grief not ends Summary: They, whose life-breath rests in me, see in the sky-of-their-heart that my soul pervades everything, see the sun-gods, are full of knowledge and happiness, their soul has no aging, no death, no fear, no grief, no end.
