SIOP Lesson Title: PCM--Curriculum of Identity and Alfred Wegener Content Standard(s):
VIRGINIA SOLs FOR SCIENCE ADDRESSED HERE Earth/Space Systems and Cycles 5.7 The student will investigate and understand how Earths surface is constantly changing. Key concepts include e) changes in Earths crust due to plate tectonics; ES.8 b) c)

Grade: 5

The student will investigate and understand geologic processes including plate tectonics. Key concepts include processes (faulting, folding, volcanism, metamorphism, weathering, erosion, deposition, and sedimentation) and their resulting features tectonic processes (subduction, rifting and sea floor spreading, and continental collision).

5.6 The student will investigate and understand characteristics of the ocean environment. Key concepts include a) geological characteristics (continental shelf, slope, rise); ES.1 b The student will plan and conduct investigations in which b) technologies, including computers, probeware, and global positioning systems (GPS), are used to collect, analyze, and report data and to demonstrate concepts and simulate experimental conditions.

Key Vocabulary:
plate tectonics sea-floor spreading continental drift ocean plates continental plates plate convergence plate divergence subduction transform vault

HOTS:
Lesson 1 could establish learner as a NOVICE within the PCM curriculum of identity. Lesson 2 establishes the learner as an APPRENTICE in that SWBAT: manipulate existing theories, see Science as a body of concepts and recognize connections between microconcepts; tolerate ambiguous nature of science; understand, identify, and analyze the relationship between independent and dependent variables, constants and controls. Content Objective(s):
SW not only learn about faults but also begin to understand what a geologist would do. SW begin to understand, through the life of Wegener, what it means to be intrigued by an idea:eg. Wegener's comments to wife about continents fitting together. SW see what the vocational opportunities are for geologists. http://geology.com/jobs.htm SW see what Wegener's difficulties were and how he dealt with them. SW think about how they deal with difficulties.

Meaningful Activities:
*Negotiated Criteria based on AID (teacher assist). *Design-A-Day groups formed (teacher assist). *Research project picked using I-Search. (see attached) This is necessary given the parameters of the identity aspect of the PCM. *Group investigation using:WebQuests, primary source material, and books. *Group presentation
