Creating Indian Language Documents

This document explains ways to create a Sanskrit (and other Indian languages documents using MS word or any other so!tware. "sing the steps discussed in this document# it was possi$le to create Indian language documents using notepad ("nicode %S&II documents ' not only MS word that supports true type !onts. Creating Sanskrit Documents

-nce the "nicode !onts are installed !or the Indian language o! choice# documents can $e created as explained $elow. Indian !onts are availa$le !rom many we$sites ' most o! them !or !ree o! cost. These serviceAminded hosts provide the !onts !or the $ene!it o! the users and the cause o! the language. ,. ;ownload Sanskrit 0556 !ont !romB httpB..www.omkaranandaA ashram.org.Sanskrit.itranslator0556.htm. The key$oard layout (/igure + was o$tained !rom the help menu o! the !ont installation so!tware. This we$site allows the users to download the tool !or transliterating the text using 7nglish language. "sing the key$oard# it is possi$le to do the traditional typing depending on the user3s convenience. This document !ocuses on using the key$oard instead o! the 7nglish transliteration route.

"sing the key$oard layout# create the document with Sanskrit and 7nglish !onts as needed. *hile sharing the documents with others# it is necessary to em$ed the !onts i! they need to $e shared with others. 6. To create Tamil "nicode documents# !ollowing key$oard layout can $e used a!ter changing the de!ault language !rom 7nglish to Tamil very similar to way shown in /igure =. Advanced Matras
Some o! the matras used in the recitation o! 4edas are not used in written Sanskrit and in regular text$ooks. Such matras need to $e created using special character codes similar to the Dreek and 1atin sym$ols. %s a simple example# the $eginning o! the =th stan@a o! Rudram was taken !or demonstration.

/onts such as Times Eew Roman# %rial# or any o! the standard !onts do not render the Sanskrit portions o! the document with such high reada$ility like the Sanskrit 0556 !ont. The Sanskrit document created !or demonstration purpose was opened in a pu$lic university li$rary with guest privileges to see whether the em$edded !onts showed upF the Sanskrit !onts showed and the document was reada$le with the a$ility to print. The same document was not tested with -pen -!!ice (www.openo!!ice.org . )lease !eel !ree to provide any suggestions or list any errors !ound in this document.
