Sample Lesson Plan #1

Latin I UNIT: Ecce Romani Chapters 17 & 18 Lesson #3 55 minutes Context of this lesson: This is the third lesson in a three week unit on Chapters 17 and 18 from the Ecce Romani Level I textbook. I taught this lesson to my Latin I class during my student teaching at Huron High School. During the first two lessons, students reviewed the conjugation of regular verbs and learned how to produce, conjugate, and translate four new irregular verbs. This lesson incorporates those irregular verbs in the context of complete sentences as well as connected prose. OVERVIEW OF THE LESSON: Quiz on vol, e; Parsing Chapter 17; Chapter 17 Narrative; Prepare for quiz on nl and fer. OBJECTIVE FOR LESSON: Students will demonstrate their ability to produce all present and imperfect forms of the verbs vol and e; Students will combine previously learned skills in order to parse Latin sentences, including those containing irregular verbs; Students will pronounce, orally translate, and summarize a passage of connected Latin prose from their textbook. STANDARDS (Classical Language Standards): Standard 1.1: Students read, understand, and interpret Latin or Greek; Standard 1.2: Students use orally, listen to, or write Latin as part of the learning process; Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through their study of classical languages; Standard 3.2: Students expand their knowledge through the reading of Latin and the study of ancient culture MATERIALS: Textbook vol/e quiz Parsing Chapter 17 Worksheet (Previous handout) PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: This lesson will require students to combine a variety of prior knowledge in order to parse Latin sentences. We will review individual elements as necessary. PROCEDURE: A. (2 minutes) Attendance a. Take attendance. 8:43-8:45 b. Discuss any outstanding makeup work. B. (8 minutes) Quiz (Standard 1.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of inflectional systems appropriate to their reading level) a. Ask a student to remind the class what they are about to take a quiz on. (vol and e) b. Ask a student what pattern the verbs follow. (They use the same Active Person Endings as regular verbs). 8:45-8:53 c. Ask if there are any last minute questions. d. Distribute quiz, allow students to work. e. When all students have finished, collect quiz.

Transition: Have students get out Parsing Chapter 17 worksheets from day before. C. (8 minutes) Parsing Chapter 17: Whole Class (Standard 1.1: Students demonstrate a knowledge of vocabulary, inflectional systems, and syntax appropriate to their reading level) (Standard 1.2: Students recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin) a. As a class, parse #2. i. Have a student pronounce the Latin; write this on the board. ii. Have students provide answers for each word, write their responses on the 8:53-9:01 board. iii. Ask about principal parts of fert. iv. Fill out the s-v-o grid, and have a student translate. Transition: In a moment, Im going to have you work in pairs and groups of three to do the last one, but dont move yet, let me give the instructions first. D. (22 minutes) Parsing Chapter 17: Small Groups (Standard 1.1: Students demonstrate a knowledge of vocabulary, basic inflectional systems, and syntax appropriate to their reading level)(Standard 1.2: Students recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin) a. Explain that I will be grouping them with people sitting nearby. b. Remind them that every student should write down the answer to every question. c. Encourage them to explain things to one anothermake sure everyone in their group understands the answers. d. Let them know they will have about twelve minutes to work. 9:01-9:23 e. Read aloud group assignments. f. Is everyone clear on what Im asking you to do? g. If there are no questions, have them get started. h. After about twelve minutes call the class back together. i. Ask a student to pronounce the Latin, write this on the board. ii. Call on various groups to read their answers, write them on the board. iii. Make sure there are no questions. Transition: Have students put aside parsing, take out a sheet of paper/planner/etc. E. (3 minutes) Verb Review & Quiz Preparation (Standard 1.2: Students recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin)(Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of effective study skills and habits through their study of Latin) a. Ask if anyone can remind the class what tomorro ws quiz is on. (We talked about this the previous day). b. Write on the board: i. Quiz tomorrow, nl and fer. ii. All forms, present and imperfect tenses, no translation. 9:23-9:26 iii. Same format as todays quiz. c. Ask if there are any questions about the format or content. d. Have students suggest study strategies. e. Have students open their books to page 128. f. Give students a few seconds to look over the paradigms, then recite the forms aloud together, doing the present tense of each verb twice.

Transition: Have students put away planners, etc. and turn back to page 127. F. (10 minutes) Chapter Narrative (Standard 1.1: Students read and understand simple passage of Latin composed for acquisition of content and language skills)(Standard 1.2: Students recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin)(Standard 3.2: Students acquire information about the Greco-Roman World by reading passages of Latin) a. Go through Chapter Narrative, beginning with line 3. (First two lines were read the day before) b. For each sentence: i. Have a student pronounce the Latin. 9:26-9:36 ii. Ask about brackets and clause type for any dependent clauses. iii. For any adjectives, ask students to identify the noun being modified. iv. Ask about case/#/gender and case use for ambiguous or tricky nouns such as neuter nouns and nouns in the ablative. v. Ask about person, number, and tense for any irregular verbs. vi. Have a student translate. c. After about ten minutes, ask a student to summarize what was read in his/her own words. Transition: Okay, well stop there for today. Go ahead and put away your books. G. (2 minutes) Conclusion (Standard 1.2: Students recognize and reproduce the sounds of Latin) a. Ask a student to remind the class what tonights homework is. b. Ask for clarification about what will be on the quiz. c. Ask how theyre going to study. 9:36-9:38 d. Have them recite the present tense of fer and nl. e. Ask for principal parts and meanings of fer and nl. f. Ask about imperatives of fer and nl. ASSESSMENT: Todays quiz assesses students ability to produce forms of the verbs vol and e. Tomorrows quiz will assess their ability to produce forms of fer and nl. Their parsing skills will be assessed informally in reading the chapter narrative.
