Latin I UNIT: Ecce Romani Chapters 17 & 18 Lesson #3 55 minutes Context of this lesson: This is the third lesson in a three week unit on Chapters 17 and 18 from the Ecce Romani Level I textbook. I taught this lesson to my Latin I class during my student teaching at Huron High School. During the first two lessons, students reviewed the conjugation of regular verbs and learned how to produce, conjugate, and translate four new irregular verbs. This lesson incorporates those irregular verbs in the context of complete sentences as well as connected prose. OVERVIEW OF THE LESSON: Quiz on vol, e; Parsing Chapter 17; Chapter 17 Narrative; Prepare for quiz on nl and fer. OBJECTIVE FOR LESSON: Students will demonstrate their ability to produce all present and imperfect forms of the verbs vol and e; Students will combine previously learned skills in order to parse Latin sentences, including those containing irregular verbs; Students will pronounce, orally translate, and summarize a passage of connected Latin prose from their textbook. STANDARDS (Classical Language Standards): Standard 1.1: Students read, understand, and interpret Latin or Greek; Standard 1.2: Students use orally, listen to, or write Latin as part of the learning process; Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through their study of classical languages; Standard 3.2: Students expand their knowledge through the reading of Latin and the study of ancient culture MATERIALS: Textbook vol/e quiz Parsing Chapter 17 Worksheet (Previous handout) PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: This lesson will require students to combine a variety of prior knowledge in order to parse Latin sentences. We will review individual elements as necessary. PROCEDURE: A. (2 minutes) Attendance a. Take attendance. 8:43-8:45 b. Discuss any outstanding makeup work. B. (8 minutes) Quiz (Standard 1.1: Students demonstrate knowledge of inflectional systems appropriate to their reading level) a. Ask a student to remind the class what they are about to take a quiz on. (vol and e) b. Ask a student what pattern the verbs follow. (They use the same Active Person Endings as regular verbs). 8:45-8:53 c. Ask if there are any last minute questions. d. Distribute quiz, allow students to work. e. When all students have finished, collect quiz.
