It remains the flagship brand of Symbiosis and is recognized as one of the best Business Schools in India. In the year 1979, SIBM Pune proved its pioneering self by becoming the only institute in Pune to organize a seminar outside the city precincts - in Mumbai. Soon the trend was set and others followed suit. The concept of Internships / Summer Training was another offering made by SIBM to Pune. It was in 1982 that learning cum training scheme was started. Supplementary training courses were included in the curriculum to supplement the Pune University syllabus. Little wonder that the same year SIBM Pune started being ranked among the top B-schools in India. The same year saw SIBM Pune organize 3 national level seminars all outside the city of functioning. It would be interesting to point out that the first computer that was installed at SIBM Pune was donated by students in 1987. Switch to the completely Wi-Fi enabled campus of 2005, also incidentally a students initiative SIBM Pune has certainly come a long way. In 1990, permanent affiliation was received from Pune University the only B-school to have ever received it. In 1996 the BASE programme was introduced, in addition to the curriculum of Pune University. The same year witnessed SIBM Pune shift to its new campus with well-equipped infrastructure. The icing on the cake came in 2002 - when SIBM became part of Symbiosis International University because of its excellent academic record. Further in 2006 the

We had even failed to do justice to the private sector in as much as we had not succeeded in impressing upon the students the basic framework within which the private sector had to operate in our country. The scope and role of the private sector in our country, in the context of national economic planning, was quite distinct from that of the private sector in the free market economies originally developed through colonial exploitation. Problems of development of the private and the public sectors were, therefore, to be studied and analyzed carefully in the background of national economic planning. Otherwise, we would not be able to translate the laudable goals of plans into physical realities, however sophisticated the planning models may be. The Indian Institute of Planning and Management had thus set before it the twin tasks: to reorient education and research towards the needs of both the sectors and to establish the link between the national economic planning and the development of private enterprises in our country. As an educational institute, IIPM aimed at developing a three dimensional personality in It student viz

29

(1) pursuit of knowledge, (2) commitment to economic, social and cultural upliftment of masses and (3) cultivation of taste for literature, fine arts etc. With changing times and near dismantling of the Planning Commission in India, IIPM aims to reorient the IIPM programme to the new realities of the Indian economic system while remaining committed to the basic philosphy of global humanism. In fact, while India unfortunately abandons principles of National Economic Planning, intellectuals around the world are waking up to the inevitable need for International Planning in the search of a more humane and sustainable society as man is becoming increasingly alienated from the society and violence - both internal and external - is becoming a trademark of the free market fiscal bottom line oriented driven system. Thus the need to re-focus on welfare concepts has actually acquired greater importance today. To make a happier and humane society, future entrepreneurs and managers need to understand not just concepts that are taught in traditional B-Schools around the globe, but also concepts of International Planning and Humanitarian Economics, which IIPM aims to impart.

MISSION AND VISION
The Global Outreach Program is an integrated approach in taking IIPM to a worldclass level, capable of competing successfully with the best. According to Inderanil Das, General Manager global Outreach Program, the institute is using a phased approach:

Phase I involved the introduction of the highly innovative Global Opportunity and Threat Analysis Program as a compulsory paper at IIPM. Students are given an unique opportunity to visit various leading international organizations like World

30

Bank, WHO, UN, and many more apart from management institutions and global corporates for a two week study trip to the European, American and Asian continents.

Phase II involved the introduction of another innovative concept faculty members from around the world visits IIPM campuses in India to take classes and workshops. These faculty are the best in their chosen subjects and represent Ivy league institutes like Harvard, Kellogg, Columbia, Chicago GSB, MIT and Yale apart from other leading European academic institutions of excellence like Cambridge and Oxford University.

In Phase III, as a part of the Global Outreach Program, IIPM entered into research and publications alliances with international academic partners. HR, Finance, Strategy and Marketing experts and faculty from around the world collaborate with faculty and researchers at IIPM on gathering and analyzing data on the latest trends and findings in the field of management. Recently, IIPM and Yale School of Management agreed to conduct a landmark joint research exercise: The Yale IIPM Stock Market Analysis report.

Phase IV was another ground-breaking approach by IIPM, whereby, it has now decided to expand beyond the national boundary and start up campuses in foreign lands.
Back

It is one of the most abiding and cherished memories of the academic year at IIM Ahmedabad - both for the newcomers who participate in it and the seniors who make up the audience. It comprises a week- long festival of inter-section cultural competitions. It is also the time when section bonding develops and students make friends who last a lifetime. T-Nite festivities are kicked off with a publicity run during which the sections scamper frantically to capture vantage locations on the campus and fill them with colourful posters and newsletters. The entire institute is converted into a colourful collage with each wall hosting testimonies to the creativity and wit of the students. A host of musical and cultural events take place at the mess every night. Louis Kahn Plaza (LKP) and the ramp become a beehive of activity as first year students display their abundant skills through skits, musicals, dances, and songs. The final night at TNite is an eight-hour marathon where each section is allotted two hours to present an entertainment spectacle. This consists of a number of events, including the class

70

representative act, the fashion parade and the Class Act in which all the students of the section have to perform together. The T-Nite is one of the long standing traditions of IIMA and a testimony to this fact is the large number of alumni who come back each year to view the final night, enthusiastically cheering for their sections as if they are students once again. As the event draws to an end, winning and losing become insignificant. What lasts forever are the friendships that are forged and the memories that linger. CHAOS
CHAOS: Intra-Institute Cultural Fest - January end
In a short span of just 6 years, Chaos has become the countrys biggest and best cultural festival. The USP of the event is 80 hours of non-stop entire-tainment, It gives students a chance to engage in a wild and wacky weekend of revelries. The event draws participants not only from within Ahmedabad but also colleges from all over India. The event features a gamut of cultural and fine arts events, ranging from choreographed dance displays and fashion parades to numerous exciting management games to tickle the wits of the best and the brightest who visit the campus. Plays, pop and rock shows, fusion and fashion shows, debates, quizzes, and Mr and Ms Chaos ensure that the atmosphere is always electric and theres never a dull moment.
BACK
