Project Proposal

The theme I have chosen is metamorphosis, which basically means the change between two things. For example; the metamorphosis of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. I have chosen this because the majority of things in life revolve around metamorphosis. Although you could come up with lots of ideas for boundaries and art on words I felt that I could benefit most from doing my project on metamorphosis. My project idea was going to be the change from a natural environment to a man-made one. I thought that for my ideas, I could link the two environments together. For example; a man-made landscape in the distance with a natural landscape at the front. Another one of my ideas was to have vines and ivy growing up an old abandoned building to show nature conquering man-made. My final idea was to make a 3D landscape, with cardboard buildings cut out and trees pained on the buildings with a tissue paper frog on a branch in the foreground. I looked at four different artists during this project. First I looked at William Morris. He did many floral repeat pattern wallpaper designs. I like his work because he uses the natural weaving of plants in his work. I then looked at Antoni Gaudi. I like Gaudis work because he used natural shapes and patterns when designing his buildings. I also looked at Hundertwassers work and like Gaudis work he uses natural shapes; however he uses bright vibrant colours in his work. Finally I looked at Peter Doigs work. He paints natural landscapes in a sort of abstract way but his methods of paintings are very effective. I have used a few different types of media whist experimenting in this project. I have used acrylic paint because I like that you can get solid colour when using it and you can get different textures. I also used tissue paper because I havent used it much before and I can look very effective when used correctly. I also used canvas and acetate; I used these materials because you dont really see these two materials in a piece together. For my final piece I could also use silk screen printing. I could use this method to layer both landscapes. I could also experiment with impressionism for example; painting using dots and dashes like Vincent Van Gogh does in his work. I could also use inks to stain the paper/canvas etc. For my final piece I would like to make a building using canvas, cutting out holes for windows and using acetate to act as glass. I then want to cut jagged shapes from the acetate so it looks the windows have been smashed. I then want to paint the canvas so it looks like a dirty building, and then I want to paint ivy growing up the building using acrylic paint adding texture to the vines.
