Overview

Project 1

February 7th

This assignment explores the discussion of genre. Genre is the classification or categorization of concepts and ideas sharing common features with similar purposes in mind. Music, movies, and even writing are subsidized into categories such as these. Genres of writing include newspapers, articles, essays, internet blogging, and so forth. The entire assignment is worth 100 points.

Draft Deadlines
Your first draft is due by 11:59 PM, February 7th on Blackboard. This date is marked on your Blackboard assignment sheet, your syllabus, and your Blackboard calendar. Your first draft is worth 50 points, so dont miss this deadline! Following this draft, I will provide you with instructor feedback and response. On February 12th, the class will participate in peer review evaluations. You will be provided with questions to consider when reading each others work. It is very important to maintain a respectful tone when providing constructive criticism. The second draft is due by 11:59 PM, February 15th on Blackboard. Your second draft should reflect my comments and the comments of your classmates. If there is no considerable change between the two drafts, you will only receive half credit. The second draft is worth 50 points.

Instruction
Part I In this assignment, you choose a movie genre and evaluate its qualifications: i.e. do all action movies require explosions and fight scenes; does every romance (or chick flick) end with a kiss or wedding bells; etc. This evaluation is based on your own opinion and observations. I want you to also explain why it is your favorite genre. I want you to convince me to enjoy this genre as much as you. This part of your assignment should be at least 100 words (about half a page). Part II Choose three movies commonly labeled under your genre: two which meet your personal criteria and one which does not. Write a magazine, internet, or newspaper style review on each of these movies. Convince me to see the movies you suggest and to avoid the movie you put down. Each review should be at least 100 words. These reviews include a graphic inserted with your text. This graphic could be a screen shot or a movie poster. You will have to cite the source of your graphic.

Audience
Write this with the Trojan Forum, our school newspaper, in mind. Your audience is this campus. This includes your peers, faculty members, and even the Provost. Your tone should be entertaining with witty insight rather than crude humor. We will discuss appropriate language, syntax, and tone in class.

Required
We are going to work on these in Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Word. Every computer on this campus has access to this technology. Pay special attention to Chapters 8 and Chapters 18 in your text. The first is Writing to Evaluate. A review of any kind is an evaluative rhetorical situation. The second is Designing your Document. We are going to examine some movie reviews and consider the arrangement of their composition to successfully fulfill their rhetorical purpose.

We will go over the steps in class to convert a Microsoft Word or Publisher document into .pdf format. We will also submit both drafts into your Google Site portfolio.
