Personal Profile

A reliable and enthusiastic Journalism student with an ambition to expand my experience in the media and communications sector. I have demonstrated a willingness to learn and the ability to come up with creative ideas.

Work experience
Sky Sports December 2012 Present I am currently working around my degree as a journalist within the digital media department of Sky Sports. I am relied on to write a variety of sports related articles including news stories, previews and reports. Working in the all sports section, I was quickly able to adapt to unfamiliar sports including ice hockey, boxing and rugby and to navigate a content management system. All my stories are published online at sky sports.com as well as partner sites Football/ Rugby365 and sporting life. North London Newspapers I spent one week with the North London newspapers, a company which produce local papers for Enfield and Barnet. I sourced, interviewed and wrote my own articles, including a new breast cancer scanner being used in North London, and a youth MP securing funding for a gang violence awareness campaign; links to my articles can be found via my LinkedIn profile. Working in such a busy environment, I was often relied on to organize my own time and workload, with just the notice of deadlines for each paper. This role was especially helpful in understanding the importance of good communication, excellent organization and a willingness to adapt to a live newsroom. Leeds Rugby Foundation Public Relations For three weeks I worked for the umbrella charity of professional rugby teams Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie. As a member of their PR team, a colleague and I worked on the task of putting together a campaign targeting the growth and interest of their Easter sports camps, which include professional players and coaches from each team. We set out goals of targeting specific press for each area in Yorkshire, and drafted press releases and emails to send out. Beale and company Solicitors LLP, Marketing Department Working for a week, within the central London office of Beale and co, I carried out a number of important marketing tasks. This included the drafting of spread sheets, mailing lists and research for potential meetings and events. This involved understanding the content management system and editing/updating the personal biographies of the solicitors with new information, and recent photographs, re-sizing and cropping them for the website. Met Air Radio During my second year of university, I was a presenter for Met Air radio; a student radio station which covered sport, film and music. I formed a team of producers and presenters to run a weekly sports magazine show that showcased university sporting events and discussed national sports stories; this was packaged together with humorous quizzes and competitions. June 2012-August 2012, Camp America I worked as a basketball coach, climbing instructor and lifeguard for Camp Horseshoe in Wisconsin. I

was part of the lifeguard team on Lake Snowden and also part of the rock climbing and high ropes course staff. In addition to this I was a key member of the lifeguard team on a 2 day trip to the river rapids in Nicolet national forest, Wisconsin and another 2 day trip to Bond falls, Michigan. I learnt during my time how to follow strict safety procedures and the importance of structure and discipline in two of the most high risk areas of camp. I hold the NPLQ lifeguard qualification and am also certified by Challenge as a climbing instructor for 1 full year. At the end of the 10 week placement I undertook 3 weeks of independent travel, visiting Chicago, Washington, Philadelphia, Virginia and New York. Sales Assistant at Sports Direct May 2009 - present I have had extensive practice in sales work; working in retail for the past 4 years. I have learnt the importance of maintaining customer satisfaction, working quickly and efficiently as well as having excellent verbal presentation to sell key performance indicators. My everyday tasks include serving customers, maintaining delivery of new stock, store maintenance, and assisting with stock takes. It is a fast paced job which requires exceptional organizational and communication skills. As a young working journalist, I have a personal blog which I keep up to date focusing on Sport and Politics, and I am actively engaged with current affairs on social media. Education Leeds Metropolitan University I am currently in my 3rd year at Leeds Metropolitan University studying BA (Hons) Journalism (BJTC accredited). A contemporary and diverse course, my modules include the NCTJ supported Media Law, Shorthand and Public Affairs along with practical multi-media skills which include Digital, Radio, Magazine and Television Journalism. This is supported by the theoretical underpinning of philosophical ideas surrounding democracy, publicity and the future of the media in a modern society. I have sourced my own stories via information requests, interviews and data analysis. I am currently averaging a 2:1 and aim to achieve first class honours. The Leventhorpe Sixth Form, A levels 2008 Drama 10 GCSEs Grade A-C Including A in English Literature, Drama and Religious Studies, B in P.E and English Language. Hobbies/Interests I have played national league basketball for 5 years, playing in junior leagues and mens division 3 as well as representing East England at a regional level. I currently play for Leeds Carnegie and last season we gained promotion to British universities division 1 as well as winning the British universities division 2 cup and league. Playing sport has always been a passion of mine and I believe this helps to appreciate the importance of relationships, teamwork and dedication to achieving goals.
