We are excited to welcome you to the 1st Annual Husker Greats Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at Revere golf course in Henderson, Nevada. The Husker Greats Foundation is a non-profit, 501c3 organization created to provide medical and emergency assistance to exNebraska athletes (both male and female), who lettered in their sport. Fans, ex-players, and coaches alike, all know the feeling of surfing the waves on the "Sea of Red" and identifying with the Husker Magic. We are the Husker family and family takes care of each other. That's what we are all about. All proceeds from the Las Vegas Golf Tournament will go to Nebraska Quarterback David Humm to assist with his medical care. David was born and raised in Las Vegas and has battled multiple sclerosis for over 25 years. Please see the attached Bio for more information on David and his battle with this horrific disease. Eyes forward, head up! When David Humm stood before a group of scared 14 year olds as their newly minted leader during his freshman year of high school, he probably never could have dreamed where his life would take him. His storied career started at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, NV where he would go on to become one of the greatest prep quarterbacks in Las Vegas history. His play turned heads enough in the then small town of Las Vegas, that over 100 FBS schools recruited him, including the likes of coaching legends Bear Bryant at Alabama, Ara Parseghian of Notre Dame, and, most importantly, Bob Devaney at Nebraska. Humm eventually chose Nebraska over all others, in part because of some unseasonably warm weather during the recruiting period. While at Nebraska, Humm set then school passing records, including being the first Husker to throw for over 5,000 yards in a career. His success led him to a 5th place finish in the 1974 Heisman voting, and in his three years starting, the Huskers finished ranked in the top 10, with his career record finishing at an impressive 27-7-2. His story, by no means ended there, as the Oakland Raiders drafted him in the 5th round of the 1975 NFL Draft.

Making the team was a long shot, given the depth the Raiders had at quarterback, including Ken Stabler, Daryle Lamonica, and George Blanda. However, Lamonica surprisingly retired and Humm led the Raiders to a 16-point comeback over the defending Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers in the final preseason game, cementing his spot on the roster. Ten seasons, two Super Bowl rings, stops in both Los Angeles and Oakland with the Raiders, the Buffalo Bills, and the Baltimore Colts, Humms career unceremoniously ended in Chicago after a brutal hit by Bears defensive end Richard Dent. Although unable to continue playing, the next professional phase of Humms life was right around the corner. Having served primarily as a backup in his career, Humm was tasked with preparing and studying just as intensely as a starter, but then watched, analyzed, and broke down most games from the sideline. This, in turn, led to his long career in broadcasting from 1985 to Present Day. Although stricken with multiple sclerosis in 1988, which eventually confined him to a wheelchair in 1997, Humm has continued to do pre and post-game broadcasts from his home office. Humm says, This disease doesnt define me. Its a part of me, but its not who I am. When you ask him about his life and career, he simply states, I loved every minute of it, and wouldnt change anything! with heavy emphasis on the words loved and anything. When he speaks about the game, Humm always delivers his responses and analysis with grace and a sense of romantic stoicism that only those that love it, respect it, and have played it at the highest levels can. He is a fan as much as he is a lifelong participant, receiving such accolades as being inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame in 1985, being the first inductee into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in 1997, and more recently being named an Honorary Nebraska Blackshirt. Even though Humm has been many things in his life, including broadcaster, Advertising Executive, and Heisman hopeful, his favorite things to be called are friend, son, brother, and, especially Dad to his daughter Courtney. Humm takes his successes, failures, and battles with his illness with poise, dignity, and the ferocity of a leader. Your quarterback is here, Eyes forward, head up, he is ready to call the next play.
