Name: Victoria Stinson Lesson Name: Classroom Signals Grade Level(s): 2nd Duration of Lesson: 30-45 minutes Content Standards N/A Learning Objectives Content Objectives Students will be able to use classroom signals.

Language Objectives Students will be able to listen for classroom actions and perform the appropriate signals during the Copycat game.

Academic Language Requirements Students will need to understand the term signal and what signals are used for in a classroom setting. Students will first define what signals are in the beginning of the lesson while engaging in a classroom discussion. Students will also need to know and understand the classroom actions associated with the signals (pencil, silence, water, bathroom, and question), The teacher will thoroughly explain what these actions mean and the qualifications for performing these actions. Additionally, each signal sign has a pictorial representation of the action and are color coded, which will support student students language development and memorization. Formal and Informal Assessments The teacher will observe students during the Copycat game to see if they are able to perform the classroom signals. The teacher will also observe students throughout the day to see if they need additional practice with the signals.

Procedure-Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks to Support Student Learning Anticipatory Set Have student come sit on the rug. Think-Pair-Share o What are signals? Have you ever used signals? When? The teacher will define signals: signals are gestures or actions used to communicate information or instructions. Instruction (I Do): Explain that signals can be used in the classroom to communicate with others. o Inform students that today they will be learning our classroom signals! o Explain why signals are important to use in the classroom. Quiet indicators of student needs Show students the signals chart (Attachment 1) o First, read the action. Next explain what the action entails. Then model how students should perform the signal. Silence: First ask students: What does it mean to be silent? When you see this signal, this means that voices need to be off, stop what you are doing, and look at the teacher.

Pencil: This signal means that the led in your pencil is broken (show students broken pencil) and you would like to get up to sharpen it. Water: this signal means you would like to get a drink of water. Bathroom: this signal means you have an emergency and would like to go to the bathroom. What qualifies as an emergency? Question: this means you have a question, comment, or need help. Students will copy the teacher by saying the action and performing the signal. Guided Practice (We Do)

CopyCat Round 1: have signals visible to students Students will get a horizontal line facing the teacher. The teacher will say an action and students will perform the signal for that action. Teacher: Silence Students: Hold up 1 finger T: Pencil S: Hold up 2 fingers T: Water S: Hold up 3 fingers T: Bathroom S: Hold up 4 fingers T: Question S: Hold up 5 fingers Round 2: repeat above; but increase the speed students will perform the signal. Round 3: cover up signals sign The teacher will say an action and students will perform the signal for that action. Round 4: repeat Round 3, but this time mix up the actions T: Water, Silence, Question, Pencil, Bathroom If students are still having difficulty remembering the signals, repeat round 1, have students get into pairs and test their partners. Independent Practice (You Do Alone) Students will practice using the signals throughout the day. When they do not perform the signal, the teacher will point to the signal sign. Differentiated Instruction (Some Do) This plan utilizes strategies that allow for differentiation such as: Call and response (Copycat Game), having the signal sign visible during the first two rounds to support memory, and color-coded and picture labeled signs. Closure Review signals- their purpose and why it is important that students use them. Ask students if they have any questions. Inform students that you expect that they use the signals for now on.
