IN AUSTRIA AT LEAST, PEACE DOES NOT REIGN ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN TOPS
Now, for the first time ever, visitors to the Schusev State Museum of Architecture Moscow can see for themselves the outpour of
contemporary art in the land of mountains. Austria Davaj! constitutes a follow-up and counterpart to the MAK exhibition Davaj!
Russian Art Now, that went on tour in 2002/2003. A successful and fruitful cooperation with the responsible museums and cultural
forums has made it possible for the exhibition to set new standards for international competition. The works shown here cover an
exceptionally wide range of artistic and cultural expression, reflecting the artists innovative approach to contemporary discourse
in architecture, design and visual arts. Yet different as these exhibits and artistic perspectives may be they all have something in
common: their courage to transcend traditional boundaries in art, to tread new paths in presentation and ultimately to climb the
height of creative Austria.
May this exhibition be as well received and successful as it deserves.

MICHAEL SPINDELEGGER
State Museum of Architecture Moscow

ALEXANDER AVDEEV
Austrian art, architecture and design deserve to be in the limelight of international interest. The exhibition Austria Davaj! was organized
by the Schusev State Museum of Architecture Moscow in cooperation with the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts /
Contemporary Art, Vienna for this very purpose.
I am convinced that the exhibition will stir enormous interest among both professionals and visitors with a keen eye on the latest
trends in modern art, architecture and design. This is indeed a very special event, as it is the first time such an extensive overview
of the latest trends and developments in contemporary Austrian art is shown to the Russian public.
I am confident that this international cooperation and the exhibition will set an example and a milestone in the development of a
cultural dialogue between Russia and Austria.
MICHAEL SPINDELEGGER
Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria
Russia and Austria share a long and fateful history and a cultural exchange which has left its mark on both alike. Both countries, in
their more recent past, have been subjected to far-reaching political, social and cultural changes, both have seen different cultures
come together in one place, two aspects which art in particular draws on to this day. Cultural creativity in music, literature and
visual arts constitutes a bearing element in the identity both Russia and Austria have built for themselves and the manifold relations
the two countries enjoy ultimately rely on the mutual interest each has in the cultural life of the other.
Austrian foreign policy recognizes the significance of cultural exchange as a major constituent of relations between countries,
special emphasis being placed on contemporary art and the support we award it through our international network of cultural
forums. Who better than contemporary artists to conduct cultural dialogue? Of course, in this virtually and electronically networked
world of ours there is still nothing to replace an artists need for studying original works and gathering among their kind. Mindful of
these givens I am particularly pleased to see a representative selection of some of our countrys most prominent artists joined in
the most extensive show of Austrian contemporary art in Russia yet.
I do not want to let this opportunity go by without making particular mention of the dedication and joint efforts demonstrated by
the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture, or without extending my personal thanks to all partners, the MAK Vienna and the Schusev State Museum of Architecture Moscow, as well as
the sponsors, Raiffeisenbank as the general sponsor, and Dorotheum who made this ambitious project possible in the first place.
I sincerely hope that the exhibition Austria Davaj! will be a meeting place for artists and friends of the arts and will give rise to fruitful
artistic dialogue in the interest of both countries.

CLAUDIA SCHMIED
Moskau.

Geschftsmodelle in Russland.
PAVEL GURIN
DEAR FRIENDS,
Raiffeisenbank has been committed to popularizing European art and culture in Russia since the day it opened its first branch here.
Our aim is to generate a Russian audience for European works of art and culture but also to sponsor outstanding Russian projects
in this field.
As representatives of an Austrian banking group we consider ourselves brokers of European philosophy, ideas and business
models in Russia. In the past fifteen years we have successfully held up western standards in business life and in our dialogue with
partners and clients. One important aspect in this is promoting humanitarian cooperation between Russia, the European countries
and, of course, Austria.
Federal Minister for Education, Arts and Culture of the Republic of Austria
Contemporary art, architecture and design are a mirror of society. The reflective and productive forces continuously released by
them are instrumental in comprehending culture and its further development.
Artists have taken to the international stage like few others, performing as key actors in cultural enhancement and exchange. Art
above all requires the space to present itself in, a place where discourse and dialogue can take shape. The exhibition Austria
Davaj! Creative Forces of Austria is just that, an exhibition organized in cooperation with the MAK Austrian Museum of Applied
Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna, the Schusev State Museum of Architecture Moscow and the Austrian Cultural Forum Moscow, a
place where visitors are given the opportunity to view selected contemporary Austrian perspectives from close up and become
familiar with Austrias current creative potential.
In 2011, the first exhibition of contemporary Austrian art is to be staged in Moscow in cooperation with the Schusev State Museum
of Architecture Moscow, the renowned MAK Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Vienna and our longstanding
partner, the Austrian Cultural Forum Moscow.
We gladly supported this much-awaited event since it places us at the core of creating a common cultural area for Russia and
Europein keeping with Raiffeisenbanks tradition.
Russia and Austria share a devotion to art. Time and again they remind us of their belief that a cultures significance largely
depends on its artists creations and steady development only comes about through creativity and innovation. Mindful of their rich
cultural heritage the two nations nevertheless dedicate themselves to current developments to ascertain their role in the pursuance
of living culture.
I greatly welcome our two countries cooperation in contemporary art, architecture and design and look forward to a great many
visitors to the exhibition Austria Davaj!.

Gediegenes, Bestndiges, lange Bewhrtes.
Hauptteil des Schusev State Museum of Architecture, wartet
State Museum of Architecture ausgestellt
werden. Das sterreichische Projekt ist dabei der erste
Schritt, ein Versuchsballon, auf dem schwierigen Weg,

Austria Davaj!here is a request that will take some getting
used to in Austria. In a country like this with such a long imperial
and royal past to look back on, such unshakable traditions,
such a high quality of life and steady middle-class values it is
common practice to address each other formally. Austrians are
extremely suspicious of unbridled experiments, they would
rather have the dignified, the solid, the tried and tested. One
tends to wonder who the Austrian avant-garde really was?
Adolf Looss architecture, Hundertwassers experiments and
the early works of Hans Hollein were considered revolutionary
at their time. Yet a gIance into the past reveals that neither they
nor the fearless Viennese actionists, who triggered a bloody
conflict with the conformist establishment, ranked in the first
row of the avant-garde movement.
Looking for avant-gardists among Austrian artists today is a
courageous and risky endeavor; an idea born by one of the
most courageous Austrians whose brilliant international reputation and life in the arts scene over the past twenty-five years
is largely built on a risky confrontation of traditions. Peter
Noeverthe name rings a bell in Austria and beyond. He turned
the Vienna Museum of Applied Arts, little known then and full
of mediocrity, into the legendary MAK, an international center
of contemporary fine art exhibiting the latest in art, design and
architecture.
When I accepted Peters invitation to become the Russian curator for his exhibition, which as it turned out was to be his final
project in his capacity as MAK director, I set myself the task of
establishing a dialogue between the Austrian artists and architects Peter had invited, the Russian cultural context and the
remarkable space offered by the Talysin estate (architect: Matvey
Kazakov). The building constitutes the main part of the Schusev
State Museum of Architecture and yet awaits its professional
restoration. From the festival rooms made available for the Austrian project, everything to do with the exhibition rooms they
served as during the past twenty years will be removed, leaving
them without cosmetics in their natural state marked by the
dust of time yet wonderfully noble all the same.
Each of the artists invited will be allocated a piece of the enfilade
and will make their special contribution for the occasion. The
experiment will grant a fresh view of the rooms in this old manor.
The rooms contemporary artists and architects will be appropriating themselves of, with a hint of the 18th century, will be
turned into a synthesis of the arts for the time of the exhibition.
I believe that energy supply like this, awarded by the most outstanding masters of the Austrian art scene, provides the right
foundation for developing new qualityonce restored, the
rooms will house the permanent collection of the Schusev State
Museum of Architecture. The Austrian project is only a first
16
p
step, a test balloon on the rocky road to reincarnating this exceptional architectural monument of Russian classicism with a
new quality. It is a contribution towards finding the right dialogue
between cultural heritage and modern architectural and artistic
thinking.
We, the curators, will process and at the same time direct the
experiment in its pure form as it develops. Defining a development vector is essential in this context. In many ways it is
already defined by the exhibition Davaj! Russian Art Now prepared and staged by Peter Noever at the MAK ten years ago.
The exhibition showed artists who performed in contemporary
Russian art without compromise, and introduced several new
names as well.
The Austrian exhibition Austria Davaj!, which sounds similar to
our long forgotten Dajosh so popular in the 1920ies, is a kind
of response to an invitation Vienna issued to the Russians in
2003. Like the Russian project before, this exhibition aspires to
discover and unveil to the world the avant-garde idea, this time
through contemporary Austrian art the fundamental difference
being that it does so without the conviction of actually succeeding. Possibly the projects main aim is to provoke, to challenge, as an attempt to stimulate the avant-garde idea. This is
probably why it takes the cultural exchange of energy with
Russia which is less affluent than Austria but always open for
new ideas and experiments. It is not by chance that the Schusev
State Museum of Architecture and the MAK consider themselves museum partners and even blood brothers. They were
creating a multidimensional, multi-layered and truly exceptional
project founded on past experience yet geared towards the future which it intends to daringly influence.
Thus, Peter Noevers early departure from his office as MAK
director, to my mind as a curator, constitutes yet another action,
a kind of performance forming part of the project Austria Davaj!.
This call of the hero, which rang out all his life, in all his projects,
in everything he did in Austria and abroad, in all his exhibitions
and actions at the MAK and in other places, always found an
echo and got the most creative in the world of culture and arts
out in full force. It is fair to say that Peter created new cultural
space, a parallel world with its own arts policy and a well calculated effective strategy of implementation, its own heroes
and anti-heroes. The MAK became the heart and brain of this
formation. Seen from outside, from Russia for example, the
MAK has become a vital feature of national identity for the
State of Austria. This is an objective historical fact. The creator
and true sovereign of this space now leaves his realm and in
Moscow (!) bids farewell Austria Davaj!. The cultural world in
Russia and elsewhere is poised in anticipation

differenzierter Weise. Die Werke, von denen viele speziell fr
diese Ausstellung geschaffen wurden, nhern sich diesem
Themenfeld mannigfach und erlauben somit unterschiedliche
Zugnge und erffnen neue Perspektiven und Visionen. So
Schusev State Museum of Architecture.
p
In Kooperation der beiden Huser entstanden bereits gemeinsame Ausstellungen wie Heavens Gift (2001) im Schusev State Museum oder Aleksander Rodtschenko. Raumkonstruktionen (2005) in der MAK-Galerie in Wien. Austria
Davaj! ist gewissermaen die Umkehrung und gleichzeitig
logische Fortsetzung der MAK-Ausstellung Davaj! Russian
Art Now.
So gilt

MAK sterreichisches Museum fr angewandte Kunst /

ON THE GENESIS
OF AUSTRIA DAVAJ!!
p
Austria Davaj!, an exhibition staged by the Austrian Cultural
Forum in cooperation with its Russian and Austrian partners, is
not just the biggest show of Austrian contemporary artists in
the Russian Federation to date, it is the forums most extensive
cultural project in Russia yet. Austria Davaj!, in our view, is testament to the priorities we have set in contemporary art.
Austria Davaj! is a one-off project in many ways. It was built on
the dedication of people who commit themselves to art wholeheartedly and who are willing to pull their weight, to give their
utmost each in their own field. These are people I had the
privilege to meet in the course of the project and whose friendship I have come to honor and relish. I would like to take this
opportunity to say a few words about the genesis of Austria
Davaj! and to express my sincere thanks to all involved.
When I began my work at the Austrian Cultural Forum in spring
2009 I had the idea to stage a comprehensive exhibition of
Austrian contemporary art in Moscow. The MAK Austrian
Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art in Vienna, the internationally most networked museum for contemporary art in
Austria and well known for its activities in Russia throughout
the years, seemed the most obvious partner for this endeavor.
Peter Noever, director of the museum at the time, and Tina
Bauermeister, his long-term companion and acknowledged
Russia expert, agreed at our first meeting to tackle an exhibition
project to this effect in cooperation with their longstanding partner, the Schusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow.
Peter Noever prepared the entire exhibition concept, he selected
the artists who were to vouchsafe the quality of the show and
supported the project throughout. Tina Bauermeister looked
up her great old friends in Moscow and tied up with Irina

sterreichischer Kunst fr Sammler, sondern an konkreten
Namen.
Kontext kein entsprechendes Echo.
europischen stdtebaulichen Umfeld verwurzelt.

Our team of curators, assembled and guided by MAK director
Peter Noever, project coordinator Christiane Bauermeister and
Berlin curator Bettina Busse, brought the first Davaj! exhibition,
Russian Art Now, to Vienna and Berlin almost ten years ago.
Our task was to show everything and show it right away, which
proved to be a veritable feat from the curators point of view,
seeing as we had to travel through all of Russia from Kaliningrad
in the west to Vladivostok in the east. In the run-up to the exhibition Peter Noever seems to have learnt Russian, Christiane
became a close confidant for dozens of artists in the country
and heroic Bettina Busse roamed Russian airspace, her newborn daughter in her arm, who by the time the exhibition was
opened had spent more time in Russia than in her home country. Neither the geographic origins of the artists who had come
from all corners of the worlds largest sovereign state nor their
affiliation with a particular generation were of relevance: we
had created a profile of time. Two and a half dozen artists,
each with their own idiosyncrasies. Romantic installations with
little dresses by the group Fabrik der gefundenen Kleider [Factory of Found Clothing], as well as the social absurdism proposed by the group Radek. Happy punk frolic from the Blue
Noses and Dmitrij Bulatovs terrorist sound poetry. Retrograde
solipsist Oleg Chwostow in his million self-portraits or Elena
Kovylina with her scandalous performances. Our mandate was
to help Russia find its own language and carry it across into a
new era which follows the one whose fate was defined by
Boris Groys in his famous article Russia the Subconscious of
the West (2011). According to Groys Russia entered the art
scene like a bundle of impulsive emotions and thoughts without
further reflection: an elemental force displaced by western intellect, something that does not speak, but it howls, it yelps
and it bites. In 2002 Davaj! still had to present Russian as an
uninhibited, albeit comprehensible and articulated language, a
language which started out with concrete positions and then
layered itself into concrete statements. Equally interesting (perhaps even more so than the exhibition itself) is the way it was
received in Austria, Germany and Russia, reception in the latter
possibly being the most revealing of all.
As it turned out the Russian art public viewed the Austrian and
German curators attempt to create a picture of Russia far
more emotionally than the curators themselves.
They accused the exhibition of being an export article only, of
abusing Russias image as a wild country with matryoshkas,
bears and balalaikas (the catalogues cover photo depicting
Blue Noses Slawa Muzin as a Siberian land dweller, donning a
fur hat with ear flaps and an axe in his hand, did not exactly
tone down this impression), of resorting to the usual Mother
Russia and Russian folk art clich, lending Russia in general
and its contemporary art in particular an air of exoticism,
notwithstanding the fact that the latter at the time was trying
with all its might to command the international language of art
and be on a par with others internationally. In a nutshell, the
exhibition was accused of everything it had tried to avoid.
Analyzing the surprisingly unanimous reviews I came to the
conclusion that the echo had been inescapable: both the contents of the exhibition and the question of whether it really consisted of colonial art or perfectly sterile works without any reference whatsoever to their origin were immaterial. We detected
a much deeper lying mechanism which had nothing to do with
art any more but was of a psycho-social nature. Whatever the
statement on a country, a nation or social group, as soon as it

uns betrafen, sind Unterrichtsstoff, Abteilung Geschichte;
Kulturforum Moskau.
Davaj, Austria und Russia, im Schusev State Museum of

In the life of a simple Austrian school child during the late
1980ies there were at least two rockets: the more spectacular
among these was the one which sent the first human being,
Yuri Gagarin, into orbit precisely 50 years ago. When you heard
about it you invariably wanted to see the world from space
yourself, you shared the dream of humankinds endless opportunities, of discovering infinite space and possibly a different
life out there of course Star Trek as afternoon TV entertainment did much to feed these childish castles in the air, which
incidentally were shared by grown-ups too. Entire generations
were drawn to the story of human beings in space, travel in
space for west and east alike hailed in a new world, a supposedly new chapter for humanity.
The second kind of rocket in our memory has no positive connotations at all. We came across it in the stories our parents
told about the war (the war to them was always the Second
World War), later on we encountered it in the cold war, whose
escalation people in Europe feared, and which could easily
bring back these rockets and their lethal charge. In our minds
the latter, fortunately, achieved their greatest effect not because
they were real but because they bore the greatest dreams and
the greatest fears at the same time.
Times have changed; they still exist, these deadly rockets, but
they seem far, far away. The wars which concerned us have
become subject matter for the department of history; space
travel too has lost some of its fascination, these days we are
preoccupied with other issues.
Today it looks as though here in the west the big dreams and
the fears too have been dispelled. Ours is a pragmatic and a
cold world where all that matters is to achieve and to hold precisely defined forms of wealth. We all want to keep our patch
under the sun, to afford our own home, our car, vacations befittingly luxurious, our trips to the restaurant, a well-stocked
beauty set. Of course, a healthy dose of rebelliousness is part
of the package, not too much mind you, plus a suitable cut of
international aesthetics reflected in art fairs (for a few only), the
uniform faces on TV, in entertainment and politics. What a tedious and unambitious vision of society, one that grants freedom
to its members and at the same time has made them dependent on their personal wealth, on that which they believe to be
their ultimate goal. We may well have become weary and complacent here in the west, driven to enjoy what we rightly acquired. But alas, it is cracking and crumbling and we are called
upon to build new perspectives.
Maybe the way creative individuals express themselves and
their surroundings is like a sourdough fermenting and rising. I
truly believe that in a world like ours, numbed and without direction, artists and their visions are more needed than ever before in our recent past. It is not space we are aiming for with
the thrust of a rocket, but the future of a globalized and networked world with all its familiar challenges.
Dialogue among different societies has always been instrumental to finding new developments in art. This is still true in our
fully networked world, because the internet will never replace
the need to meet artists in person and to study original works
from their own, individual perspective. There is nothing new
about bringing a countrys leading artists to another country
so that they can make their artistic statement there, yet time

DAVAJ! (REISSTS

MARKUS MITTRINGER

anderen fragen vorauseilt; in allen lebensbereichen; immer.

da musste erst otto kommen, jahrzehnte spter. otto muehl,
van-gogh-paraphrasen anzulegen, wollten germpelplastiken

um deren lust zu interagieren, um deren potenzial alles auszusprechen (happiness makes up in height for what it lacks
sagmeister lou reed mitten ins gesicht schreiben konnte,

p
dear muscovites,
one of our national poets towards the end of his life concluded:
he always pursued what attracted him, not without zeal, but
neglected all else. it was none other than himself, franz grillparzer, he alluded to. and to carry on the austrian tradition one
is tempted to imagine someone who had already fallen behind
because they were tired, because time was getting ahead of
them, and then realized that sooner or later the vanguard always
ran into the rear guard. someone who has lost all curiosity.
of course with all the subjects, images, objects and scraps of
words that befall us from time to time there is no lack of repetitions, but subversive fuzziness notoriously undermines the
crossing of the finishing straight. the borderline disappears gently but firmly the moment you approach it. pictures prove nothing, they trigger consequences. happiness consists in paying
for these consequences as well. behind the carefully lifted curtain there is nothing. what remains ultimately is painting, drawing, sculpturing and designing. it is usually the others who will
debate on this anyway. lamenting the status quo is no solution.
as ross bleckner said: artists shouldnt complain, some things
turn out well, others dont, sometimes they fit the times, sometimes they dont, some happen quickly, others take time. if you
dont like it, dont be an artist, go work for microsoft!
the question of who with whom? in austria is more than a curatorial one at any rateit is a question which anticipates all
others; in all walks of life; at all times. all it takes is to make a
selection, and off goes the discussion, the standard austrian
discussion, a grueling procedure of anticipating or retroactive
destruction as the case may be. judging is all too human.
so the call for austria davaj! cant be pronounced enough:
come on lets go!, get your act together!
this time your moscow is the destination for a jarring mix of
students of undetermined age. what a great elite, glorious
meets promising, young and old share a bench, illustrators
and architects go hand in hand and the latter show up confidently in the sculpturing classes, independent copiers inspire
strategically trained prompters, teachers sit on school benches
amidst their students, no teachers desk to be seen, only franz
west once upon a time thought of a desk and the subject antiquity: when franz west thinks of supporting leg and leg in motion and an old horse springs to mind it cant possibly be anything but a horny old horsea self-portrait, his interpretation
of a renaissance-figure. horny franz raised loftily next to the
uffizi in florence, awaiting the travelling admirers who happen
to come by and duly admire the erect artists ego, take pictures
of it or at least purchase a catalogue with a picture of the
almost classical figure. west meanwhile knows that this is part
of itpart of becoming famousto have your privates dangling
out along with your soul. even though he has long since moved
on to musingly seat himself in the armchair and leave the
pedestal to othersthe younger ones. naturally metaphorically
only, naturally as an installation only.
and just as naturally he designed his pedestal, the base for the
monument which has empowered itself to point the finger. he
carved it from his experience. and thus it turned out as it is,
and you realize that when you bend over the bow rail of the titanic, there is not necessarily a soft cushion like kate winslet to
offer you the perspective of being caught as you fall. wests
pedestaljust like the masteris perfidious: it stands crooked
and unstable, try to lean upon it and you will stumble, if you
50
dont you will stumble all the same. it just doesnt fit. so much
for teachers and one of wests works that got him accepted in
the vanguard.
from there he called upon another, the artist architect heidulf
gerngro and together they erected a perfectly vertical pillar of
rubbish bins: the gerngro pillar, an inconspicuously conspicuous urban piece.
you can also climb the height of creative austria by taking the
shortest route to sculpture. in a matter of minutes. in one
minute: the road to self-perception always starts with an act of
appropriation: erwin wurm has swallowed the world. this calls
for a digression: lucio fontana along with adorno, brancusi, art
basel, guggenheim and ludwig wittgenstein are among a number of others who can really get on ones nerves. because
the 80ies become the 90ies, the term career settles as a necessity across the entire spectrum, curators have long escaped
the library dungeons to reach for the light: all of the above have
claimed something undisputable, necessarily true, instantly true
and logically necessary. erwin wurm inevitably also found the
logic of modality, appropriated himself of apodictics. and he
saw that it turned out well, very well indeed. the artist who
swallowed the world finally eclosed. gone all national will for
expression from the perspective of the directly involved, put
aside all furious need to comment, overcome the compulsion
to wallow along in the misfortune of ones neighbor. all of a
sudden erwin wurm too has gained perspective, all at once he
distances himself from the events. and thus the world is open
to him, and no translator required henceforth. wurm and how
he saw the world is here for a while yet, this contemporary
moralistssurely the most disarmingworld tour is in full
swing. people around the world succumb to his conclusiveness,
assemble to form sculptures for a few minutes, they swell with
the experience to be the object of desire for a matter of moments. even porsches as of late are finding themselves, forget
about their six-pack for a short while and unperturbedly show
their crackle. Bread rolls filled with cold meat fold out stairs,
inviting citizens to visit the promised land, asparagus tips finally
target nostrils, and praised be the dog that swallows letter
boxes yet does not question daily life. erwin wurm shows us
what we saddle ourselves with, which offers we are prepared
to accept with relish. the tinkered joke has long turned into
perfectly crafted compendium, an endless tape with instructions
just in case.
in the classroom for the umpteenth time and a true frontman
moving up is impossible and graduation not part of the plan otto muehl, the scaregnome. this is what happened:
otto muehl would not have had anyone fuck him but van gogh
(ok, maybe picasso too, but just about anyone in ottos generation would have had picasso hump them.) so it had to be vincent. let us recap: first his own cousin did not return his love,
and then his only real friend turned out not to be one after all.
not heard by his relative and abandoned by paul gauguin, vincent willem van gogh, born in 1853, was suddenly left with
nothing. the road to success had decided right in front of him
to form a confusingly multi-tipped fork, and the phantom pains
in the ears were not exactly negligible. helicopters were not the
hype then so vincent concluded: there is only one way out: a
mental home! the idea of a community where free love existed
and bourgeoisie was banned had not been born. it took otto
to come along, decades later. otto muehl, to whom vincent
had probably first appeared in technicolor: through vincent
van goghlust for life (vincente minnelli, kirk douglas and anthony quinn) the vicars son from zundert has become engraved
in our collective memory the way everyone wanted to see an
artist: staggering through life and intoxicated by his work, full
of vigour and sap and passion anddoubt. a man capable of
removing his own ear. the ear supposedly cut off in a moment
reeking of drama, which in fact was only a lobe, but who cares.
vincent had been declared a saint so forget your doubts.
otto muehl seems to have been interested primarily in the sap
and vigour which to begin with he employed to overcome panel
paintings by brute force. before he was ready to apply van gogh
paraphrases sculptures made of junk had to be accumulated,
friction with the social body called austria (the world of gnomes)
had to be tested and perfected. in 1970 muehl began to develop
his social utopia, in his 120 sqm apartment on praterstrae in
vienna as an alternative form of life. his aa (action analysis) parables show the kind of instructions he gave the communards to
analyze themselves, a series of screen prints done in 1976 illustrates the set of rulesakin to illustrated house rules and
equally bourgeois in words and pictures. instead of the ten
commandments known to the world of gnomes muehl imposed twelve thereof, such as: thou shalt not be jealous. and
the master, soaked up praise and admiration. to the verge of
bursting, of megalomania. while he ostensibly resorted to portraits to unmask the great and the powerful, the representatives
of the gnome society, moshe dayan, charles de gaulle, ho chi
minh, ultimately he increasingly appears in the round of heroes
himself, armed with the fat cigars producers and big leaders
are known for. you muscovites are familiar with the end of the
commune story. what matters is: otto muehl continues to paint
and scare the gnomeswith van goghs landscapes as a background for sodomy, rape and murder.
along with master otto in the top class is manfred wakolbinger
(the order of the following nominations has no deeper sense
and neither has the length of comments attached which ought
to entail a series of hefty discussions, see who with whom? )
and with him the question: why sculptures everywhere and always; and for what purpose? and why should sculptures always be intended for eternity, seeing as sub specie aeternitatis
everything falls prey to ridicule eventually? and why shouldnt
sculptures be allowed to travel and visit all the places which
generally or even for subjective considerations only attract attention?
and who says that time is up for sculptures, that they have
missed the boat, have lost out on modernization? who says
that the sculpture after the last sculpture has already been created? so there: sculptures too can surf, roam through archives,
visit random addresses, enter places no other sculpture has
entered before. sculptures have become as mobile as what
we call society, mirroring it as ever before, getting in its way as
ever before as they turn into accusations, while ignoring it as
ever before. just because sculptures have learnt to live with
photoshop does not mean they are any less autonomous than
before.
so manfred wakolbinger always takes a few of his sculptures
along with him. say, he happens to be in rome and comes
across a couple seeking to reinforce their solemnly sealed relationships aspiration to eternity with the coliseum as a background, he deftly places a sculpture next to themand gets
an impression for himself and for us.
the sculpture in this case does not serve the purpose of pointing
out the manifest situation, the sign has not been placed here
permanently (so as to be integrated into the overall picture
sooner or later and thus forfeit its original function), but of making visible the special moment, albeit a fleeting encounter.
manfred wakolbingers formations always cry out to be used
for lying, sitting, leaning onthey are seen as compatible by
the beholder, as yielding and stable at the same time, as cantileverslike marcel breuers model b55. thus they are sculptures without hind legs, cantilever sculptures, quite remarkable
from the statics point of view. (up to the point where sculptures,
the minute they visit a ballet schoolas in havanaeven begin
to hop, take off from the ground, and remain suspended) of
course it is possible to install manfred wakolbingers sculptures
permanently in a museum, as guards for example. once you
have begun to recognize their potential, you dont have to
bring them along every time. you simply walk outside, project
a wakolbinger into the scene from memory to get things shaking.
like most sentences the minute they are uttered in zenita universe:
letters when they get bored, and only then, begin to play paintbox. they line up nicely in a row, a first, z last, starting with
white, yellow, red, green, blue and finally black. they do so in
the hope that someone will stir them up, whirl them around.
should the letters not feel like making sense, presenting the
thoughts of others, or being pressed into hexameters, they
prefer to rest in a messy pile, or go for a swim in the soup instead of sleeping in their letter case organized like color pencils.
zenita komad knows the letters and the colors and the grains
of sand. she knows about their relationship, about the coil that
ties them all to the umbilicus, about their desire to interact,
about their potential to express everything (happiness makes
up in height for what it lacks in length). she knows that pictures
bring forth pictures, words entail words, and deeds and ideas.
this much has happened so far:
monochromy has brought forth strange offspring: children, who
struck root, took space and form, who had finally had enough
of the monotony and began to have orgies. monochromy in
the prologues to this mass finally requested a plot for itself too,
performed dances of joy and havoc and mayhem. its children,
finally unleashed, began to devour each other, trigger boundless
acts of copulation, they never tired of reaping the gain of lust
and infecting their surroundings with it. us the meso-cosmonauts who had no choice but to participate.
fully and totally. because if you balk you wont see anything, if
you refuse only part you will lose everything. there is no audience, participation is called for, risk. because quite possibly
these are highly agile roots which are moving in on us from another side, from beyond the canvas, from another sky; looking
for food, for symbionts, for us. is it the history of art which
roots in these canvases or is the canvas, the sky we know no
limit after all? the road to clarifying what is behind takes us directly to the tumult, right through the thick. and there perhaps,
who knows, we find those radiating magical beings who turn
away from the expectations brought along, the prima ballerinas
who easily lift the laocoon group, relieving old heroism from the
spell of melancholyin a sphere of sensational harmony of
words, pictures and sound, where no-one fearfully weighs, noone excludes or condemns the other. one thing is for sure,

peace in zenita-city is anything but boring. (there are full-busted
pictures giving life, amongst others).
franz graf and zenita komad met at the vienna academy as
teacher and student respectivelya relationship which was
and is unthinkable for both. they both enjoy intensive life and
experience as the starting point for their works. obsession and
asceticism do not exclude each other, neither do concreteness
and abstraction or text and image. elements entered in a biography from the very start are superimposed with layers of acquired elements and yearnings, desires and strategies for their
fulfillment. franz grafs and zenita komads travel routes cross
from time to time, causing celebrations or crises, knowledge
transfer or formally heartfelt closeness. occasionally they would
travel together. the destination being as irrelevant as all other
details. both drew, captured what happened, might have happened, or never happened that way. love my dreams is not
an offer for either side, love my dreams is what they demand!
where, franz graf repeatedly asks himself, do classicism and
life meet, where is it that stylized form coincides with the wounds
inflicted by the concrete, the selected opponent? is there any
other way to get there but the obsessive? what is paranormal?
is it not true that sensuality only begins when all players stop
pretending agreement? is it possible at all to bear nature in a
non-perverted form? one thing is true at any rate: final song
first. stroke acoustic and other bodies against the grain, fill the
mental studio from time to time to empty it right away. and:
record what life has to offer, extract letters from words, reduce
lace from brussels to its underlying patterns, draw graphite on
transparent paper, love the idyll of fully comprehensive distrust,
cross reference.
the scene. a fresh start has become the daily duty. knowledge
increases rapidly and bleakly. vienna continues to grow, albeit
listlessly. news are cut for easy reading. overweight children
massively prove the norm. genes are said to be safe. merry impotence is hindered by the hope of pussy gain. conceptual
art has found security in itself. the lord still screws around with
the help of his representatives. wrthersee lake is unfairly inaccessible. experts on carinthia are centrally sedated in viennese
graves of honor. in art many have found their wormhole. restitutions are made several generations later, just in case. looking
away today secures your grandchildrens income. everyone is
flexible. being thrown together creates values. so does love
but that is complicated, difficult to calculate, still hard to get a
grip on. the city is alive. the scene full of new characters who
develop new models to spite their grim grandfathers and institutionalized overprotective mothers, forming collectives to escape envy. vienna produces wonderful blossoms, like johanna
braun, nilbar gres or tamuna sirbiladze. walking-chair are turning out circular ping-pong tables and helmut lang delights us
with beautiful objects from the hamptons.
great!
dear muscovites,
embraces, big embraces!

Manfred Wakolbingers artistic oeuvre is built on consistent and year-long scrutiny of the ratio of volume and space. Sculptures
inevitably enter into a relationship with their environment and as they are included in space create space within themselves; a fact
the artist treats in a sculpturally imminent way.

Franz West is one of the most significant protagonists of Austrian and international cultural life. With his objects at the crossroads
of fine and applied art he dismantles the hierarchy of the space between works and their beholder; emphasizing the presence he
significantly contributes towards a new concept of the artistic range of action.

Erwin Wurms oeuvre goes far beyond the traditional concept of sculpture. In his clear artistic interventions Wurm focuses on
elementary and everyday themes, he challenges the ideal of aesthetic bodies as conveyed by the media, as well as their reception
in society.

Heidulf Gerngross, one of the most unconventional protagonists of the Viennese Scene, defines architecture in a direct context
with fine arts, music and literature. Gerngross purposefully uses the analogy of the orchestra and the conductor as its dramaturge.
Amongst others, he is the founder and publisher of the ST/A/R magazine, which is dedicated to architecture, art and religion.

Franz Grafs primary artistic concept is based on a concatenation of different, often antipodal media such as drawings, photography
and installations. In his approach he uses documents, drawings and photographs from his archives as well as language and
literature. Graphical elements are carried to the extreme and used in an unconventional way. The artist himself refers to his signs
as emblematic.

Bereits in
Gnther Domenigs work is colored by an expressive, organic-sculptural interpretation of architecture. Back in the 1960ies Domenig
began to move away from the rational construction style. His own residential home called Steinhaus (eng.: stone house) reflects
his perception of architecture and his search for individual expression most consistently.

Design muss funktionieren.
Design has to function, art need not, the designer Stefan Sagmeister likes to quote the artist Donald Judd. In his seemingly
tailor-made work the designer frequently and successfully battles against the standardization of average good taste and skilfully
escapes all attempts at categorization.

Tamuna Sirbiladzes paintings are characterized by an expressivity drawn from her very own speed of painting. Her visual motifs
range from figurative depiction to abstraction. The artist uses color in a graphic way, as if to make generous sketches for future

Brigitte Kowanz focuses on the different manifestations of light. Apart from language, she uses light as a creative medium caught
in receptacles, dispersed on surfaces or forced into fixed formations. Light becomes material, continuously changing shape and
searching for new ways to depict the visible reality it turns into a metaphor.

Helmut Langs sculptural work may be considered the greatest common subset of art and life. While in his fashion designs Lang
deals with the shell and with the symbolic inherent in the surface, with the body as an apparatus of culture, his approach to sculpture
is the exact opposite. Content and context are sounded out in different ways of conveyance. Thus, Helmut Langs objects enter
our collective memory against the backdrop of a media-guided zeitgeist.

The artistic work of Otto Muehl, one of the trailblazers and at the same time the most radical and controversial representative of
Viennese Actionism ranges from conceptually structured material images and extremely gestural painting to flat-spaced graphics
where color ranges as the predominant means of expression. His work continues to bear witness to unusual power and expressivity.
