Ms.

McGovern Chapter 11 Day # 1

Lesson Plans: Algebra I Date: Thursday, May 9, 2013

Objective: (making connections between algebra and geometry) Discover how slopes and perpendicular lines are related Learn the definitions of various quadrilaterals defined by their parallel and perpendicular sides I can describe relationships and properties of the figures using the axes to identify points and write equations of lines that are parallel or perpendicular.

Activities
*Finish Chapter 10 Test from yesterday (use timer!) F2M: Class Discussion Define rectangle and parallelogram (other to know: trapezoid, right trapezoid, right triangle) Teacher draws picture based off students descriptions 11.1 Investigation WKST (Guided Practice) Go thru #1 in class Talk about parallel and perpendicular (notes below) Write line equations look at slopes Homework: Name that Polygon #1 WKST (both sides)

Notes:
Know: how to graph individual points, lines, and functions Now: graph geometric figures composed of line segments [insert F2M] Rectangle: two pairs of parallel line segments and four right angles (note slopes of its sides) Parallelogram: two pairs of parallel line segments Trapezoid: quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides (quadrilateral: four-sided figure) Right Trapezoid: trapezoid with two right angles (#1 from investigation) Right Triangle: triangle with a right angle Define: Parallel: lines in the same plane that never intersect; are always the same distance apart Perpendicular: lines that meet at a right angle (angle that measures 90)

Algebra I Lesson Plans

Additional Talking points: Any pair of parallel lines will lie in a single plan, but in space three lines each parallel to the other two might not be in the same plane. What is a plane? Use piece of paper to demonstrate. Question: Must a pair of lines either meet or be parallel? In space, no skew (never meet & not parallel) Lines on the same plane must meet/intersect or be parallel. Planes always intersect. Lines do not. Real Life Application: parallel and perpendicular streets; cooking example with cutting meat perpendicular to muscle

11.1 Investigation Guided Practice:

Goal: go through all four examples #1 as a class example #2,3,4 and leave at least 10 min at the end of class to go through together Graph #1: Graph the points, connect the line segments, and find their slopes. Review how to find slopes up on white board. Use geogebra google doc. Which two sides are parallel? Which two segments are perpendicular? 1) How do we know that two lines are parallel? a) Never intersect (how do we know that?) b) What has to be true about the equation of those lines intersect? (refer to slope on WKST) c) What do you notice? (same slope)
(arrow heads drawn on each line to show parallel)

if the lines never

*Parallel: lines in the same plane that never intersect; are always the same distance apart 2) How do we know that two lines are perpendicular? a) Intersect at a 90 angle (how do we know its a right angle?) b) What has to be true about the equation of those lines if the lines intersect at a 90 angle? (refer to slope on WKST) c) What do you notice? (slope: opposite reciprocal) i) What is a reciprocal? (1) To find the reciprocal of a number, write the number as a fraction and then invert (flip) the numerator and the denominator. Then give it the opposite sign. (a) Example: or vice versa
(b) What would be the opposite reciprocal of 2?

*Perpendicular: lines that meet at a right angle (angle that measures 90) (four right angles are
formed where perpendicular lines intersectsmall box in one angle drawn to show perpendicular) 3) Now that weve looked at parallel and perpendicularclassify the shape!
