Odysseus Odysseuss return and departure determine and affect the lives of many but especially his family. His wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus, build their lives on the withdrawal of Odysseus. Telemachus was only a mere infant at the time Odysseus left for Troy. He grew up absent of his father for Odysseus was at war for 10 years and lost at sea for another 10 years. Telemachus at first has no longer believes that his father will return but yet wishes for his presence. But now, no use, hes died a wretched death. No comforts left for usnot even if someone, somewhere, says hes coming home. The day of his return will never dawn. (Odyssey Chapter 1) Telemachus though only child of noble son of Laertes Odysseus, in the beginning Telemachus is nothing more than a child crying over his misfortune, living in the shadow of his great father, instead of fighting against the suitors and getting his mourning mother put back together. He lacks the authority and control his father has to take back his fathers estate. He doesnt hold the assertiveness of his absent father and is far from his father as a person but later changes with the help of Athena. Athena comes and talks to Telemachus and suggests he start getting rid of the suitors. She also gives the information that Odysseus, the father he thought no longer living, is indeed alive and lost at sea, trying to find a way back home. Athena gives Telemachus some encouragement to be the prince he is and he immediately starts improving his act. With Telemachuss new found courage he speaks to the suitors telling them to leave his fathers house. Telemachus then sets sail without the permission of the suitors. Throughout Telemachuss journey to find his father he grows more like him and more like the man he was born to be. He more self assured and has an active mind but fails to reach the skill level of his father, noble son of Laertes. He makes a rather large mistake changing the plans for defeating the

suitors; although his father made his fair share of mistakes he is much more careful than Telemachus. Telemachus also lacks the arrogant, boastful manner of his father. Though Telemachus preservers and is determine he is never quite up to the level of his father. Telemachus though does show great growth and is more like his father in ways of sensitivity and socialization, giving hope that he may be on his way to being like his father. Without the journey of finding his lost father he would have been the same man he was in the beginning.
