SUMMARY

A place where visitors can Learn. Share. Grow. ( Psych Central, 1995) The projects main objective is to allow visitors to discuss and distribute their content in order to participate in the experience of cultural heritage (Christopher Hutchison, Unknown) and more importantly find beauty within themselves. Everybody has beauty within themselves, and if you find this and accept this, then you will be happy regardless of external attributes (Russell Brand, Unknown)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
About the client: Psych Central and People who seek, and equally would like to give their
own alternative view of what is beautiful. People, who suffer from BDD, youth who are insecure, mature visitors who wish to convey some of their cultural wisdom, and people who would like to learn more about alternative cultures. Psych Central Website: psychcentral.com

Imogen Donald K1062001 The Worldwide View Of Beauty [2013]

Culture and Heritage Informatics CI3130

Psych Central is the Internets largest and oldest independent mental health social network. It
is run by mental health specialists, who give trustworthy and dependable information. Since 1995 it has had over 200 support groups. To many, it is considered todays modern voice for mental health information and support. It has the biggest online reach and recognition of any mental health network online today, touching the lives of over 3 million people around the world every month.

About the Client: Background

Psych Central is affiliated with the Psych Central Community Connection, a 501(c)3 public charity that provides small grants to individuals in need, who are members of the Psych Central Community.

About the Client: The activities

It is unfailingly rated as one of the top mental health resources online today. Its frequently preserved by Dr. Grohol and a staff of contributing editors, and is one of the Internets best knowledge sources for mental health information, as well as offering explained guides to the most helpful newsgroups, websites, and mailing lists online today in mental health, social work, psychology, and psychiatry. The Psych Central Network contains lots of topic-oriented blogs, and two online communities.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a type of mental illness, where the affected
person is troubled with body image, exhibited as unwarranted anxiety about and preoccupation with an observed defect of their physical features.

It occurs with men and women, and occasionally in children and older adults. About 76% of parents think their child is either over conceited or simply lying about their condition. Approximately one to

Imogen Donald K1062001 The Worldwide View Of Beauty [2013]

Culture and Heritage Informatics CI3130

two percent of the world's population meets the diagnostic criteria for body dysmorphic disorder. (Psychological Medicine, 1969) The three most common areas of which those suffering from BDD will feel critical have to do with the face: the skin, the hair, and the nose.

Learn. Share. Grow.

There are a huge segment of people who could benefit greatly from an interactive museum like the one I shall be creating, as part of their psych treatment. Psych Centrals slogan is Learn. Share. Grow. People will learn about other cultures and realise that they are beautiful. They will share their photograph, showing the world their beauty and thus grow as a person.

To meet its goals, Psych Central invites proposals that focus on teaching, sharing experiences and helping a person grow. BDD is not a well-known disease. It is characterized by a significant dissatisfaction with ones appearance, particularly with perceived flaws. Studying other cultures and their perceptions on beauty could have positive effect of people suffering from BDD. Currently people with BDD often resort to cosmetic surgery to address mental health problems. I shall create this interactive museum in an effort to attract those who seek, and equally would like to give their own alternative view of what is beautiful

About The Worldwide View of Beauty database

The Worldwide View of Beauty is a web-based cultural database, which looks at different countries around the world and their view of what is beautiful. The main objectives will be to teach and involve the visitors, increasing their knowledge on other parts of the world. Participatory activities will be used to make visitors feel more involved in the creating of the website. The project described in this document has been undertaken to teach and to enable others to impart their opinions with the rest of the world on their views of what defines true beauty. This interactive web-based site will use heritage and social media to enable interest in other cultures and allow visitors to gain knowledge of alternative

Culture and Heritage Informatics CI3130

cultures, as well as, allow them to leave the database feeling that they themselves are beautiful. All visitors will be invited to plot where they are from on a Google map, and submit their own photograph to add to the online collection, giving them the sense that they have now become a part of the evergrowing database of beautiful people.

Intellectual Issues
Collecting User Generated Contents
One of the main aims of this project was to enable a feature that allowed outside users to add their own content to the database. This being said, settings had to be fine-tuned to constrain the level at which users could publish onto the database.

Modifying Contents
As a safety precaution, it was essential that any modifications of the content would require both the curators and the authors consents. The only changes which will be allowed, to be made, without any restrictions follow; Adding personalised images to the database collection Any Grammar based or spelling mistakes Altering the work in order to improve the quality of the information collected Eliminating any content that may lead to unethical behaviour or activity

Unacceptable Behaviour
Any unethical behaviour, or mistreatment of the database, will be reported, and the user posting abusive content will be sent a banning notice and immediately prevented from accessing the database forthwith.

Content from the Internet

The Worldwide View of Beauty database Analysis

As the overseer and the publisher of The Worldwide View of Beauty website, I will ensure that users wishing to add to the website, will need to read and accept a copyrights and publishing agreement, whereby all the conditions are acknowledged and approved by both parties (the publisher and the author), so as to certify that the authors permissions are absolute before any uploading/publishing. As this project has been primarily designed for Psych Central Community Connection (PCCC) both the PCCC and I (the overseer) are the main partners in The Worldwide View of Beauty database. Notably,

Imogen Donald K1062001 The Worldwide View Of Beauty [2013]

Culture and Heritage Informatics CI3130

there are additional sponsors, such as The BDD Foundation, who also have a specified level of control in terms of content.

Figure 1 (appendix) shows the overall stakeholder list.

Problems Faced
Collecting the data about Beauty from the various cultures wasnt as difficult as expected. However, combining the BDD Aspect to the database, proved challenging. The disorder itself acted as a huge barrier when it came to gathering real life experiences. Most sufferers of BDD find it very hard to be looked at/watched, let alone filmed. So unsurprisingly, the aspect of recording them, and then publishing the video to enable the whole world to watch, is a terrifying prospect.

This being said, the lack of material available and almost non-existent interviews, motivated me more and just gave me an additionally reason of why this database should be created. As previously mentioned, an objective of this database is to act as a form of therapy for those who suffer from BDD. By watching fellow BDD suffers overcome their fear and record themselves and their feelings, this could help encourage other users to do the same.

Aims and Objectives

The Worldwide View of Beauty database aims at introducing the first centralised, web based medium for integrating, sharing with the use of and social media to enable interest in other cultures and allow visitors to gain knowledge of alternative cultures. With the aim of enabling users to leave the database feeling that they themselves are beautiful. This will all be accomplished with the help and support of the Psych Central Community Connection (PCCC) and The BDD Foundation. The main objectives of this project are;

Help people of all ages & people suffering from BDD learn about other cultures and their perceptions of what defines true beauty

Allow users to create a montage, share their own opinions of what defines true beauty, and gain the feeling of being connect to something big and ever-growing

Culture and Heritage Informatics CI3130

Help users find beauty within themselves Increase/Enhance International Awareness of BDD by publishing findings from interviews, and documentaries (after gaining necessary consent)

Intellectual Property and Natural/Personal Property based rights

Human rights in the United Kingdom are set out in common law, with its strongest roots being in the English Bill of Rights 1689, as well as the European legislation. In The Worldwide View of Beauty database, all the authors have a right to tell their stories freely only if desired by these authors. This is essential, particularly in this interactive online database, where authors are publicizing personal content relating to their past/present experiences.

Fair use concerns

In copyright law, there is a concept of fair use, also known as; free use, fair dealing, or fair practice. Fair use sets out certain actions that may be carried out, but would not normally be regarded as an infringement of the work. (The UK Copyright Service, 2004) Reason for using the works If money is to be made using the owners ideas, of something that is copyrighted, without paying the owners, then such a case is considered against fair usage. Contrasting with the use of freely obtainable works, which can be used and shared to others, without the need for payment. Quality and Quantity of works used Always try to maintain the highest quality possible, especially with regards to images and video recordings submitted to be published.

The Worldwide View of Beauty database Intellectual Property, Fair Use Considerations
Fair Use Consideration: The Use of Images Copyright restrictions can vary from image to image. In relation to the previously described fair use protocol, this database is not for commercial purposes, but for academic purposes. Therefore, any images that are uploaded to the web server by DuraSpace, also encompasses the automatic generation of thumbnails which are smaller and thus a lower resolution than the original images, yet still conforming to the fair use conditions.

Fair Use Consideration: Streaming Audio and Video Files It is important to ensure that the content that is uploaded by users does not violate the YouTube. A strong emphasis was put on the protection of audio and videos files that were uploaded on the web server. QuickTime Player was embedded into my database and used to display the already published videos.

Functional Requirements
The Functional Requirements are provided in the appendix as figure 3

Non-Functional Requirements
Robustness Aspects With regards to the reliability and robustness of the application used to create the database, the open sourced platform is more than suited for the creative ideas I brought to life.

Performance Aspects In relation to performance of The Worldwide View of Beauty database prototype, since the prototype is not hosted remotely, the uploading and downloading of contents is carried out much quicker than if the content were being hosted remotely.

Security Aspects As mentioned earlier in the Intellectual Property section of this report, any users eager to contribute to The Worldwide View of Beauty database are required to fill in an electronic publishing and copyrights agreement form.

Implementation Based Limitations/Constraints The main implementation constraint involved with DuraSpace, was the displaying of images and audio files within the DuraSpace webpages. The inability to customise the layouts, video and audio files to my specific designs, meant that substitute resolutions had to be pondered.

Human Computer Interface (HCI)/ Usability Aspects In order for The Worldwide View of Beauty database to relate to the vast age range of users, and sufferers of BDD, particular considerations were taken into account when designing to look of the website. The clean, plain and neat characteristics, which sit comfortably with all ages has been expressed in the background, layout and text. Also an introduction about The Worldwide View of Beauty database, Psych Central, BDD and a number of countries with their cultural definitions of beauty has been provided, so as to share the knowledge with the rest of the world.

Project Evaluation and Future Recommendations

The use of DuraSpace as a database management system for The Worldwide View of Beauty database, has allowed me to evaluate the application. Based on the performance of the completed and fully functional database, it can said that I successfully achieved my main objectives which were planned ahead of creation. TheQuickTime player worked well within the database, however the browser type affected the streaming process. It was discovered that the videos streamed best in Google Chrome, opposed to Firefox.

The Worldwide View of Beauty database unfortunately didnt have the chance to gather a substantial amount of public interest before a DuraSpace admin gave me notice that within 24 hours they would be removing my database.

The following are the future recommendations for The Worldwide View of Beauty database. Find an alternative platform and continue to develop The Worldwide View of Beauty database as a live project, with the Psych Central Community Connection (PCCC) and The BDD Foundation as key stakeholders.

Research into other means of sharing the gathered contents e.g. personal accounts, interviews and opinions on other web pages.

Encourage more users from alternative cultural backgrounds to participate or contribute more towards The Worldwide View of Beauty database.

Further research with regards to the supporting institutes and forums for suffers of BDD.
