From the PRESIDENT

Dear Member, Check out the two new programs about Petaluma on June 23 at 11 pm, and June 24 at 9:30 am. Producer Andrew Martin has been working on his Petaluma Memories series for several years and has been kind enough to share it with KRCB for airing. These two episodes, on the Leghorns and on Helen Putnam give the viewer a peek at the last 60 years of that citys history. As always, KRCB is pleased to work with independent producers who add richness and diversity to our schedule. When it makes sense, we will also work with the producer to seek out national distribution.

KRCB in the Community

Tested and ready to GO!
KRCB recently completed the installation of a new emergency backup power generation system. The system, which is designed to keep the station on the air in the event of a loss of electrical utility power, was funded by a FEMA grant administered by PBS. The generator project is part of FEMAs delivery system for Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS) messages to PBS for distribution throughout the United States via existing public television infrastructure. PBSs comprehensive geographical footprint ensures maximum nationwide distribution of CMAS messages. Cell phone carrier companies who choose to participate can install over-the-air reception equipment at their cell sites for delivery of the CMAS message to their subscribers. By providing a diverse path for distributing the CMAS messages, PBS and the member stations help to keep our communities safer.

As the topic of same-sex marriage has moved centerstage over the past eight years, so too have the lives of Inlaws & Outlaws subjects. Filmmaker and storyteller Drew Emery carries the stories to the present in an engaging companion to the feature. Pictured Jane Abbott Lighty, left, and Pete-e Petersen recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.

Simmondspoet, musician, filmmaker, writeris the editor of Ota Benga Under My Mothers Roof, a collection of narrative poems by Carrie Allen McCray. Ota Benga, a strong yet gentle man from the deep Congo forest, was brought to America in 1904 to be exhibited in the St. Louis Fair and then in 1906 at the Museum of Natural History. Finally, he was exhibited in a cage with

an ape at the Bronx Zoo. On this program, you will hear about Ota Bengas life and how he came to live with the poets family in Lynchburg, Virginia. You will hear not just the powerful poetry of Carrie Allen McCray, but songs composed and sung by Kevin Simmonds, and more. The culmination of many trips to Brazil, the poems in Sugar Zone are works of the jungle, the Amazon and more. Celebrating Fathers Day

Fatherloss
Sunday, June 16 at 11 pm Inspired by the book FatherLoss: How Sons of All Ages Come to Terms with the Deaths of Their Dads by Neil Chethik, this poignant new special explores the unique grief sons face when they lose their fathers. Host Dave Shuffett makes a personal journey of discovery after the death of his father in 2007, sharing his struggles in the wake of the loss. In addition to the author Neil Chethik, he also interviews several other men about father-loss, including Pulitzer Prizewinning cartoonist Joel Pett, Lexington Family Magazine editor John Lynch and others, each of whom tell their personal stories of dealing with the loss of their father. Setting the tone for the program is a quote from General Douglas MacArthur who carried his fathers photo in his wallet for 50 years: My whole world changed that night, never have I been able to heal the wound in my heart.

Crimebuster: A Sons Search for His Father

Thursday, June 20 at 8 pm Crimebuster: A Sons Search for His Father follows photojournalist Lou Dematteis as he searches for the story of his late father, the influential Italian American crime fighter and jurist Louis B. Dematteis, and examines their rocky personal relationship. District Attorney and Judge Louis B. Dematteis fought organized crime in northern California in the 1940s and 50s and gave Sandra Day OConnor (interviewed in the film) her first job as a lawyer when no one was hiring women. The film moves from Italy and Ellis Island to California and the San Francisco Bay Area with its story of immigrants, family, justice and healing.

In May, KRCB Radio FM 91 produced a successful on-air fundraising drive and in June, KRCB Television 22 invites viewer support. All these activities keep KRCB healthy and able to provide the wonderful programs viewers and listeners have come to expect. After all, KRCB is a partnership that relies on your support so we can do what we do bestprovide an independent television and radio alternative with programming that makes a difference. We never forget the trust you place in KRCB and intend to keep working to earn that trust every day.

VOLUNTEER of the month

This spring KRCB began work on our first Health Connections half-hour TV program and, fortunately for us, Taylor Kubota was back in town looking for an internship in broadcast journalism. A Sonoma County native, Taylor attended the University of San Diego for her undergraduate work in anthropology and healthcare studies. After graduating Taylor knew she wanted to work in the field of healthcare but not as a practicing professional. She found out about a science journalism program at New York University and packed her bags for the East Coastan educational experience in and of itself. As a graduate student Taylor worked on a student-run website for health issues, wrote articles (she was an intern at Womens Health magazine and Popular Health), and learned how to make videos. By chance she had run into Danielle Venton, our science reporter who produces audio reports for airing on Radio 91 FM as well as for the KRCB.org website, and found out that there might be an opportunity here for her to apply her knowledge and skills for several causes that she believes in: healthy individuals, healthy communities and public media! Over the past two months Taylor has helped with video shoots and the editing of a segment featuring local organizations that coordinate services for displaced teens and young adults as part of our Health Connections: Community! program. When she isnt at KRCB she does freelance work in the field of science journalism and it looks to us like she has a productive future ahead of her and we have a brighter future here in Sonoma County because of young people like Taylor. A hearty and healthy thank you goes out to you, Taylor, for supporting KRCB and our community! If you are interested in volunteering at KRCB, please contact Cheryl Scholar at 707.584.2005.
