May 2013

Presidents Message
Now that May is here its time, once again, for the Friends 51st Annual Art Fair to be held Saturday, May 4 thru Sunday, May 5 at the Sierra Madre Memorial Park. This is one of three major fundraisers that the Friends hold during the year to benefit the programs and services of our wonderful Library! This year, we will have many exceptional artists selling their art work thanks to the tireless efforts of our Exhibits Committee: David Darbyshire, Nancy Doyle, Alison SnowWesley, Peggy Matchin, Lorie Oliver and Sharon Murphy. Janet Emery and Susan Gallagher, co-chairs of this years event, and their committee are also busy preparing for the Art Fair and a Silent Auction. All art work for the Silent Auction is being donated by many of the participating artists. This years Featured Artist is glass blower David Van Noppen. His dichroic vases can be seen on all posters, post cards, flyers and t-shirts and tote bags. The Food Court will provide a variety of food and live music will be featured throughout the park. A creative craft project for children will be offered, so plan on bringing your friends to enjoy the festivities and of course help our Library. As we all face tight budgets, in our homes, businesses and our community, let us remember our Library. The Library Board of Trustees is busy working on the Strategic Planning Committee for the Library. This Strategic Plan is a tool for laying out the Librarys goals and objectives for the next three years. You will be hearing the results of this committees work in the coming months. Members of the Friends are invited to attend the Friends annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, June 19. Volunteers will also be recognized at this time and officers for the 2013-2014 year will be installed. Look for more information in the June Newsletter. See you at the Art Fair! Darlene Traxler

The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Passage of Power, by Robert A. Caro

Like some latter-day Edward Gibbon chronicling not the Roman Empire but the life of Lyndon Johnson, Robert A. Caro has devoted decades of his life to his multi-volume biography. This is book four of the series. Caro takes us behind the scenes to witness Johnsons failure to secure the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination. LBJ suffers through three years of abject humiliation, after trading his Senate majority leaders omnipotence for the powerlessness of the vice presidency in a JFK administration that only wanted him on the ticket to win Southern votes. JFKs assassination catapults LBJ into the presidency. As the nation grieves, Johnson swiftly steps into his new role, deploying his formidable legislative skills to launch the Great Society and lay the groundwork for Civil Rights. LBJs career trajectory, his blood feud with Bobby Kennedy and his complicated and enigmatic personality are all vividly rendered in lucid, compelling prose. Caro intended this book to conclude his LBJ saga, but decided that he needed a fifth and final volume to cover the fateful Vietnam years. Caro is now 77. May he live long enough to finish it.
