Second Mate of a foreign-going ship: (Officer in charge of navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more OIC NW)

) Annexure to N.T. Branch/Exam Circular No.1 of 2011 Assessment of Sea service performed in Non-trading vessels operating in foreign/Indian coastal waters towards 2nd Mate certification:
Stream of Entry -- B.Sc. Nautical degree (Approved by DGS) B.Sc. Polyvalent course (Approved by DGS) M.S. Notice 18 of 2008 3 Year B.Sc. Maritime Science (polyvalent) degree course 18 months (12 months on deck + 6 months in E/R) (includes on board training with TAR book) Minimum of 9 months must be performed on trading vessels1 which shall include six months of supervised bridge watch keeping duties. DGS-IGNOU/IMU Diploma in Nautical science M.S. Notice 16 of 2007 One year Pre-sea deck cadet course under DGS-IGNOU/IMU 18 months (under Structured Ship board training programme & TRB) Science/ Engg. graduate entry scheme M.S. Notice 21 of 2008 Six months presea training approved by DGS 15 months (under Structured Ship board training programme & TRB) Minimum of 7.5 months must be performed on trading vessels1 which shall include six months of supervised bridge watch keeping duties Three/six months pre-sea deck cadet course Other Deck cadets Ratings (10+2 PCM) M.S. Pre-Sea requirement

Approved Sea-going service required for 2nd Mate FG examination

3 Year B.Sc. Nautical Science degree course / 4 year B.Sc. Nautical Technology degree course 12 months (includes on board training with TRB)

Conditions to be met if the sea-going service includes Non-trading ships

Minimum of 6 months must be performed on trading vessels1 with supervised bridge watch keeping duties

Minimum of 9 months must be performed on trading vessels1 which shall include six months of supervised bridge watch keeping duties

* Note: Ratings who have joined the sea service with out pre-sea training course for GP ratings, has to complete the NWKO (NCV) course and examination prior second mate (FG) examination. 1 Note: Term Trading vessels in this table includes foreign going trading ships and coastal trading ships of 500 GT and above when engaged on voyages 500 miles or more only.
