Hurons own rides the Gatekeeper

By Todd Gardner At Cedar Points Media Day on Thursday, while waiting to take my first ride on The Gatekeeper, Cedar Points newest attraction, I felt the anticipation and excitement building. That anticipation was prolonged as we were told a rider needed to get on before us. That rider was Matt Ouimet, President and CEO of Cedar Point. My companion joked to Ouimet that he was prolonging her nervousness. He assured her she would love the ride and that it is one of the smoothest rides he has ever been on. When we had our turn riding The Gatekeeper, that was the word that ran through my mind--smooth. Cedar Point wants to focus The Gatekeeper as a ride for the family, something I believe they have accomplished. The Gatekeeper is simply a fun ride. The smooth transitions make this coaster one that can reach a broader audience. The thrill of riding a big coaster is there without the feel of being whipped around that you can experience on other coasters. To make The Gatekeeper a reality, Cedar Point again teamed up with long-time

The Gatekeeper is a wing roller coaster, which means the riders are set off to each side of the track instead of above or below it. This gives the rider the unique feeling of flying. It has the longest track length (4,164 feet), tallest drop (164 feet) and most inversions (six) of any wing roller coaster in the world, at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour. Something else that Cedar Point wanted to accomplish with the Gatekeeper was opening up views of Lake Erie. By placing the ride along the coastline, it was possible to make new sight-lines of the lake. This greatly improves the whole park and takes advantage of the Lake Erie shoreline location. The front entrance to the park was totally redesigned to accommodate the new coaster. It truly is exciting to walk up to the front gates of the park with The Gatekeeper soaring over your head. For the past 15 years Cedar Point has been voted the best amusement park The Beach Band is an all-new midway brass band that will stroll the park and play an eclectic collection of band tunes. Frontier Trail has been inhabited with a band of town folk that will interact and entertain all those who stroll through their neck of the woods. Frontier Merchant opens in Frontiertown, a re-themed cabin on the trail that features handcrafted wood items. With the addition of GateKeeper, Cedar Points new main gate has undergone major renovations and uses cameras, rather than turnstiles. Guests can save $10 by buying single-day adult tickets online. From May 17-19, ALL students in kindergarten through college may purchase a one-day ticket for $39.99. From May 17-19, all Season and Platinum Passholders can purchase a Bring-a-Friend ticket for $27.50 and enjoy discounted rates at Hotel Breakers, Sandcastle Suites and Breakers Express. From May 25-27, all active, retired or honorably-discharged members of the United States Armed Forces can receive one free regular admission ticket to Cedar Point with valid ID. Additional tickets may be purchased for spouse and children at the normal military discount price of $39.99.

New at Cedar Point for 2013

Dinosaurs Alive!, an island inhabited by lifelike prehistoric creatures, is back for a second year with a newly-hatched exhibit featuring dinosaurs so cute and tiny, youll want to take them home with you. Fast Lane has returned along with the new Fast Lane Plus, which includes unlimited rides on GateKeeper and Top Thrill Dragster as well as more than 20 other attractions. On Broadway in the Aldrich Theatre is an all new Broadway revue show beginning June 8, featuring show-stopping musical moments from the past and present.

For Jones, having had fond memories of these locations as a child helped him decide what to build. We are extremely appreciative of what he did, stated Mr. Brian Croucher, Huron Parks & Recreation. The old buildings were falling apart and had become a safety hazard. Zach asked about size and our needs then ran with it. He created a design that we will hopefully pattern additional buildings off of in the future. Having received the highest recognition in Scouting and about to graduate from High School in a few short weeks, all four young gentlemen have a plan. Wechter is off to Bowling Green State University to study Business. Sams will be attending The Ohio State University to study Political Science. Grant and Jones will be heading south to the University of Cincinnati. Grant is anxious to earn his degree in Information Systems while Jones is excited to begin his studies in Mechanical Engineering. With the self reliance and leadership skills they have learned over the years they will certainly do well for themselves and be quite successful in life.

Connor Wechter, Zach Jones, Will Sams and Chris Grant of Boy Scout Troup 31 all received their Eagle Scout Award on Sunday, May 5th, 2013.

sion at International Automotive Components, the City will undertake a widening of Rye Beach Road. The project will create turn lanes for both north- and south-bound traffic making a left turn onto Route 2. The City has received two grants, totaling approximately $400,000, from the Ohio Department of Development and the Ohio Department of Transportation for Jobs and Commerce Economic Development program. The City will cover the balance of the $599,650 estimated for the project. The Rye Beach Road project is scheduled to begin in mid-May and will be completed by the end of September. Traffic will be maintained at all times during construction. Jim Campbell Boulevard- Beginning in early July, Jim Campbell Boulevard will be resurfaced. Curbs and sidewalks will be replaced as well. The total cost of the Jim Campbell Boulevard project is $350,000, $275,000 of which will be paid with grant money the City received. Firelands Electric Trail- Plans to pave the trail that runs parallel with Route 6 from the base of the footbridge on Jim Campbell Boulevard to Woodlands Intermediate School have been in the works for many years. The City received a grant from the state of Ohio which was to cover $90,000 of the $186,000 project. Once plans were beginning to be set into motion, the state changed their minimum qualifications for the

Williams/Center/Taylor streets- Work has been underway on Williams, Center, and Taylor streets for few months. The water mains have already been put in place on all three streets, and new concrete curbs have been poured on Williams Street. From this week through May 24, the existing roadway at Williams and Center streets will be demolished and the surface will be prepared for the new road. Paving of Williams and Center streets is scheduled to begin the week of May 27. The project, which will also require road striping and site cleanup, will be completed by June 14. Fabens Park- Much-needed improvements to the restrooms at Fabens Park have been completed. These improvements included painting and upgraded plumbing, lighting, and doors. In addition, new partitions for the restrooms will be added this week. The concession stand has been updated also. The final course of asphalt will be laid on the parking lot within the next few weeks, and the striping will be completed thereafter. In phase 2 of the Fabens project, lighting will be added in the parking lot. This is scheduled to be completed sometime in June. Next year, improvements to the Adams Street entrance to the park will be completed. Rye Beach Road- To ease congestion in the Rye Beach Road/Route 2 area that is associated with an expan-

width of the path which drove the total project cost up to $400,000. The City has decided to go ahead as originally planned and forego the grant from the state. This project will commence around the same time as the re-surfacing of Jim Campbell. 508 Main Street- A few months ago, the City purchased this abandoned property. Asbestos abatement is nearly complete. Once finished, the structures on the property will be ready for demolition and the site ready for re-development.

Accessing the minutes can be done by a specific date, a range of dates or the type of meeting. The OCR allows a user to search all the minutes for a given word or phrase. For example, if someone wanted to know if the school has ever hired anyone named Smith, Smith can be entered and the search engine will locate all the Board minutes where the name Smith appears. Bike Ride for Stein

Bob Langenfelder is passionate about bike riding, and last year he also became passionate about Stein Hospice. His mother Donna was a patient, and among other things, Stein helped Donna achieve her final wish of dying at home. Now Bob is bringing those two passions together. The First Annual Stein Hospice Memorial Ride will be held Sunday, June 9 at EHOVE Career Center, where Bob is employed as a general maintenance supervisor. Cyclists will have the choice of 3 routes - 12, 25 or 45 miles - followed by lunch. Bob is making the bike ride event a family affair. Bob, along with his wife Laura and daughter Brittany will be cycling, while his father Bob and son Josh grill

hot dogs and prepare lunch. Sisters Chris, Debbie and Connie and brother Duane are also helping out, and his brother-inlaws business, Southern Title, is one of the event sponsors. Here are the details: Cost is $25, $30 day of the ride. Register by May 31 to be guaranteed a T-Shirt. The 45-mile ride begins at 8 a.m., the 25- and 12-mile rides at 9 a.m. All cyclists must wear a helmet and have a signed waiver. Consider riding in memory of a cherished loved one who is no longer living. For a registration form, or to register online visit www.steinhospice.org or call 800-625-5269.
