REEL REVIEWS

Autumn is a great season to learn how to paint and draw. Kids are back at school, the weather is brilliant and Rosemary Randells home is bustling with activity, new ideas and humour as she welcomes both new and former students back to her Kanata Lakes studio. Randell had a great summer working on her next series of paintings. She travelled to Ireland, where she spent an afternoon in a Cork jail; Scotland, where she caught up with the locals; and in Amsterdam stood beside her hero, Rembrandt. Randells enthusiasm for her love of drawing and painting, is always shared with the students in her many classes. Drawing and painting on a crisp fall afternoon or evening with new friends and neighbours can be relaxing, fun and a new learning experience. Creating a work of a favourite holiday spot or cottage can keep you painting happily for hours, and can help relieve the stress of a hard day at work, (or get you out of the stress of being at home or work), along with the herbal teas and relaxing music. New is Watercolour IV flowers. Randell has grown the botanical beauties, and has captured their bold colours in watercolours that her students will use to paint their own iris,

There are few filmmakers whose films I can usually guarantee I will like. Even with my favourite directors, there are times Im left disappointed. However, the Coen brothers are a seemingly unstoppable team that rarely leave me jilted out of $10. They have been honoured w i t h A c a d e m y Awa r d s numerous times and with good reason. They most recently won three Oscars for Best Screenplay, Director, and Motion Picture for last years No Country for Old Men. Their latest flick is much more fun and light, but still has the Coen charm. Burn After Reading is a hilarious farce featuring some megastars.

KATIE BRADFORD When two gym employees (Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand) find a disk containing the memoirs of a former CIA employee, they believe they have stumbled upon the mother load (and their meal ticket). When they attempt to blackmail the agent Osborne Cox (John Malkovich), it sends him over the edge.

BURNING HIT, FROM PAGE 27

This happens to be the same week that his wife (Tilda Swinton) has decided to leave him for her lover, U.S. Marshall Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney). The story becomes more and more complicated, shocking and (most importantly) hilarious as the characters blunder along. Many around me kept saying What? as if they were missing something, as if this plot was more sophisticated than it let on. Perhaps, but Im more inclined to think that we are meant to feel like nothing happening in front of us makes sense, because it doesnt. Even the characters have no idea what theyre doing, or what is going on.

Why should a CIA agents memoir warrant a reward of $50,000? This ridiculous plot line creates a zany farce with a dark streak. While the film gives its all-star cast a chance to let their hair down and goof off, it does also have an extremely pronounced amount of violence. Most of this violence will seem unnecessary, unwarranted and unexplained, but this is the point. This flick is classic Coen black comedy. Everyday people get mixed up with things so far above their heads that they end up losing them. Without the amazing acting talent, however, the film would have lost a lot of viewers. Some people even walked out of the theatre. Surprisingly, I thought, since anyone whos even seen a preview of a Coen Bros film should

know that it requires a great deal of patience and suspension of disbelief. Look more closely. Look at how Pitts character is frozen in adolescence, look at McDormands sad eyes, longing to be different, look at Malkovich and his unbridled rage. Think about these characters not merely as players in this comedy, but as much more complex and tragic characters that make this film more than a laugh, but an example of the superior acting and filmmaking of Hollywood elite. These small idiosyncrasies are the reason why. This is the source of the films random violence and confusion. They act on emotion and impulse, rather than logic. The message? This can never end well, but it will end hilariously.

Relax. Its Done.
