Structure of the RCSI Membership Examination in OPHTHALMOLOGY

The MRCSI (Ophthalmology) is an internationally recognised examination that assesses the candidates competence in clinical ophthalmology and the relevant basic sciences. It focuses on the assessment of the key components of clinical competence: knowledge, clinical skills, communication, clinical reasoning ability and professionalism. Candidates are required to demonstrate competence in all of these areas to achieve success in the examinations. The MRCSI examination is aimed at trainees in their first three years of ophthalmic training, known in Ireland as Basic Specialist Training. The standard of the MRCSI examination is commensurate with the degree of competence in clinical ophthalmology and relevant basic sciences required to perform the duties of a junior registrar/specialist registrar. Therefore, to pass this examination, candidates will need to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and clinical skill that enables them to work with a degree of clinical independence in all areas of ophthalmology but under the supervision of a senior clinician or Consultant Ophthalmologist. The RCSI Membership Examination in Ophthalmology is a collegiate exam, which consists of two parts: MRCSI Part 1 and MRCSI Part 2. These are structured as follows: MRCSI Part 1: This is a written exam which assesses candidates knowledge of applied basic science and theoretical optics.

MRCSI Part 2 (Written): This is a written exam which assesses candidates knowledge of clinical ophthalmology, clinical optics and refraction, and ophthalmic pathology. This is held on a separate date to the Part 2 Clinical examination and must be passed before progressing to the clinical examination. MRCSI Part 2 (Clinical): This clinical exam assesses clinical ophthalmology, clinical optics and refraction, and ophthalmic pathology.
