Fabulous Frocks
Jane Eastoe and Sarah Gristwood
The book to fire up any fashionista’s imagination!
No item of clothing has endured for longer than the dress. Yet the last century
alone has seen the most radical changes of style—hemlines swinging from ankle
to thigh, outlines alternating between the body-hugging and the bell—and our
fascination with the frock has not gone away. From Gres’ draping to Dior’s
New Look, from Mary Quant’s mini to Hussein Chalayan’s mechanical mar-
vels, this book looks at the dress in 20th-century fashion. Thematic chapters—
Changes, Feminine, Sex, Must-Haves, Fantasy, Classical, and Art—set out the
inspirations and implications for each new change alongside the stunning pho-
tography. It has been more than 80 years since Coco Chanel invented the lit-
tle black dress, but most women still have one in their wardrobes today. It’s
been decades since women discovered trousers and separates, but many women
dream of wearing a glorious, glamorous gown at least once, whether it’s on a
Hollywood red carpet or on her wedding day. Jane Eastoe trained in fashion
design, then moved to the fashion business press, for whom she regularly cov-
ered the international collections and interviewed designers from Jean-Paul
Gaultier to John Galliano. She is the author of Hedgerow and Wildlife and Wild
Food. Sarah Gristwood is the author of Arbella, Bird of Paradise, Perdita, and
Elizabeth and Leicester.

A close confidante presents the icon of haute couture in her own words, in this key source
for Chanel biographers and documentary filmmakers.
“Morand was a citizen of the world, with a sharp eye and a neat turn of phrase.”
—The Tablet
“Morand successfully combined being a bestselling author and an important repre-
sentative of the French government.” —The Modern Language Review
Coco Chanel invited Paul Morand to visit her in St. Moritz at the end of World War II
when he was given the opportunity to write her memoirs. His notes of their conversations
were put away in a drawer and only came to light one year after Chanel’s death. Through
Morand’s transcription of their conversations, Chanel tells us about her friendship with
Misia Sert, the men in her life—Boy Capel, the Duke of Westminster, artists such as Di-
aghilev—her philosophy of fashion, and the story behind the legendary No. 5 perfume.
The memories of Chanel told in her own words provide vivid sketches and portray the
strength of Coco’s character, leaving us with an extraordinary insight into Chanel the woman,
and the woman who created Chanel. Paul Morand (1888–1976) was a diplomat, novel-
ist, poet, traveler, and socialite. He is the author of Hecate and Her Dogs and Venices.

Cristiano Ronaldo
The True Story of the Greatest Footballer on Earth
Tom Oldfield
Few players have embarked on the type of journey that Ronaldo has taken in his short but
spectacular career—this story lifts the lid on the colorful life of one of the most exciting soc-
cer players of his generation.
Already a star at the youth level on his home island of Madeira and earning a big move to Sport-
ing Lisbon at just 12, Cristiano Ronaldo left a small town for a big city and was forced to adapt
to a completely different life, miles away from his family. His spirit and natural flair took him
into the Sporting first team, attracting the interest of Manchester United, who recruited him in
the summer of 2003. This is the story of a player who attracted praise and criticism alike from
soccer fans of all stripes yet won over United fans with his array of tricks, playing an important
part in both the 2004 FA Cup Final win and the 2006 Carling Cup triumph and inspiring Por-
tugal to a place in the final of Euro 2004. His dealings with the glare of the media as well as his
controversial role in the 2006 World Cup Rooney incident are covered here, as is his role in
inspiring United to the Premiership title and his PFA Player of the Year and PFA Young Player
of the Year double honor. Love him or hate him, this is the story of a player who always pro-
vokes a reaction. Tom Oldfield is a freelance sports journalist specializing in soccer, and the au-
thor of Gary Neville: The Story of a Legend.

Extreme Sail
Oliver Dewar
Foreword by Dame Ellen MacArthur
Now in a reduced-size format, this stunning book explores the sailing sub-
culture that thrives on adrenaline, with sailors seeing just how far they can
push their boats and crew.
Shortlisted for Best Illustrated Book at the 2007 British Sports
Book Awards
Sailing is becoming more and more extreme, as technological advancements
mean that vessels are getting faster, while sailors are better equipped than ever
to conquer the elements and explore uncharted waters with sophisticated satel-
lite navigation systems. Today’s sailors have an insatiable desire to smash records
and make history, conquering near-impossible weather conditions and treach-
erous icy waters in the process. Maritime marathons such as The Race, in which
competitors circumnavigate the globe in as fast a time as possible, are spring-
ing up around the globe and attracting more and more fearless individuals.
Extreme Sail is a circumnavigation of the most extreme maritime feats—in-
cluding the Vendée Globe, the Sydney-Hobart, the America’s Cup, and the Ostar.
Engaging text is accompanied by visually breathtaking photographs captur-
ing the true spirit of extreme sailing. There are also quotes throughout from
sailors who have participated in extreme events, and a gazetteer at the back
of the book gives information on all the races, events, and competitions men-
tioned. Oliver Dewar has participated in numerous transatlantic races and
offshore events on the professional ocean racing circuit. He has written a column for Yachting World magazine and currently
edits a racing team’s website; contributes to thedailysail.com; provides web, print, and radio commentary for major sailing events;
and was broadcast news producer for Dame Ellen MacArthur’s team during her successful, round-the-world record attempt.

More Tea, Vicar?
An Embarrassment of Domestic Catchphrases
Nigel Rees
A compendium of informal sayings that have caught on primarily in homes, this
fascinating collection introduces many useful phrases—“all joints on the table will
be carved” means elbows off the table, while “all fur coat and no knickers” de-
scribes someone who appears elegant on the outside, but is sleazy underneath.
In this nostalgic and intriguing examination of the familiar phrases that become em-
bedded in the daily lexicons of many households, Nigel Rees attempts to explain how
and from where these colorful sayings have become the common go-to phrases for so
many families. There are numerous phrases used by parents to deal with children’s
questions (“Why?” “Y’s a crooked letter.”), mangled words (“semi-skilled milk”), nan-
nyisms (“Back in the knife box, Miss Sharp.”), homey proverbs (“Custard boiled is
custard spoiled.”), and scores of restroom-related euphemisms—or, loophemisms (“I’m
just going to turn the vicar’s bike around”). Learn more about familiar phrases—the
many variations on “age before beauty,” and find perfect retorts for any situation—

is having a bad week. Audrey’s talking of remarriage, knife-wielding kids try to mug
him, and there’s a message on his front door: Burn in Hell Baby Killer. The one bright

Legend has it that in medieval times the children of Hamelin were led East into
Transylvania—this nightmarishly chilling modern gothic is based on the macabre
legend of the Rattenfanger, or the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
In bleak post-Ceausescu Romania, while studying the high incidence of mental ill-
ness among the women of a remote mountain village, psychiatric researcher Dr. Sasha

Mike Croft
This gripping adventure-thriller asks: What if whales tried to alert humankind to
impending ecological catastrophe?

be deeply satisfying.” —The Times
“The writing is witty and engaging . . . this is an entertaining read, with all the
ingredients of a comedy of errors.” —New Statesman
“White Man Falling is that rare and wondrous thing—a perfectly realized seri-
ous comic novel. That it is also a first novel makes it all the more extraordi-
nary.” —Sarah Dunant, author, The Birth of Venus
In the dead of night, a huge whale strands itself on Brighton beach. Soon whales are
blocking shipping, traveling up the Thames to the heart of London, and aggressively
stranding themselves in incredible numbers on crowded beaches. Amid public hyste-
ria, controversial marine biologist Roddy Ormond suspects the whales are commu-
nicating a terrible warning. When he tries to investigate with journalist Kate
Gunning, the clues point to a scandal involving a ruthless shipping magnate and cyn-
ical government figures—which soon puts Roddy and Kate in grave danger. But what
is the secret they must uncover, and can the code of the whale’s language be cracked?
The answers are deep in the ocean, where catastrophe lies. Mike Croft is the adven-

won the Goss First Novel Award.

Hell
Yasutaka Tsutsui
A masterpiece of surrealist literature from one of Japan’s best-known science
fiction writers.
“The nice thing about Tsutsui is that history and modernity combine effort-
lessly, as do drab reality and fantasy.” —The Daily Telegraph
Pantheon Books launched Yasutaka Tsutsui’s Salmonella Men on
Planet Porno in November 2008.
Tsutsui’s novel Paprika is the basis for the award-winning 2006
anime film Paprika.
Fifty-seven-year-old Takeshi has just been involved in a traffic accident. When he
wakes up, he is in a strange bar and is no longer crippled as he has been for most
of his life, but able to walk without crutches in his everyday business suit. Look-
ing around, he sees a number of familiar faces—Izumi, a colleague who had died
in a plane crash five years before; his childhood friend Yuzo, who had become a
yakuza and had been killed by a rival gang member; and Sasaki, who had frozen
to death as a homeless vagrant. This is Hell—a place where three days last as long
as 10 years on earth, and people are able to see events in both the future and the
past. Yuzo can now see the yakuza that killed him as he harasses a friend of his.
The actress Mayumi and the writer Torigai are chased by the paparazzi into an el-
evator that drops to floor 666 beneath ground level. The vivid depiction of after-
life portrayed in Hell admits the traditional horrors, but subjects them to Tsutsui’s
unique powers of enchantment—witty, amusing, and praised for its poetic style and
the wizard-like light touch of the author’s shifting focus. Yasutaka Tsutsui has won
several literary prizes and was made a Chevalier Order of Arts and Literature by
the French government. His books include Salmonella Men on Planet Porno.

A compulsive and bizarre tale of fractured reality—of a world both seductive and men-

“You may well find that the ‘one extra chapter’ you were going to read ends up
being three or four.” —Ciao on Thirteen
Mark did what people aren’t supposed to do. He left his home, his job, his wife, his friends,
his seven-month-old baby—everything. He took with him only two things: one was a
flyer advertising a nightclub with an address written on the back in spidery pencil; the
other was a small bag containing a large amount of cash. But it is not so easy to start
again. Mark must find his way in a new town where no one will talk about their past,
and where cell phones don’t work. He soon discovers that this is not all that’s strange
about this nameless town. Friendships turn into a web of deceit and motives are always
suspect. Mark’s journey, both physical and metaphysical, takes him through layers of
reality and toward refuge of an unexpected kind. Sebastian Beaumont is a psychother-

On an island in the southern Atlantic seas, a baby girl is born one dark winter’s day
while the spin-drift wind sings strange songs around the gullies and cliffs. But Gulai’s
mother dies soon after giving birth and her father, Dr. Orion Prosper, the only med-

stops crying and her aunt is forced to seek advice from Sophia, the island’s other healer,
in secret. Thus begins Gulia’s life on Ergo Island—betraying her father and becom-
ing inextricably linked to the traditions he is working to eradicate. Gulai is curious
about the “witch” the islanders publicly revile but privately visit, the “madness” which
drove a young woman to her death, and the secrets which lie at the heart of all their
lives. Dawn Garisch is the author of three YA novels, including Babyshoes.

Ero dietro di te: you know what that means in English? It means I was behind you. She
was actually sitting at a table behind us for the entire meal and she spent the whole

“For all this time, all these years, I’ve been right behind you, as close as can be, and
you didn’t notice me. It’s obvious you and I were meant to be together, but we screwed
it up every time. Still, I’m right here, right now, and I want you to know it, the ball’s

In this collection, Petr Kràl has the unerring ability to perceive, to catch the common-
place by surprise, and with unsettling clarity see beyond the everyday to the fabric of
life beneath. Whether describing twilight, a toothpick, the ritual of shaving, or the act
of going upstairs, his gaze is ingenuous, humble, amazed. Mute objects, fleeting gestures,
changeless passions—Kràl forces us to look at them anew. Each limpid, graceful essay
is a brief voyage of discovery in which lowly objects and everyday actions, so often un-
observed, are transfigured. Petr Kràl is a prolific poet, essayist, and film critic who was
a member of the Czech surrealist movement. Milan Kundera is the author of The Book
of Laughter and Forgetting, Ignorance, Immortality, and The Unbearable Lightness of
Being. Frank Wynne is a prize-winning translator and the author of I Was Vermeer.

literary success.” —The New Statesman
Winner of the prestigious Prix Interallié
When the unnamed narrator receives an invitation to visit Egypt as the guest of the
French Embassy in Cairo, he anticipates a boring week of literary discussions and of-
ficial dinners. But from the start, his fellow author—Martin Millet—seems determined
to stir up the tensions that underlie the politeness of Egyptian society. He offends Is-
lamic sensibilities with his views on art and the novel, and his entire stay eventually
degenerates into an obsessive search for an Egyptian woman willing to have sex with
him. The atmosphere between the two authors becomes one of mutual mistrust bor-
dering on open dislike. As the narrator finds himself dragged ever deeper into Mil-
let’s obsessions, he begins not only to fear for his own and Millet’s safety, but also for
the future of Western civilization. Florian Zeller is the author of Artificial Snow, for
which he won the Hachette Foundation Literary Prize; Julien Parme; and Love or Some-
thing Like It.

Translated by John Elsworth
“ O n e o f t h e f o u r m o s t i m p o r t a n t w o r k s o f 2 0 t h - c e n t u r y l i t e ra t u r e .”
—Vladimir Nabokov
A story of family dysfunction, parricide, political terror, conspiracy, and murder, this mas-
terpiece also points to apocalypse and redemption. The world of history—the revolution
of 1905—and the world of myth—in the figure of Saturn, who devours his children and
in turn is devoured by them—are intertwined. Russia is torn apart by the conflict between
revolutions and reaction; at the level of myth, these opposites are indistinguishable. The
Ableukhovs, father and son, embody this conflict, but are scions of the same Mongol lin-
eage. The city itself is the child of its autocratic founder, Peter the Great, who maintains
his power over it through the agency of his statue, the Bronze Horseman. Andrey Bely is
the pseudonym of Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev (1880–1934), a novelist, poet, theorist, and
literary critic considered to have influenced several literary schools, in particular Sym-
bolism. His influence is often compared to that of James Joyce in the English-speaking
world. John Elsworth’s work includes books and articles about Andrey Bely, as well as a
translation of Bely’s first novel The Silver Dove.

Diary of a Seducer
Søren Kierkegaard
A part of the larger work Either/Or that contrasts a life of hedonism with one of ethi-
cal responsibility, this is a classic of seduction literature.
The disturbing narrative of a man who explores his sense of detachment by deliberately
arousing the passion of a young society girl, this diary records his discovery of the girl and
his attempts to control her. Inspired by events in Kierkegaard’s own life that are still shrouded
in mystery, this story is a vivid exploration of the complex psychology of cruelty and love.
Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855) was a prolific philosopher and theologian. His best-known
works include Either/Or and Fear and Trembling.

Letter to a Hostage
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
From the author of a best-loved children’s classic, this 1943 open letter was written
to his friend Léon Werth, a Jewish citizen living in occupied France and the subject
of The Little Prince’s dedication.
“Morand was a citizen of the world, with a sharp eye and a neat turn of phrase.”
—The Tablet
“Morand successfully combined being a best-selling author and an important rep-
resentative of the French government.” —The Modern Language Review
The narrator, sent to an African country to run a branch of a large French bank, in-
dulges in a liaison with Clotilde; only to discover in her unexpected and shocking depths
of perversity. This elegant novella of disturbing eroticism was the book with which Morand
returned triumphantly to the literary scene in 1954. It explores territory very different
in tone from his earlier, mildly shocking cosmopolitanism. Paul Morand (1888–1976)
was a diplomat, novelist, poet, traveler, and socialite. He is the author of The Allure of

Journey to Mount Athos
François Augiéras
Touching on such themes as the immortality of the spirit, God, magic in the
natural world, reincarnation, and homosexuality, this work was inspired by
the author’s retreats to Mount Athos and the time he spent with the Orthodox
monks.
“Augiéras is one of those authors whose works shine in secret and illumi-
nate hidden undercurrents in his readers . . . He is the author of long-for-
gotten masterpieces.” —Le Nouvel Observateur
An adolescent boy sails to Mount Athos. His spiritual and erotic wanderings
among the monasteries and remote hermitages of the Holy Mountain take both
author and reader on a journey of self-discovery. Augiéras himself spoke of
Athos as a place where you “find everything within yourself,” and of this book
as “a sojourn in the Land of the Spirits according to the strictest Buddhist or
Pythagorean Orthodoxy.” Described variously as an anti-Christian nomad, a
barbarian in the West, and a madman, Augiéras is one of France’s great un-
derground writers. Like its author, this remarkable novel is full of subtle, an-
cient wisdom. François Augiéras (1925–1971) was a writer and painter whose
works include The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.

Sonnets
William Shakespeare
There is no major written language into which Shakespeare’s sonnets have not been trans-
lated, including Latin, Turkish, Japanese, Swahili, Esperanto, and Klingon.
Shakespeare’s sonnets are thought to have been written for a private audience across sev-
eral years, before being published in 1609. The verses that compose the sonnets are often
subversive, elusive, and intimate, shaping an erotic body of poetry in the pursuit of the depths
and parameters of emotion. William Shakespeare (1564–1616) is widely regarded as the great-

Letter to My Father
Franz Kafka
Translated by Hannah Stokes and Richard Stokes
Thoroughly edited, extensively annotated, and newly translated, this is not only one of Kafka’s
most inspired works but one of the most lucid and touching psychological documents of
the 20th century.
Conflict between father and son is one of the oldest themes in literature, and in this open letter
to his father—a letter that was never sent—Kafka tries to come to terms with one of the most
deeply rooted obsessions of his troubled soul. Written as a dramatic confession in which writer
and man are gathered together in front of an ambivalent figure of authority, Letter to My Father
is a desperate attempt to retrace the origins of a turbulent relationship between an unflinching
parent and an extremely sensitive child. Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was one of the major Ger-
man-language fiction writers of the 20th century, known for The Metamorphosis and The Trial.

Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe
A simple adventure story and a spiritual autobiography, Robinson Crusoe has captured the
imagination of readers for nearly three centuries.
Daniel Defoe’s first novel, published in 1719, is considered by many to be the first novel in
English, and its success was so enormous that by the end of the 19th century it had spawned
more translations and versions than any other English book. Defoe’s castaway—shipwrecked,
imperiled, and facing a host of elemental challenges—lives an archetypal life of survival, ad-
venture, and personal development. Children of all ages, not to mention their parents, delight
in cabin boy Jim Hawkins and the treasure hunt he undertakes in this rollicking narrative of
cliff-hanging adventure. But more than a children’s classic, the novel lays claim to being one
of the greatest feats of storytelling in the English language, with characters such as the un-
forgettable Long John Silver becoming part of the cultural consciousness. Daniel Defoe (1660–
1731) is often referred to as the founder of the English novel.

Dracula
Bram Stoker
A thriller of hypnotic power; a dark exploration of sexuality, mythology, and the supernatural;
and a plain old-fashioned masterpiece of storytelling, the nightmarish tale of Dracula is one
of the all-time great classics of horror fiction.
Awareness of Dracula as a masterly gothic thriller has increased ever since its publication in
1897, and the novel is regarded as one of the most seminal horror stories ever written, hav-
ing inspired countless copycat tales and literary spin-offs. The tale of young Englishman Jonathan
Harker’s journey to Transylvania, into the very heart of Count Dracula’s evil realm, is com-
pelling, but it is perhaps the journey of the vampire to England—and the dangers he poses to
Jonathan’s beloved Mina—that is more horrifying. Bram Stoker (1847–1912) wrote several
other horror novels, including The Jewel of Seven Stars and The Lair of the White Worm.

Frankenstein
Mary Shelley
Considered by many to be the first science fiction novel, the tragic tale of Victor Franken-
stein and the tortured creation he rejects is a classic fable about the pursuit of knowledge,
the nature of beauty, and the monstrosity inherent to man.
Since it was first published in 1818, Mary Shelley’s seminal novel has generated countless print,
stage, and screen adaptations, but none has ever matched the power and philosophical reso-
nance of the original. Composed as part of a challenge with Byron and Shelley to conjure up
the most terrifying ghost story, Frankenstein narrates the chilling tale of a being created by a
bright young scientist and the catastrophic consequences that ensue. Mary Shelley (1797–1851)
was a novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer. She also
edited the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley.

“With his usual comic and cruel candor, Dostoevsky concedes that his observations may
be sour and jaundiced, and it is characteristic of him that he does not conceal his bias.”
—Saul Bellow
In June 1862, Dostoevsky left Petersburg on his first excursion to Western Europe. Ostensi-
bly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, he also wished to see first-
hand the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of
his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan,
and Vienna. His impressions on what he saw, “Winter Notes on Summer Impressions,” were
first published in the February 1863 issue of Vremya (Time), the periodical he edited. Fyodor
Dostoevsky (1821–1881) is the author of The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment,

Set in the Charente country and the Paris music halls of the 1930s, The Voyage tells of the tra-
vails of one man’s quest for love—love for a woman, and love for France. Available once more

historical romance.
Industrious Carrie and carefree May must venture into the world to find work and
lodging when their Leeds pub is sold out from under them to make way for the com-

come a railway engineer. His companion, Charles Hammond is the dissolute heir to
a vast fortune, withheld from him by an overbearing mother and grasping stepfa-
ther. The futures of both men will become bound up with those of the two sisters.
As time passes the sisters overcome their adversities, though there seems little hope
of reconciliation or of either of them finding love and lasting happiness. But this is
1848, the Year of Revolutions. The streets of Paris erupt in bloody insurrection—
while Alex Sinclair is commissioned to bring the railway to Harrogate. Sally Zig-

Bad Language
Words and Phrases to Avoid in Business
Graham Edmonds
Graham Edmonds dissects the managerial nonsense that has turned ef-
fective communication into a frequent battle between meaningless clichés
and tired phrases.
Language in the workplace matters, and it can inspire as easily as it can
deflate. An essential aspect of any organization is the way it communi-
cates both internally and externally, and the language used contributes
greatly to its potential for success or failure. Bad business language has
become commonplace, making this book essential reading for professionals.
From HR, marketing, finance, consulting, and I.T. to local politicians, Bad
Language considers the chaotic garbled words and phrases that are too
commonly used, and the resulting issues of spin, manipulation, and plain
deceit. Graham Edmonds is the author of The Business of Bullshit, The
Good Web Site Guide, Liar’s Paradise, and Lying in Business.

The Mega Book of Useless Information
Noel Botham
Perfect for trivia lovers, an astounding collection of amazing, mind-boggling, and
utterly inconsequential findings.
Did you know that fingernails are made from the same substance as a bird’s beak?
That cigarettes contain honey? Or that a ferret will die if it cannot find a mate? For
anyone fascinated by the trifling, or just plain desperate to know the answers to the
most bizarre of questions, this volume is packed with a bevy of utterly useless data
drawn from every imaginable area of knowledge. Tidbits include the finding that the
amount of heat your body emits in 30 minutes is enough to bring half a gallon of
water to a boil, and such nuggets as the fact that there are more than 30,000 diets
on public record, and that the only animals that can get sunburn are pigs and hu-
mans. Humorous and alarmingly trivial, this is a fun look at all the things you never
thought you would need to know. Noel Botham is a the chairman of the Useless In-

Arise Sir Sean Connery
The Biography of Britain’s Greatest Living Actor
John Parker
The real story behind the Academy Award–, Golden Globe–, and BAFTA Award–winning
actor considered by many to be the definitive 007.
Sean Connery is one of the world’s true superstars, applauded by critics and filmgoers alike.
Now, John Parker traces the rise to stardom of the tough Edinburgh street kid, who left school
at the age of 13. Arriving in London with gold teeth and tattoos to seek his fortune in the meat
market of bodybuilding, Connery fought against snobbery to become a self-taught Shakespearean
actor. Then came the big break. Auditioning for the part of James Bond, he told producers with
typical bluntness how Bond should be played, and it landed him the job—and overnight star-
dom. Connery went on to become one of the world’s most versatile, highly paid actors, win-
ning an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables. Here, John Parker offers an engaging portrait
of one of the most glamorous, talented, and complex actors in movie history. John Parker is
the author of Jack and Secret Hero.

Daniel Craig
The Biography
Sarah Marshall
From provocative choices like The Mother to his triumphant turn as Bond, here is the
fully updated story of a supremely talented actor.
He’s gorgeous, tremendously talented, charming, and sexy. His breathtaking performance
as the new James Bond in Casino Royale won him legions of fans and proved that, as well

ematic icon to huge critical acclaim. Daniel Craig has truly made it as an A-list film star.
This fascinating and affectionate book reveals everything about Hollywood’s newest lead-
ing man—how he endured poverty-stricken years when he was first struggling to make it
as an actor in London; how he rejected the “trivial” publicity that came when he started
to make a name for himself; his relationships, including his marriage to a British actress
with whom he has a daughter; plus his encounters with Sienna Miller and Kate Moss; and
how he has handled the adulation that has come from his new role as 007. Sarah Mar-

Russell T Davies: T Is for Television
The Authorised Screen Biography
Mark Aldridge and Andy Murray
Drawing extensively on new interview material with Davies himself and many of
his key collaborators, this is an in-depth look at the man who regenerated the Doc-
tor Who series and created Torchwood.
Russell T. Davies is currently one of the most influential, visible creative forces in British
television. His work over the last 10 years, including Queer as Folk, Bob and Rose,
and The Second Coming, has marked him as a writer of note, while his rejuvenated
take on Doctor Who is an enormous hit. At the 2006 BAFTAs, he received the Den-
nis Potter award for “outstanding writing for television,” among other acclaim, and
he is one of a new generation of nonperforming stars—a true mover and shaker in con-
temporary popular culture. Davies is also a thoroughly modern example of a TV writer.
A self-confessed television obsessive, he has worked on everything from children’s dra-
mas and soaps to literary adaptations—from edgy, confrontational late-night fare to
family viewing. The whole of Davies’ career is covered here, from early forays in the-
ater and graphic illustration, through to all of his major television work, from the best
known and fondly remembered to the barely seen and swiftly forgotten. Mark Aldridge
is currently completing a PhD. Andy Murray is the author of Into the Unknown: The
Fantastic Life of Nigel Kneale and Phobic: Modern Horror Stories.

X-Rated
Adventures of an Exploitation Filmmaker
Stanley Long and Simon Sheridan
Foreword by Robert Lindsay
Afterword by Roman Polanski
Lifting the lid on a forgotten era of filmmaking, this memoir from one of the most
prolific and profitable independent filmmakers provides new insight into the se-
cret world of low-budget movies.
For four decades Stanley Long wrote, produced, and directed some of the most com-
mercially successful low-budget movies in British film history. An X-rated movie trail-
blazer, he gave the postwar cinema audience something they couldn’t see
elsewhere—bare boobs, saucy thrills, and naughty postcard humor come to life. Con-
troversial, unapologetic, and wildly successful, Stanley Long’s productions came fast
and furious—infuriating highbrow critics, the police, the church, and the govern-
ment—but they proved to be box office gold. Stanley ruffled feathers with his cult
1969 documentary The Wife Swappers, an overnight sensation that broke box of-
fice records in London’s West End and ran continuously for six months, going on
to play to packed houses in New York. Stanley’s 1975 comedy hit Adventures of a
Taxi Driver spawned two sequels and was sold to more than 35 countries. In addi-
tion to all this, Stanley also became one of the most successful independent film dis-
tributors in Europe, controlling a business empire respected, and envied, by his
contemporaries. Packed with fascinating, sexy, and sometimes poignant anecdotes,
Stanley’s unique story explains how he made it big in the toughest industry in the
world. Simon Sheridan is the author of Keeping the British End Up. Robert Lind-
say is a Tony Award–winning actor who has been in many movies and has appeared
in Absolutely Fabulous and Extras. His first job in the film industry was when Stan-
ley cast him in Adventures of a Taxi Driver in 1976. Roman Polanski is an Acad-
emy Award-winning director whose films include Chinatown, The Pianist, and
Rosemary’s Baby.

The Unauthorised Guide to the Hannibal Lecter Trilogy
Daniel O’Brien
Offering incisive critical appraisals of Thomas Harris’ novels as well as shrewd insider
assessments of their screen adaptations, this is the essential guide to the most fascinat-
ing screen villain of our time.
In an incisive account of the Hannibal Lecter novels and their subsequent movie adapta-
tions, Lecter creator Thomas Harris’ career is examined in detail, and the development of
the novels and screenplays is closely analyzed. The author sheds new light on the script-
ing, casting, and shooting of all four movies, and describes how the disappointing box-of-
fice returns on Manhunter gave way to the critical blockbuster The Silence of the Lambs.
There are revealing insights into the production of Hannibal, and the story is brought fully
up to date with coverage of Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising. Daniel O’Brien’s previous
books include Cameron Diaz, Daniel Craig, The Frank Sinatra Film Guide, and Halle Berry.

With more than 150 previously unpublished photographs covering their entire

Pink Floyd emerged from the world of British psychedelic music to become the biggest

beyond, this handsome new paperback edition features more than 150 previously

Creative Ways to Motivate Your Horse

How to address the causes of listlessness in horses, for a happier animal and owner.
Some horses drive their riders to distraction by simply not moving under the saddle,
and nothing the rider does seems to stimulate them. This book discusses the possi-
ble causes for a lack of motivation—from physical problems or incorrect feeding to
permanent under- or over-demand of the horse—and it outlines solutions that can
recover a seemingly hopeless situation. It shows how, with discipline and creativity,
it is possible to turn an idle creature into a motivated competition or leisure horse.

Magic Moments
The Greatest Royal Photographs of All Time
Arthur Edwards, MBE
A collection of photographs and stories focusing on the British monarchy, from the
photographer who has been by their side for nearly three decades.
Arthur Edwards has been Royal Photographer for Britain’s bestselling daily newspa-
per, The Sun, for more than 30 years. He has captured the most poignant and mem-
orable moments in the recent history of the monarchy, including such happy and loving
moments as the start of Charles and Diana’s marriage, Prince William’s first steps, and
Prince Harry’s first day at Eton. His images range from candid shots to intimate por-
traits of rare moments when protocol is put aside and the mask of duty slips to reveal
the true personalities behind the public figures. Arthur’s tremendous career has made
him a most familiar face on the Royal circuit. Princess Diana referred to him as “our
Arthur” and Prince Charles introduces him to world leaders when they are on royal
tours. Arthur also has some fascinating stories to go with his years’ worth of magical
and momentous pictures. He was there when Patti Palmer-Tomkinson announced to
the assembled press that her “Uncle Harry” would be joining her party—and out stepped
Prince Charles wearing false glasses, nose, and moustache. Assembled here is a com-
prehensive collection of photographs and images, accompanied by Arthur’s own words,
which together provide a valuable insider’s account of the history of the British royal
family. Arthur Edwards was awarded an MBE for his services to newspapers in 2003.

Hidcote
The Garden and Lawrence Johnston
Graham S. Pearson
An illuminating literary and visual tour of the garden in spring, summer,
and fall.
“The popular garden writer Anna Pavord captures the essence of each gar-
den section in her illuminating visual tour of this, the most popular small
garden of the National Trust.” —Current Books on Gardening & Botany
Often described as “the most beautiful garden in England,” Hidcote is a jewel
in England’s horticultural history. The garden’s creator, Lawrence Johnston, was
inspired by many of the Arts and Crafts design ideas at the turn of the 20th cen-
tury. From 1907 this intriguing American-born plant hunter transformed 10 acres
of Gloucestershire hillside into one of the world’s most influential gardens, a com-
plex mixture of hedged “rooms” and vistas, lavish planting, and simpler, infor-
mal areas. Today, it is one of the most popular gardens in the country, with more
than 130,000 visitors every year. The book covers the history of this stunning
garden, including its fascinating creator who fused planting ideas from various
parts of the world while making Hidcote. In addition, Anna Pavord’s text illu-
minates the garden as it is today. Graham S. Pearson has worked at Hidcote Manor
Garden for several years, delighting visitors with his insight and knowledge of
the place and encouraging all those who come to look deeper into its charms.

Why There Almost Certainly Is a God
Doubting Dawkins
Keith Ward
A new and insightful philosophical response to the atheistic treaties of Richard Dawkins.
Prisoner of God
Michel Benoît
From an expelled monk, an enthralling look at the nature of monastery life and the
true inner workings of the Catholic Church.
A brilliant student with a promising career ahead of him as a biologist under the guid-
ance of Nobel Prize–winner Jacques Monod, Michel Benoît decided instead to follow
the path of God and take on monastic orders. He entered a monastery at age 22 as an
unordained monk, but after more than 20 years of self-sacrifice and a fraught quest for
God, Michel was “discharged” by the Church. In this compelling autobiography, Michel
explores the events that led to the Catholic hierarchy rejecting one of its own. Along the
way he investigates sectarianism and the methods used by organizations to stifle free-
dom of expression and to crush the individual. A gripping true story, this account re-
veals how the mysterious world of the Catholic abbey handles issues such as solitude,
silence, and sexuality. Michel Benoît is the author of The Thirteenth Apostle.

Confucius for Today
A Century of Chinese Proverbs
Gerd de Ley and David Potter
It is better to light the candle than to curse the darkness.
He who asks a question may be a fool for five minutes; he who asks no questions
stays a fool forever.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him
for a lifetime.
With such wisdom and truth as to be eternally relevant, Chinese proverbs have found
their way through the centuries and into many cultures. Coming face to face with
the monumental wisdom of the legendary Master Kung—better known by his Lat-
inized name of Confucius—and others is a revealing and humbling experience. The
Master’s influence is to be found in the greater part of all proverbs that emanate from
China. Confucius encouraged in his followers a careful study of the outside world,
and a process of deep thought through which to consider and judge their observa-
tions. As Confucius said, “As one lamp serves to dispel a thousand years of darkness,
so one flash of wisdom destroys ten thousand years of ignorance.” Gerd de Ley and
David Potter are also the authors of Do Unto Others . . . Then Run and Erotic Wit.

From Poison Arrows to Prozac
How Deadly Toxins Changed Our Lives Forever
Stanley Feldman
A captivating account of the unlikely origins and astounding properties of the infamous
curare poison.
In the 16th century, when explorers traveled deeper into the jungles of South America in
search of gold and spices, they brought back many colorful tales of their adventures to
amaze and impress their sponsors. None of these tales was more astonishing, or caused
more concern, than that of the mystical properties of the substance with which the na-
tives anointed their darts and arrows. So begins the astonishing true story of the discov-
ery of one of the most important substances in medical science. Curare poison was to become
the cornerstone of modern anaesthetics and went on to provide the key to how we un-
derstand the nervous system, leading to drugs as diverse as indigestion pills and Prozac
and, more recently, it has led to our understanding of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s dis-
ease. In this fascinating book, Professor Stanley Feldman traces the evolution of a sub-
stance that has saved countless lives and revolutionized the way we see our minds and
bodies. Stanley Feldman is the author of Life Begins . . . and coeditor of Panic Nation.

Doctor of Love
James Graham and His Celestial Bed
Lydia Syson
How a sex therapy pioneer with a genius for spectacle caused a stir.
“A carnivalesque tumble through the weird and wonderful world of the first sex
doctor, this book introduces Lydia Syson as an accomplished biographer and his-
torian of ideas. Penetrating insights and a lively eye for detail make this a vastly
entertaining and compelling read.” —Frances Stonor Saunders, author, The
Devil’s Broker
Widely accepted as the world’s first sex therapist, Dr. James Graham was devoted to
the research of the effect of physical stimuli on the psyche, and more specifically on
sexual activity. It was this that led him to invent his infamous Celestial Bed, a contraption
akin to a torture rack, yet built with the intent to impart exquisite sexual pleasure rather
than excruciating physical pain. Medicine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries was
generally more prone to inflict pain than to relieve it. Patients were bled, blistered, lanced,
poked, and chopped up, all with little or no anesthesia, and it was the hurt adminis-
tered by these methods that caused Graham to concern himself with the more gentle
side of the profession. Unsurprisingly, such a concern was met with both outrage and
controversy. Syson’s biography is a truly emotive depiction of both the man himself and
19th-century society. By following him from his native Edinburgh to America and back
again, Doctor of Love achieves a breadth not commonly found in biography, and ren-
ders an unforgettable portrait of a truly remarkable man. Lydia Syson is a journalist
and former BBC radio producer.

Cannibal Killers
The Impossible Monsters
Moira Martingale
Chronicling the exploits of those few, uncommon criminals who have killed for flesh like
Jeffrey Dahmer, this is a chilling look at anthropophagy—the eating of human flesh—
the crime which shocks and stuns more than any other.
Moira Martingale traces the cannibalism phenomenon back to the 16th century to the no-
torious Sawney Bean who, together with his family, consumed more than 1,000 people over
a period of 25 years. Modern murderers continue many of the same practices, including:
Fritz Haarmann—who would tear out young men’s throats to drink their blood, before sell-
ing their flesh for meat; Jeffrey Dahmer, the murderer of 17 young men whose dismembered
body parts were found in his apartment; Edward Gein—the role model for Hitchcock’s Psy-
cho—who after his mother’s death began killing and eating women; and Andrei Chikatilo,
the Russian cannibal who has the dubious reputation of being the worst cannibal killer in
recent history. These crimes, and others, are explored, together with speculation about how
such monsters are made. Is there a clinical explanation for vampirism? And when it comes
to deciding whether these people are sane or insane, why are psychiatrists and lawyers not
always in agreement?

The Battle of Aughrim 1691
Michael McNally
A new history of Ireland’s bloodiest battle—often called Ireland’s Gettysburg.
With more than 60,000 combatants, the Battle of the Boyne, which took place on
July 1, 1690, was the largest battle ever fought on Irish soil, and has long been re-
garded as the pivotal event of the Williamite War due to the presence of two crowned
Kings of England—James II and William III—in command of the opposing armies.
This is in fact a fallacy, as the crucial engagement of the conflict, and indeed Ire-
land’s bloodiest battle, took place almost a year later when almost 20,000 Jacobite
troops met an opposing Williamite army of over 25,000 men on the afternoon of
July 12th, 1691, outside the village of Aughrim in County Galway in the west of Ire-
land. Aughrim was truly decisive in that, because of the casualties suffered by the
defeated Jacobite forces, it was the last field engagement of a war which had begun
in the spring of 1689 and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Limerick in Oc-
tober 1691. As a result of this the battle is often referred to as both “Aughrim of the
Slaughter” and “Ireland’s Gettysburg.” Michael McNally is a military historian whose
other books include Battle of the Boyne 1690 and Easter Rising 1916.

Pirates
A History
Tim Travers
Arrgh! A worldwide history of piracy from ancient times to the present day.
Most histories of piracy start with swashbuckling adventures in the Caribbean in the
1500s and move on to the Golden Age of piracy from the 1660s to the 1720s. These
areas cannot be overlooked, but in fact, piracy has a much longer and broader his-
tory to its name. This comprehensive history starts with piracy in the ancient and
classical periods, and then shifts to piracy in the Middle Ages and the Mediterranean,
before treating in fine detail the era of the Caribbean and the Golden Age. Also in-
cluded are chapters on the Barbary corsairs, Chinese piracy, and a look at modern
piracy. Tim Travers has taught the history of piracy at University of Calgary for more
than 20 years. His other titles include Gallipoli 1915, How the War Was Won, and
The Killing Ground. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

Under the Bloody Flag
Pirates of the Tudor Age
John Appleby
Early stories of the pirates who led the way for better-known Caribbean piracy.
Long before Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, and Black Bart terrorized the Caribbean, the
seas around the British Isles swarmed with pirates. Thousands of men turned to piracy
at sea, often as a makeshift strategy of survival. Although the young Francis Drake
became the most famous pirate of the period, scores of little-known pirate leaders op-
erated during this time, acquiring mixed reputations on land and at sea. Captain Henry
Strangeways earned notoriety for his attacks on French shipping in the English Chan-
nel and the Irish Sea, selling booty ashore in southwest England and Wales. The first
British pirates led erratic careers, but their roving in local waters paved the way for
the more aggressive and ambitious deep-sea piracy in the Caribbean. John Appleby
contributed to Pirates—The Politics of Plunder, 1550–1650 and also contributed an
article on Irish female pirates to The Oxford History of the British Empire.

Man and Horse
Four Thousand Years of the Mounted Warrior
Andrew Sinclair
Taking as his inspiration Walter Prescott Webb’s seminal work, The Great Plains,
Andrew Sinclair brilliantly describes the relationship between man and horse over
4,000 years.
Until very recently, the horse has been the decisive factor in determining military suc-
cess. Showing that the art of warfare from horseback with its culture of mobility has
always been at conflict with the urban domesticated culture, this hugely ambitious
and fascinating book argues that that tension has created much of the great art and
culture of humankind. Great exponents of the art of equestrian warfare discussed here
include Alexander the Great, Hannibal, King Arthur, Saladin, the Knights of the Tem-
plar, the Reivers of the Scottish Borders, the Mongols, North American Indians, the
Confederate forces during the American Civil War, and the Boers. The uses of the horse
by highwaymen and figures such as Ned Kelly are also examined. Andrew Sinclair is
the author of several history books, including The Anatomy of Terror; The Better Half,
winner of the Somerset Maugham Prize; Rosslyn; and The Sword and the Grail.

SS Leviathan
America’s First Superliner
Brent Holt
One of the most popular liners of the 1920s was a ship of many firsts—
this illustrated history captures her story and remembers this great liner.
The story of the Leviathan, originally called Vaterland, is a fascinating one. A
remarkable ship, she is frequently not given the credit she deserves for her con-
tributions to the U.S. Merchant Marine, and has been given short thrift by many
writers who describe her only as a failure. Nothing could be farther from the
truth. She was the first American superliner and set the stage for future suc-
cesses with other famous passenger vessels such as the America and United
States. Although of German origin, the “Levi” was popular and became a house-
hold name across the U.S. and other parts of the world. Her interiors were stunning and she was an engineering marvel. After an
extensive refit by U.S. Lines in 1923 she was also the safest and arguably the best of the “Balin trio.” Her adventurous career made
her seem more a living thing than a hunk of steel. Brent Holt is an elementary school teacher. He lives in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

Hitler’s Jihadis
Muslim Volunteers of the SS
Jonathan Trigg
The story of tens of thousands of Muslims from as far away as India who volunteered to
wear the SS double lightning flashes and serve alongside their erstwhile conquerors.
As the West finds itself embroiled in conflict with radical Islam at home and abroad, it is fas-
cinating to hear the echoes of militant Islam from World War II. Jonathan Trigg gives insight
into the prewar politics that inspired these Islamic volunteers, who for the most part did not
survive. Those who did survive the war and the bloody retribution that followed saw the rep-
utation of the units in which they served berated as militarily inept and castigated for atroc-
ities against unarmed civilians. Firsthand accounts and official records serve to peel away the
propaganda to reveal the complexity that lies at the heart of the story of Hitler’s most un-
likely “Aryans.” Jonathan Trigg is the author of Hitler’s Flemish Lions and Hitler’s Gauls.

The Real Story Behind German’s Resistance Heroine
Frank McDonough
The inspiring story of one of the great German heroes who actively opposed the Third Reich.
Sophie Scholl was one of the members of an underground German protest movement against
Hitler rule, based at Munich University, during World War II. Drawing on a fascinating va-
riety of sources, including original documents, Frank McDonough tells the dramatic, absorbing,
and inspirational story of her brave struggle against the Nazi regime and examines her legacy
of heroism in Germany. This important new biography shows that not all Germans blindly
followed Hitler’s regime and her refusal to be silent in the face of injustice is a story that de-

Freud’s War
Helen Fry
Using previously unpublished family archives and photographs, including correspondence
and Sigmund Freud’s diary, Helen Fry opens a window onto the Freuds’ family life in
prewar Vienna and describes how this most famous of families became exiled from its
homeland by the Nazis.
Despite his worldwide reputation as the father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud’s se-
curity in his native Vienna changed overnight when Hitler’s forces annexed Austria on March
12, 1938. His books had already been burned across Germany, and now he and his family
were at immediate risk. The Nazis carried out regular raids on Jewish families’ homes, and
the Freuds were no exception. They suffered a period of house arrest and two months of
uncertainty, before finally securing papers for emigration to England and making a last-
minute dramatic escape. It was after becoming refugees in Britain, however, that the Freuds’
story takes a fascinating turn. Following their escape from Austria, both Sigmund’s son Mar-
tin and his grandson Walter enlisted in the British Forces, going on to fight for Britain be-
hind enemy lines in Austria. Helen Fry is the author of The King’s Own Most Loyal Enemy
Aliens: Germans Who Fought for Britain in the Second World War.

King John
England’s Evil King?
Ralph V. Turner
Long ago having acquired the epithet “Bad,” he is reputed to be the worst of England’s kings.
Before his death in 1216, King John’s desperate exploitation of his subjects for ever more
money had turned him into the mythical monster of Hollywood legend. In contrast to his
brother Richard, he appeared incompetent in battle, failing to defend Normandy (1202–04),
and was unsuccessful in recovering his lost lands in 1214. A continuing crisis was a constant
need for money, forcing John to drain England of funds for campaigns in France, demand-
ing unlawful and oppressive new taxes. Adding to his evil reputation was an ill-tempered per-
sonality and a streak of pettiness or spitefulness that led him to monstrous acts, including
murdering his own nephew. King John’s unpopularity culminated in a final crisis, a revolt by
the English baronage, 1215–16, aimed at subjecting him to the rule of law, which resulted
in his grant of Magna Carta. Ralph V. Turner is a former history professor at Florida State
University. He lives in Tallahassee, Florida.

Eminent Victorian Women
Elizabeth Longford
First published in 1981, this look at the lives of 11 exceptional women—including George
Eliot, Florence Nightingale, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and the Brontës—serves to illuminate
much about the lot of all women in the 19th century.
“She remains easily the best writer in what is predominantly a literary family.”
—The New York Times on Elizabeth Longford
Elizabeth Longford has chosen a group of Victorian women who, in their actions or writing,
challenged the repressive rules of established society. They include Charlotte, Emily, and Anne
Brontë, whose cloistered lives were illuminated by the vividness of their creative genius;
Josephine Butler, who brought about the end of the infamous Contagious Diseases Acts; Annie
Besant, who campaigned vigorously for the rights of women subject to unreasonable husbands
or harsh employers; Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin brought the cru-
elties of slavery to the world’s attention; and James Barry, born Margaret Bulkley, medical
reformer and arguably the first British female to qualify as a surgeon. This is a fascinating
account of a crucial period of struggle for women’s rights and of some of the remarkable per-
sonalities who took part. Elizabeth Longford (1906–2002) was also the author of All in the
Family, Jameson’s Raid, The Pebbled Shore, A Pilgrimage of Passion, Points for Parents, Queen
Victoria, and Victoria R. I., for which she won the James Tait Black memorial prize.

Faustus
The Life and Times of a Renaissance Legend
Leo Ruickbie
Five hundred years ago the legend was born of a man who sold his soul to the Devil for
power, wealth, and women—the biography of a legend that has inspired genius and still
inspires high art and popular culture alike.
Around the world there are hundreds of nightly performances of Goethe’s Faust as well as
actual attempts at soul-selling on eBay. Faustus has rightly been described as an icon of
modern culture. But in 500 years no one has written his biography—until now. Faustus is
the real story behind the legend. It is the story of a 16th-century scandal, which claimed
mastery of the forbidden magical arts and dared rival all of the miracles attributed to Jesus.
He evoked uproar and was accused of the worst crimes. But Faustus was not a charlatan,
nor was he in league with the devil. To find the real Faustus is to find the real history of
his age, and to take a tour from alchemical labs in princely dungeons to war-torn Italy, Mar-
tin Luther’s Reformation Wittenberg, and the magnificence of Charles V’s court. The life
of the legend becomes as real as any living person. Leo Ruickbie is an historian and soci-
ologist of magic, witchcraft, and Wicca; and the author of Witchcraft Out of the Shadows.

John Milton
A Biography
Neil Forsyth
A lively new biography of one of the most significant writers, thinkers, and political ac-
tivists of all time.
“Forsyth’s scholarship recreates and redefines the milieu out of which Milton’s works
emerged.” —Milton Quarterly on The Satanic Epic
John Milton (1608–1674) is often regarded as one of England’s greatest poets, second only to
Shakespeare. Best known for his magnum opus Paradise Lost, Milton was also one of history’s
most politically active writers. This extensive look at Milton’s life and ethos addresses the psy-
chological complexities and political tenets of the man who dared to put words in God’s mouth,
and whose life was spared following the restoration of the monarchy due only to his reputation
as a poet. Neil Forsyth is the author of The Satanic Epic, winner of the 2004 James Holly Han-
ford prize from the Milton Society of America, and the coeditor of Milton, Rights and Liberties.
