The Borough has been divided into two broad areas; Conservation Areas and Other Areas to which the furniture choice responds. For example, in Conservation Areas a classic seat has been chosen, whereas for Other Areas a more modern and contemporary seat was selected. To assist in the street furniture specification, a number of diagramatic plans have been devised to help with the classification of individual streets. These are detailed in greater depth in the Design Guide. For information, they are also detailed on the following pages and should be read as follows: ~ Define whether the street falls in a Conservation or other area Refer to Map 1 - Conservation Areas ~ Determine the street type Refer to Map 2 - Street Types ~ Consider any Character related issues Refer to Map 3 Character Areas and the Design Guide for specific matters. The Maps detailing the conservation areas, street types and character areas follow.

Corrals with lockable gates should be used to prevent theft Textured metal antiflyposter material should be used as infill to ends of the Corrals
Whilst recycling centres should be easily identifiable, they should be positioned with regard to the wider street environment Developers should consider the use of recycling centres within residential developments to: improve their effectiveness; reduce the number of street based centres; reduce the amount of damaged and graffitied units Should be located on footways over 4m wide Black PVC bins are used with an emphasis on the use of graphics and minimising text. Colour symbols for use guidance Anti-flyposter textured metal surface

Pay and display machines should be black in colour with wide podium bases for the visually impared
19
telephone boxes
Telephone boxes should generally be located to the back of the footpath and not in close proximity to telephone boxes of different design. A proportion of telephone boxes should be accessible to people with disabilities.
CONSERVATION AREAS
OTHER AREAS - can use own boxes but must be in black instead of grey finish
RECOMMENDATION I A variety of different telephone kiosks detract from the streetscene. Their colour and location should be coordinated with reference to layout of the street, in order to avoid visual clutter.

I I
No advertising on street name plates Street name plates should be consistent throughout the Borough. The post code should be red in colour, with the lettering to be of similar font and proportions Avoid over use of street plates to reduce street clutter Fix name plates to walls where they are more visually accessible Historic name plates to be refurbished and reproduced to avoid use of several nameplate styles

25
Design Guidelines
I
Bus stop shelters should be positioned so that the advertising panels are parallel to the road (other than on very wide streets) so as not to block field of vision along the street The City Heritage Cantilever bus shelter reduces the amount of available advertisement space, thereby minimising visual clutter in a conservation area or within the setting of a listed building.
26
27
traffic signs
Sign poles, sign backs and lamp fittings should all be painted black
I I
Sign lights should also be black and care taken to mount them horizontally
Signs should be mounted at the top of poles without post tops showing
Where the sign is required to be illuminated external light units (rather than internal illumination) are to be used.

Maintenance
Fly posting on street furniture detracts from the streetscene antifly devices should be considered where possible
29
tree details
Trees are a welcome addition to the Tower Hamlets streetscape. They should be used with care though, mainly in squares and on wider streets to the east of the Borough.
Arbour Square
Large corner setts to the tree pit and a simple robust pattern. Other tree pit designs for special areas eg. pedestrianised areas, should use granite setts similarly.
Section
1500 for new heavy standard trees
1m x 1m x 1m topsoil
Plan
Same surface detail for existing mature trees - min 2.5m x 2.5m
Raised planters are not appropriate for use in the public highway. They are not a traditional streetscape solution and because they are subject to drying out they often cannot fulfill their purpose.
30
historic features
Historic features help to reinforce the local character and distinctiveness to the townscape. They are symbolic of an era past and where possible should be retained and restored.
31
Vehicle control barriers should respect the historical context of the townscape. They should be used as part of wider traffic management solutions.
Care to be taken to ensure their placement does not hinder accessibility for those with disabilities.
cctv
Installation of additional CCTV cameras, should be carried out as part of a wider strategy. A co-ordinated framework of CCTV monitoring is currently under review. Any new proposals for CCTV, should be carried out in close liaison with London Borough of Tower Hamlets Street Services. Design Guidelines
I
Obtain wayleaves to use building parapets for camera mounting where possible Cameras mounted high on buildings are preferable to low positions
