COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Navin Kumar

Two Degree of Freedom: Free Vibration

Aim:
To investigate the response of a 2-Degree of freedom system with different mass, spring stiffness, and damping.

Apparatus Required:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Spring-mass system Damper rod with oil and water used to change the damping coefficient. Accelerometer VFT DAQ device Power box

Theory:
Two degree of freedom means that two is the minimum number of coordinates necessary to uniquely specify the position of the system. The purpose of this laboratory is to introduce some of the properties of linear vibrating systems with two or more degrees-of-freedom. We have already seen a one degree-of-freedom vibrating system (the mass-spring-dashpot system) and should have some familiarity with the ideas of natural frequency and resonance. These ideas still apply to an un-damped linear system with two or more degrees-of freedom. The new idea for many degrees-of-freedom systems is the concept of modes (also called Normal modes). Each mode shape has its own natural frequency and will resonate if forced at that frequency. The number of modes a system has is equal to the number of degrees-of-freedom. Thus the system above has two modes and two natural frequencies. The primary goal of this laboratory is to learn the concept of normal modes in a two degrees-of-freedom system the simplest system which exhibits such modes. We will learn this by experimentation and calculation.

Procedure:
The data acquisition will calculate the system natural and damped frequencies based on sensor data. 1. Empty the fluid damper tube. 2. Setup the two degree of freedom spring-mass-damper. 3. Connect the motor to the VFT DAQ device. 4. Connect the sensor cable to the power box, and use BNC to BNC cable to connect the power box to the Channel 1 and 2 of the VFT DAQ device.

Observations:
1. Free vibration:

2. Water:

3. Oil (SAE10W40):

Conclusion:
There are various natural frequencies of a 2-Degree of Freedom system. These systems are mainly characterized by mode shapes which are given by these natural frequencies. The pattern obtained in the graph is basically the superposition of two different frequencies which are its natural frequencies.

Sources of Error:
1. Springs could be deformed initially. 2. Due to human error lateral movement of system could be possible. 3. If bob is not fully dipped in the damping medium then it could be a case of two different damping medium at the same time. Therefore the bob must be fully dipped in the medium.
