Provocative Titles for Intellectual Pursuits

Spring 2012
Welcome to a new year and the first River North Editions catalog of 2012. We are
very excited about the collection of new titles in this quarter's catalog. We are
featuring some wonderful frontlist titles from publishers who are new to the IPG
family as well as a number of special anniversary editions from some of our
established publishing partners.

In our mission to offer fresh, original thinking and diverse opinions, River North
Editions is pleased to welcome KWS Publishers. Founded in 2009 and based in
Chicago, KWS is a publisher of scholarly, reference, and new fiction works. Their
titles are used both as reference tools for students and academic reference works
for libraries. In addition to other genres, KWS revises important books originally
published by museums, university presses, and trade and academic publishers.

We are also pleased to welcome Tightrope Books to our list of client publishers.
Tightrope is a literary publisher based in Toronto and founded in 2005. They publish
new fiction, anthologies, and poetry that highlight both novice and established
Canadian writers as well as a variety of genres and cultures. Their books perfectly
represent the strength of the current literary market flourishing in Canada.

We hope the new titles found in these catalog pages will pique your curiosity and
satisfy the interests of the independent thinker.

Enjoy,

Warriors of the Rainbow

A Chronicle of the Greenpeace Movement
from 1971 to 1979
40th anniversary edition
Robert Hunter
Foreword by Kumi Naidoo
• Previous edition sold more than 10,000 copies
• Author’s previous books sold more than 100,000 copies

A gripping personal account, this book is written by a man who

participated in some of the most publicized international environ-
mental actions ever undertaken. Robert Hunter was a much loved
member of Greenpeace from its inception, when he and 10 others
sailed aboard a rusting ship on a voyage to protect Canada’s
waters from nuclear testing. The brains behind iconic actions—
such as dying Harp Seal pups in Alaska with red paint to make
their skins commercially worthless—Hunter remained one of the
movement’s most fondly remembered activists until his death in
2005, despite his open and candid accounts of internal politics
and interpersonal strife. This updated edition features a new fore-
word by the Greenpeace executive director, as well as additional
photographs and an author’s note.
Robert Hunter was a journalist, storyteller, activist, and public
relations guru for the international environmental movement. He
was the ecology specialist at Citytv in Toronto and the host of a
popular morning segment on Breakfast Television. He is the author
of several books—including The Greenpeace Chronicle, The
Greenpeace to Amchitka: An Environmental Odyssey, and
Thermageddon: Countdown to 2030—and the founder of the
Whole Earth Church. Kumi Naidoo is the executive director of
Greenpeace.

Financing Failure
A Century of Bailouts
Vern McKinley
• Advertising in the Independent Review, Financial Times (January),
Forbes.com (February), Journal of Political Economy (February),
the National Interest (February), the Review of Economics and
Statistics (February), WallStreetJournal.com (February), and the
Economist (March)

Probably no issue during the most recent financial crisis aroused

more passion than financial institution bailouts. Focusing on the
policymaking behind the decisions to bail out these institutions—
not just during the most recent crisis, but also throughout history—
this account argues that the genesis of financial crisis lies in
government policy, whether in the mismanagement of monetary
policy during the 1930s or in the extraordinary push of consumers
into homeownership leading up to the current crisis. This detailed
analysis is an essential read in order to understand why the United
States has become so reliant on such interventions.
Vern McKinley has more than 25 years of experience as a consult-
ant, an attorney, a financial analyst, and a policy analyst. He has
been a legal advisor and regulatory policy expert for central banks
and financial agencies, including the Asian Development Bank, the
International Monetary Fund, the U.S. Treasury, and the World
Bank. He has also contributed a chapter to Central Bank
Modernization and has contributed articles to various national and
international publications, such as Regulation magazine, USA Today
magazine, and the Washington Times. He lives in Ashburn, Virginia.

“Financing Failure shows us the appalling lack of logic in regulators’ responses to financial crises and how, sadly, we can
expect more of the same in the next crisis. McKinley has produced an excellent history of the flawed analysis of financial crisis
policy of the last century.” —Jean Helwege, professor of business administration, University of South Carolina
“Reading Vern McKinley’s Financing Failure will lead you to a logical conclusion: Failure should be allowed to happen just as
success should be allowed to happen. Mr. McKinley demonstrates not only that we have gone to great extremes to keep fail-
ure from happening, but also to protect the turf of the regulators who have intervened to keep it from happening. We have
done this by putting at risk great sums of public funds and by creating fear in the public mind on the consequences of finan-
cial failure. To get a balanced view of the experience we are still going through, this book is a must read.”
—William Wallace, adjunct professor of economics, University of North Texas
“This is a phenomenal, detailed policy review of American bank bailouts from the 20th century onward, with a specific focus
on the most recent crisis and its aftermath. . . . Going forward, I suspect I will be returning to this book often. Well done.”
—Matt Stoller, former senior policy advisor for Congressman Alan Grayson

No War for Oil

U.S. Dependency and the Middle East
Ivan Eland

• Advertising in Antiwar.com, Georgetown Journal of International

Affairs, the Independent Review, International Journal on World
Peace, LewRockwell.com, Oil & Gas Financial Journal, Political
Research Quarterly, World Affairs: The Journal of International
Issues, World Policy Journal, and WallStreetJournal.com
• Author’s previous books sold more than 10,000 copies
• Author tour to include Dallas, Houston, New York,
and San Francisco

Debunking numerous myths that have emerged about the

world’s resources of oil, this book argues that the use of U.S.
military power to secure oil is not only needless and costly—in
lives and money—but also counterproductive to U.S. security.
Intended to make governments, the media, and citizens think
more rationally about oil and the use of military power to
secure it, this account suggests that the free market is still the
best vehicle to deliver the product most efficiently from produc-
er to consumer and that a withdrawal of U.S. forces from the
Persian Gulf would be beneficial in the context of potential ter-
rorist threats. Thorough and invaluable, this focused analysis
chronicles the history of the battle over oil.
Ivan Eland is a senior fellow and director of the Center on Peace
and Liberty at the Independent Institute, a former director of
defense policy studies at the Cato Institute, and a former princi-
pal defense analyst with the Congressional Budget Office. He is
the author of The Empire Has No Clothes, Partitioning for
Peace, and Recarving Rushmore. His work has been featured in
numerous publications, including the Chicago Tribune,
Northwestern Journal of International Affairs, and the
Washington Post, and on television programs such as ABC’s
World New Tonight, CNN’s Crossfire, and Fox News. He lives
in Washington, DC.

“A tour de force of history, myth-busting, and sturdy policy analysis. It is at once an excellent overview of the development
and quirks of the world oil market, a slaying of eleven monstrous but widely believed falsehoods, and a description of how
and why our wars for ‘energy independence’ have had quite the opposite effect . . . . This book could not be more valuable or
more timely.” —Michael C. Munger, professor of political science, public policy, and economics, Duke University
“Here at long last is a book that explodes all of the myths underlying the use of military force to protect the global flow of oil.
[No War for Oil] not only provides an invaluable account of the misguided policies that have led to ever-increasing U.S. mili-
tary involvement in the Middle East, but also shows how the demilitarization of U.S. energy policy would better serve the
nation's long-term interests.” —Michael T. Klare, professor of peace and world security studies, Hampshire College
“Eland beautifully weaves history and economics to tell a compelling and, more important, true story. He has hit a home run.”
—David R. Henderson, associate professor of economics, Naval Postgraduate School

Permanent Revolution
Mike Brown and the Australian
Avant-Garde 1953–1997
Richard Haese
As the only Australian artist to have been successfully
prosecuted for obscenity, Mike Brown is considered one
of the nation’s most controversial figures. This captivat-
ing book offers a comprehensive account of this outspo-
ken artist’s life and work. Brown’s imitation realism was
the first Australian art movement to incorporate collage,
assemblage, and installation, as well as the first to
respond in a profound way to Aboriginal art and to the
tribal art of New Guinea and the Pacific region. This
biography also serves as a portrait of the social and
political upheaval that gripped Australia during the
1960s and 1970s.
Richard Haese is an art historian and honorary research

San Rock Art

J. D. Lewis-Williams
• Part of the Pocket History Guides series

Rock paintings by the San Bushmen are scattered over all of southern
Africa; it is estimated that some 15,000 rock art sites are known and
possibly as many await discovery. While providing information about
the history of these fascinating paintings—considered one of the greatest
cultural treasures of humankind—this account also offers insight into
their possible interpretations by taking the magnificent Linton panel in
the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town as a starting point.
Filled with beautiful illustrations, this record sheds light on San rock art
in general and makes sense of the baffling complexity and strangeness of
the art form.
