Provocative Titles for Intellectual Pursuits
Spring 2012
Welcome to a new year and the first River North Editions catalog of 2012. We are
very excited about the collection of new titles in this quarter's catalog. We are
featuring some wonderful frontlist titles from publishers who are new to the IPG
family as well as a number of special anniversary editions from some of our
established publishing partners.
In our mission to offer fresh, original thinking and diverse opinions, River North
Editions is pleased to welcome KWS Publishers. Founded in 2009 and based in
Chicago, KWS is a publisher of scholarly, reference, and new fiction works. Their
titles are used both as reference tools for students and academic reference works
for libraries. In addition to other genres, KWS revises important books originally
published by museums, university presses, and trade and academic publishers.
We are also pleased to welcome Tightrope Books to our list of client publishers.
Tightrope is a literary publisher based in Toronto and founded in 2005. They publish
new fiction, anthologies, and poetry that highlight both novice and established
Canadian writers as well as a variety of genres and cultures. Their books perfectly
represent the strength of the current literary market flourishing in Canada.
We hope the new titles found in these catalog pages will pique your curiosity and
satisfy the interests of the independent thinker.
Enjoy,
Paul Murphy

Financing Failure
A Century of Bailouts
Vern McKinley
• Advertising in the Independent Review, Financial Times (January),
Forbes.com (February), Journal of Political Economy (February),
the National Interest (February), the Review of Economics and
Statistics (February), WallStreetJournal.com (February), and the
Economist (March)
“Financing Failure shows us the appalling lack of logic in regulators’ responses to financial crises and how, sadly, we can
expect more of the same in the next crisis. McKinley has produced an excellent history of the flawed analysis of financial crisis
policy of the last century.” —Jean Helwege, professor of business administration, University of South Carolina
“Reading Vern McKinley’s Financing Failure will lead you to a logical conclusion: Failure should be allowed to happen just as
success should be allowed to happen. Mr. McKinley demonstrates not only that we have gone to great extremes to keep fail-
ure from happening, but also to protect the turf of the regulators who have intervened to keep it from happening. We have
done this by putting at risk great sums of public funds and by creating fear in the public mind on the consequences of finan-
cial failure. To get a balanced view of the experience we are still going through, this book is a must read.”
—William Wallace, adjunct professor of economics, University of North Texas
“This is a phenomenal, detailed policy review of American bank bailouts from the 20th century onward, with a specific focus
on the most recent crisis and its aftermath. . . . Going forward, I suspect I will be returning to this book often. Well done.”
—Matt Stoller, former senior policy advisor for Congressman Alan Grayson

“A tour de force of history, myth-busting, and sturdy policy analysis. It is at once an excellent overview of the development
and quirks of the world oil market, a slaying of eleven monstrous but widely believed falsehoods, and a description of how
and why our wars for ‘energy independence’ have had quite the opposite effect . . . . This book could not be more valuable or
more timely.” —Michael C. Munger, professor of political science, public policy, and economics, Duke University
“Here at long last is a book that explodes all of the myths underlying the use of military force to protect the global flow of oil.
[No War for Oil] not only provides an invaluable account of the misguided policies that have led to ever-increasing U.S. mili-
tary involvement in the Middle East, but also shows how the demilitarization of U.S. energy policy would better serve the
nation's long-term interests.” —Michael T. Klare, professor of peace and world security studies, Hampshire College
“Eland beautifully weaves history and economics to tell a compelling and, more important, true story. He has hit a home run.”
—David R. Henderson, associate professor of economics, Naval Postgraduate School

Evan Walters
Moments of Vision
Edited by Barry Plummer
Foreword by Charlotte Church
Featuring a generous selection of color
reproductions, this book introduces the
paintings of Evan Walters, a brilliant yet
largely unknown 20th-century Welsh
painter. Beyond showcasing examples of
Walters’ portraits, landscapes, and still
lifes, it also includes a short biogra-
phy as well as responses to his
work from other leading artists and
writers, such as John Barnie, Tim
Davies, Bryon Deynon, Peter Finch, Jon
Gower, Shani Rhys James, Mary Lloyd
Jones, and Rowan Williams, the
Archbishop of Canterbury. A dialogue
between text and image, this book
offers a portrait of the artist as well as a
fascinating commentary on creativity
and inspiration.
Barry Plummer is a former journalist
from South Wales who became an art
historian. He is a lecturer in art history
at Swansea Metropolitan University.

Permanent Revolution
Mike Brown and the Australian
Avant-Garde 1953–1997
Richard Haese
As the only Australian artist to have been successfully
prosecuted for obscenity, Mike Brown is considered one
of the nation’s most controversial figures. This captivat-
ing book offers a comprehensive account of this outspo-
ken artist’s life and work. Brown’s imitation realism was
the first Australian art movement to incorporate collage,
assemblage, and installation, as well as the first to
respond in a profound way to Aboriginal art and to the
tribal art of New Guinea and the Pacific region. This
biography also serves as a portrait of the social and
political upheaval that gripped Australia during the
1960s and 1970s.
Richard Haese is an art historian and honorary research
associate in the School of Historical and European
Studies at La Trobe University. He is the author of Rebels
and Precursors: The Revolutionary Years of Australian
Art, which won a New South Wales Premier’s Award
for nonfiction.

Rock paintings by the San Bushmen are scattered over all of southern
Africa; it is estimated that some 15,000 rock art sites are known and
possibly as many await discovery. While providing information about
the history of these fascinating paintings—considered one of the greatest
cultural treasures of humankind—this account also offers insight into
their possible interpretations by taking the magnificent Linton panel in
the Iziko South African Museum in Cape Town as a starting point.
Filled with beautiful illustrations, this record sheds light on San rock art
in general and makes sense of the baffling complexity and strangeness of
the art form.
J. D. Lewis-Williams is a professor emeritus and former director of the
Rock Art Research Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand. He
