POSSIBLE CAREERS AND SENIOR THESIS IDEAS Abstract

In the following paper, I will analyze and explore in depth each of the three careers that I have an interest in. Each of the careers will have its own section. In each section, I will provide a brief job description, list the necessary skill to perform each job, identify the education requirements needed to obtain a job, identify both the public and private setting of the career, identify possible salaries, identify part-time jobs that would prepare you for a job in the career, identify schools that will prepare me for the career, and tell what it takes to be accepted into the schools. In each section, I will also list a senior thesis that would help me gain acceptance into a college that offers degree for each career. Keywords: careers, senior thesis

POSSIBLE CAREERS AND SENIOR THESIS IDEAS Possible Careers and Senior Thesis Ideas APA Format One of the more important aspects of the Academic Leadership Academy is the senior thesis. The thesis is the students chance to showcase all they have learned in ALA t o colleges, and because of this the thesis is very important. The senior thesis is heavily based on the students

interests, and possible career pursuits. This is the reason why we have selected three careers that we have an interest in, and have analyzed the careers. The three careers that I have an interest in are computer engineer, nuclear engineer, and pharmacist. Computer Engineer Computer engineers are engineers that research, design, develop and test computer equipment. These engineers create rapid advancements in computer technology (bls, 2012). Computer engineers need to be skilled in both math and science, and must be able to operate computers and electronics. Most entry level computer engineering jobs require a bachelors degree in computer engineering, but large firms often require a masters degree. A computer engineer would work in the public setting by working for the government, and they would work in the private setting for private computer firms (bls, 2012). The typical entry level salary is about 60,000 dollars, and the maximum salary is about 150,000 dollars (bls, 2012). A job that you could do in college that would prepare you for this job would be repairing computers, because this job would help you to become familiar with computers. A college that offers courses in computer engineering is the University of South Carolina. The requirements for entry in to USC are 4 units of English and math, 3 units of social studies and laboratory science, 2 units of foreign language, and 1 unit of a fine art, academic elective, and physical education (USC, 2012). A topic that I could write my senior thesis about could be the impact of computer usage on behavior.

Pharmacist Pharmacists dispense medication and offers advice about medicine to patients. Pharmacists would need to be skilled in biology and chemical sciences, and would also have to know about the medicine that they are dispensing. Pharmacists must obtain a degree in pharmacy, and after graduation they must pass tests to become licensed. Pharmacists could work in the private setting in hospitals, and in the public setting as a clinical pharmacist at a drugstore. The minimum salary for a pharmacist is 84,000 dollars and the maximum is 144,000 dollars (bls, 2012). A pharmacist could work as a pharmacist technician during college, because this would help the person get real world experience in a pharmacy. If I wanted to earn a degree in pharmacy, I could go to Auburn School of Pharmacy. The requirements of Auburn School of Pharmacy are 4 units of English, 3 years of social studies and math, and 2 years of a science. A topic that I could write my senior thesis about would be making a more user friendly pill bottle. Nuclear Engineer Nuclear engineers research and develop ways to benefit from nuclear energy and radiation. Many find medical and industrial uses for radioactive materials (bls, 2012). Nuclear engineers would need to be skilled in math and science, more specifically nuclear chemistry. Nuclear engineers must have at minimum a bachelors degree in nuclear engineering. Nuclear engineers could work in the private setting at a power plant, and could work in the public setting as a radiology technician at a hospital. The minimum salary for a nuclear engineer is 60,000 dollars and the maximum is 120,000 dollars. A school that offers courses in nuclear engineering is the University of South Carolina. math, 3 units of social studies and laboratory science, 2 units of foreign language, and 1 unit of a fine art, academic elective, and physical education (USC, 2012). A topic that I could write my senior thesis about would be creating a more effective smoke detector that does not require americium, an element that emits radiation, to work. Conclusion The senior thesis is one of the most important aspects of ALA, allowing you to show your best work to your peers and to colleges. Because of this, it is important for you to make your thesis about a topic that you are interested in. In this essay, I analyzed three careers that I was interested in, and in the process, I have gotten ideas about my senior thesis.
