In many cases, from economical point of view, it makes more sense to upgrade existing switchgear than to carry out the necessary regular maintenance or replace old switching gear with new equipment. This is why our retrot solutions enable you to upgrade your system retrospectively by integrating customized, new, modern components, such as maintenance-free vacuum circuit breakers VD4 and VM1 on the primary side
and of course using of the latest protection and control technology on the secondary side. This ensures the maximum availability and optimum performance of the switchgear and also extends its life time.

Retrofit solutions for medium-voltage switchgear rated between 6 and 50 kV Ultra fast earthing switch UFES
1 2
The innovative combination of the vacuum interrupter and IS limiter ABB products that have proved their worth over decades enabled the development of a new arc fault protection system with the ultra fast grounding switch UFES. The principle of the system comprises three-phase grounding immediately after an internal arc fault occurs. The extremely short operating time of thespecial vacuum device, in conjunction with rapid andreliable detection of fault current and light, ensures immediate extinguishing of an internal arc (within 4 ms) after detection.
This effectively prevents thermal and mechanical damage inside the switchgear to be protected. The system offers benefits for all air-insulated medium-voltage switching system, independent oftheirtest classification. The time-proven ABB light monitoring system TVOC-2 is used for optical detection of the arc fault. Itcan monitor up to 50 additional fields.

In 1993, ABB introduced the combined bay control and protection unit SCU (later REF 542), which combines the functions of a protective relay and a bay control unit. Since the device was introduced, it has been implemented in numerous power distribution systems worldwide.
The extended requirements concerning connections to the station level resulted in a re-worked and improved version ofthe previous SCU / REF 542. With significantly increased functionality and modern design, the multifunctional bay control and protection unit REF 542 plus is fully compatible with the previous SCU / REF 542 in terms of functionality.

Chapter 3 Service for high-voltage products and installations > 50 to 420 kV Gas-insulated switchgear
ABBs gas-insulated switchgear have become an essential feature of electric power distribution. Gas-insulated switchgear have been produced and successfully installed since the mid 1960s. They are an integral part of electric power distribution for millions ofpeople across the globe, as well asfor the industry. As a result of ongoing developments to the switchgear, it can not only control current ows at rated conditions, but also incidents with up to 63 kA. In order to ensure that this vast level of output iscontrolled, even for circuit breakers that have been in use for more than 35 years, low-maintenance gas-insulated switching systems also need to be kept in good condition. This work is carried out by theABB Service Power Technologies.

The EBK-030 switchgear differs from EBK-020 basically only from its circuit breaker. In contrast to the EBK-020, this circuit breaker is a Single-pressure breaker and it operates according to the blast piston principle. Furthermore, these assets, compared to the switchgears of the rst generation of the EBK-010 series, have an unchanged bay section. The switchgears were produced from 1977 to 1981.
As well as having the same compartment module layout, EBK-020 and EBK-030 also have identical isolators and fast acting grounding switches. This means that the isolators and fast acting grounding switches of both series can be maintained in the same manner.

In contrary to the EBK-0 series, EBK-01 gas-insulated switchgear has a three-phase system module. In order to encapsulate the asset, aluminum casting was used. Due to a signicantly reduced weight compared to a steel capsule no complex/ extensive grounding/base is needed.
One bay of an asset with a double bus bar weighs up to 3.500 kg. The switchgear was produced from 1987 to the mid 1980s.

ELK-02 switchgears were produced between 1981 and 1986. In contrary to the EBK series, the ELK series has a complete three-phase encapsulated bay section.
Until 1985, the switchgears were driven by a hydraulic operating mechanism. From 1985 onwards, the circuit breakers were equipped with compact hydraulic operating mechanisms.

The switchgear of the ELK-03 series has a bay section which was changed compared to that of their direct predecessors the ELK-02 in such a way that the separate isolators and grounding switches were integrated into the bus bar by a combined isolator and grounding switch unit. These series were produced between 1987 and 1993 and were the rst series of switchgear having a hydro-mechanic operating mechanism.
The motor drive energy savings of more than 80% enables the usage of the smaller AHMA1 motor drive. From 1991 onwards, the rst generation of auto-puffer chambers for circuit breakers was integrated into the asset series and were admitted for a rated voltage up to 170 kV.

The switchgear of the ELK-04 series have been in production since 1992. They have a signicantly more compact threephase bay section and use HMB1 second-generation spring operating mechanisms.
The great success of this series resulted in several updates so that, upon request, it can deal with and manage faults of up to 63,000 A and rated currents of up to 4,000 A.

Retrofitting is retroactive upgrading of older equipment in energy transmission and distribution systems with the latest state-of-the art components. Furthermore, the focus is on environmental protection requirements, systemoptimization systems engineering and increasing personal safety.
This is why our engineers have developed retrot solutions. These solutions enable the use of modern SF 6-auto puffer switches with hydraulic spring operating mechanisms to replace oldertechnology in existing gasinsulated switchgear.
1 2
The EBK retrot solutions are adapted to meet the customers technical and economic requirements, without shutting down the entire substation. Existing switchgear with obsolete circuit breaker quenching principles,
high-maintenance circuit breaker operating mechanism and older graphite bursting disks can be upgraded with relatively little effort.

EBK-010 switchgear were produced between 1972 and 1974. The dual-pressure circuit breakers are first generation and can be exchanged without any problems through anadaptive retrofit solution, requiring no major modifications.
The new EBK-SW21 retrofit circuit breaker is operated by a latest-generation hydro-mechanical HMB operating mechanism.

ELK-03 switchgear were produced between 1987 and 1993 and were the rst series of switchgear to feature a hydraulic spring operating mechanism of the AHMA series. From 1991 onwards, the auto-puffer chambers were installed, and these are still used today. The associated savings in operating power of over 8 %make it possible to use the smaller AHMA1 operating mechanism.
The ELK-SW03 retrofit solution now gives you the option of upgrading the existing circuit breaker from 31.5 to 40 kA. Special modifications enable you to use a latest-generation HMB hydro-mechanical operating mechanism.
