Tell students that it is not Julio Cesar Chavez (Picture) that we are talking about, but rather a civil rights leader (Picture). For this activity I need you to use your imaginations. Imagine that time is fastforwarded thirty years, and you are now married with two kids. You just lost your job and there is no food or money in the house and rent is due. You feel terrible and worried about your children starving. Just at that moment the phone rings and you are offered a job, without second guessing you take the job. The next day you go in to work and they give you a run-down of your job duties and tasks. Talk to you table about how you feel about your job, and if there is something you dont like, how would you go about changing it. Congratulations! You work for United Farmers. To access it: Click on class page Social Studies link Scroll down to the botton and click on DBQ 13 Then Flip all the way to the last page and be at position 1 level 0 once youve got it. Go! Tracking the passage at the top of the page, lets read about this hero. Read the story of Cesar Chavez to students (5 minutes). Going back over key points from passage A 25 day hunger strike? You all know what a strike is, what do you think a hunger strike would be? Take some responses and open up a hand raising discussion. A strike is when a business's employees refuse to work, usually over a contractual dispute. Imagine believing in something so much that you are willing to put yourself in danger to make it happen. Cesar Chavez was determined to fight for rights and better wages for farmer union workers. As a worker, talk to your table about some rights that you would want to have in your work place? What would you want to be able to do? Give talk time (1 minute), then take responses and open hand raising discussion. If you worked with Cesar Chavez back then, you didnt have any of those rights. Imagine how youd feel if someone was willing to risk their life so that you would have them. Tell students to use one word to describe how they would feel toward Cesar, if they were the workers he fought for: [Cold Call]. 5 Minutes.

I didnt like the long hours or the pay. How would you change them? I would quit. You cant quit, you need the job or your family will starve. Talk to my boss. What would you say? Go on strike. Just you? What would that solve? They could just hire someone else. Narrate those doing this at level 0.
